LiDAR technology for Human Activity Recognition: Outlooks and Challenges

The smart and autonomous learning and recognition of human activities will certainly lead to an incredible progression for several applications and services in public healthcare, education, entertainment, safety and security, and more. With the recent advances in artificial intelligence, signal processing, and computational capabilities, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology can play an instrumental role to revamp current human activity recognition (HAR) systems. In this magazine, we investigate the potential of using LiDAR sensors as a novel technology enabling complex and real-time HAR applications. We first overview the HAR categories and the existing state-of-the-art technologies: video-based cameras, depth sensors, wearable devices, and WiFi. Afterward, we delve into the integration of LiDAR technology to perform HAR applications. Then, we discuss the advantages and drawbacks of utilizing LiDAR technology for HAR and compare it with the existing techniques. Finally, we discuss the challenges that need to be addressed to enable advanced LiDAR-based HAR applications. © 2018 IEEE.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multi-output (MIMO) is now a reality with great potential for further improvement. We study full-duplex transmissions as an effective way to improve mmWave MIMO systems. Compared to half-duplex systems, full-duplex transmissions may offer higher data rates and lower latency. However, full-duplex transmission is hindered by self-interference (SI) at the receive antennas, and SI channel estimation becomes a crucial step to make the full-duplex systems feasible. In this paper, we address the problem of channel estimation in full-duplex mmWave MIMO systems using neural networks (NNs). Our approach involves sharing pilot resources between user equipments (UEs) and transmit antennas at the base station (BS), aiming to reduce the pilot overhead in full-duplex systems and to achieve a comparable level to that of a half-duplex system. Additionally, in the case of separate antenna configurations in a full-duplex BS, providing channel estimates of transmit antenna (TX) arrays to the downlink UEs poses another challenge, as the TX arrays are not capable of receiving pilot signals. To address this, we employ an NN to map the channel from the downlink UEs to the receive antenna (RX) arrays to the channel from the TX arrays to the downlink UEs. We further elaborate on how NNs perform the estimation with different architectures, (e.g., different numbers of hidden layers), the introduction of non-linear distortion (e.g., with a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC)), and different channel conditions (e.g., low-correlated and high-correlated channels). Detection and segmentation of defocus blur is a challenging task in digital imaging applications as the blurry images comprise of blur and sharp regions that wrap significant information and require effective methods for information *** defocus blur detection and segmentation methods have several limitations i.e.,discriminating sharp smooth and blurred smooth regions,low recognition rate in noisy images,and high computational cost without having any prior knowledge of images i.e.,blur degree and camera ***,there exists a dire need to develop an effective method for defocus blur detection,and segmentation robust to the above-mentioned *** paper presents a novel features descriptor local directional mean patterns(LDMP)for defocus blur detection and employ KNN matting over the detected LDMP-Trimap for the robust segmentation of sharp and blur *** argue/hypothesize that most of the image fields located in blurry regions have significantly less specific local patterns than those in the sharp regions,therefore,proposed LDMP features descriptor should reliably detect the defocus blurred *** fusion of LDMP features with KNN matting provides superior performance in terms of obtaining high-quality segmented regions in the ***,the proposed LDMP features descriptor is robust to noise and successfully detects defocus blur in high-dense noisy *** results on Shi and Zhao datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of defocus blur *** and comparative analysis signify that our method achieves superior segmentation performance and low computational cost of 15 seconds.

Failure detection is an essential task in industrial systems for preventing costly downtime and ensuring the seamlessoperation of the system. Current industrial processes are getting smarter with the emergence of Industry ***, various modernized industrial processes have been equipped with quite a few sensors to collectprocess-based data to find faults arising or prevailing in processes along with monitoring the status of *** diagnosis of rotating machines serves a main role in the engineering field and industrial production. Dueto the disadvantages of existing fault, diagnosis approaches, which greatly depend on professional experienceand human knowledge, intellectual fault diagnosis based on deep learning (DL) has attracted the researcher’sinterest. DL reaches the desired fault classification and automatic feature learning. Therefore, this article designs a Gradient Optimizer Algorithm with Hybrid Deep Learning-based Failure Detection and Classification (GOAHDLFDC)in the industrial environment. The presented GOAHDL-FDC technique initially applies continuous wavelettransform (CWT) for preprocessing the actual vibrational signals of the rotating machinery. Next, the residualnetwork (ResNet18) model was exploited for the extraction of features from the vibration signals which are thenfed into theHDLmodel for automated fault detection. Finally, theGOA-based hyperparameter tuning is performedtoadjust the parameter valuesof theHDLmodel *** experimental result analysis of the GOAHDL-FD Calgorithm takes place using a series of simulations and the experimentation outcomes highlight the better resultsof the GOAHDL-FDC technique under different aspects.

Blockchain-Based Lightweight Certificateless Authenticated Key Agreement Protocol for V2V Communications in IoV

With the emergence of the Internet of Things, traditional vehicular ad hoc networks have evolved into the more sophisticated Internet of Vehicles (IoV). IoV is expected to play a key role in the development of future smart cities and intelligent transportation systems. However, like most information technology systems, IoV is vulnerable to the cyberattack. A hacker may gain control over a vehicle, thereby posing serious danger to the vehicle occupants, surrounding vehicles and pedestrians. Consequently, improving the security of IoV is essential in ensuring its future success. Among the various security concerns surrounding IoV, secure communications and authentication are two of the most critical. Currently, most proposed works suffers the single-point-of-failure (SPOF) problem and the trusted third party (TTP) compromise issue. To address these issues, the present study proposes a secure key generation mechanism which leverages the advantages of blockchain technology and certificateless public-key cryptography. In the proposed method, the distributed architecture of blockchain is exploited to realize a decentralized TTP service to prevent the SPOF problem and the TTP compromise issue. In addition, an authenticated key agreement (AKA) protocol based on the legal key pairs is proposed to facilitate efficient mutual authentication and session key agreement between the vehicles. The security analysis results show that the proposed schemes have excellent resistance to the typical TTP issues. Moreover, the feasibility of the proposed AKA protocol is demonstrated through the extended Canetti-Krawczyk model. Finally, the performance analysis results show that the proposed scheme yields a significant reduction in the computational cost compared to the existing AKA protocols. © 2014 IEEE.

Heterogeneous networks are promising solutions for enhancing network performance of LTE-A mobile networks by deploying small cells within the area of the serving macro cells. The goal of deploying such networks is to offload data from the congested macro cells towards the small cells. However, cross tier interference is a serious issue, which is introduced due to the transmitted power difference between Macro cell node and small cell node. Hence, cell age users are mainly affected by high power interference originated from Macro node. The paper develops enhanced inter-cell interference coordination using Almost Blank Sub-Frame (ABS) to improve user throughput. This can be achieved by stopping data transmission on in certain sub frame of macro cell while Pico users are scheduled at the same frame. computer simulation results depict that the performance of Pico cell users is highly degraded, especially for cell edge users. The ABS technique improves cell edge user throughput of Pico cell by 95% and center cell user throughput by 75.25%. © 2024 IEEE.
