This paper presents sufficient conditions for the stability and $\ell_{2}$-gain performance of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with ReLU activation functions. These conditions are derived by combining Lyapunov/dissipativity theory with Quadratic Constraints (QCs) satisfied by repeated ReLUs. We write a general class of QCs for repeated ReLUs using known properties for the scalar ReLU. Our stability and performance condition uses these QCs along with a “lifted” representation for the ReLU RNN. We show that the positive homogeneity property satisfied by a scalar ReLU does not expand the class of QCs for the repeated ReLU. We present examples to demonstrate the stability / performance condition and study the effect of the lifting horizon.

Unlike most human-engineered systems, biological systems are emergent from low-level interactions, allowing much broader diversity and superior adaptation to complex environments. Inspired by the process of morphogenesis in nature, a bottom-up design approach for robot morphology is proposed to treat a robot's body as an emergent response to underlying processes rather than a predefined shape. This paper presents Loopy, a “Swarm-of-One” polymorphic robot testbed that can be viewed simultaneously as a robotic swarm and a single robot. Loopy's shape is determined jointly by self-organization and morphological computing using physically linked homogeneous cells. Experimental results show that Loopy can form symmetric shapes consisting of lobes. Using the same set of parameters, even small amounts of initial noise can change the number of lobes formed. However, once in a stable configuration, Loopy has an “inertia” to transfiguring in response to dynamic parameters. By making the connections among self-organization, morphological computing, and robot design, this work lays the foundation for more adaptable robot designs in the future.

We introduce a multi-layer networked compartmental ${SIRS} - V_{o}$ model that captures opinion dynamics, disease spread, risk perception, and self-interest vaccine-uptake behavior in an epidemic process. We characterize the target vaccination criterion of the proposed model and conditions that guarantee the criterion is obtainable by influencing opinions on disease prevalence. We leverage this result to design an eradication strategy that leverages opinions and vaccination. Through numerical simulations, we show that the proposed eradication strategy is able to stabilize the epidemic process around a healthy state equilibrium, and the outbreak rebounds after the control signal is relaxed
