Drunk driving continues to be a substantial public health issue, leading to a multitude of accidents and deaths on a global scale. Conventional techniques for identifying drunk driving, such as breathalyzers and field sobriety tests, tend to be reactive rather than proactive. This paper surveys the existing methods for detecting drunk driving to enhance traffic safety. The technologies studied can proactively detect impaired driving behaviors by combining machine learning (ML) approaches with real-time data processing. The study outlines various classifications based on measured metrics and driving behavior. © 2024 IEEE.

Underwater Acoustic Source Seeking Using Time-Difference-of-Arrival Measurements

The research presented in this paper is aimed at developing a control algorithm for an autonomous surface system carrying a two-sensor array consisting of two acoustic receivers, capable of measuring the time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) of a quasiperiodic underwater acoustic signal and utilizing this value to steer the system toward the acoustic source in the horizontal plane. Stability properties of the proposed algorithm are analyzed using the Lie bracket approximation technique. Furthermore, simulation results are presented, where particular attention is given to the relationship between the time difference of arrival measurement noise and the sensor baseline-the distance between the two acoustic receivers. Also, the influence of a constant disturbance caused by sea currents is considered. Finally, experimental results in which the algorithm was deployed on two autonomous surface vehicles, each equipped with a single acoustic receiver, are presented. The algorithm successfully steers the vehicle formation toward the acoustic source, despite the measurement noise and intermittent measurements, thus showing the feasibility of the proposed algorithm in real-life conditions. © 2024, CC BY.

Nowadays, classical Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers are mainly used for operation of most hydro turbine governors. Although the PID controllers have many advantages, such as simple implementation, their main weaknesses are resiliency to the disturbances and uncertainties, as well as the integral windup. Therefore, a hydro turbine governor's speed controller based on the model predictive control (MPC) is developed and applied to a non-linear simulation model of a laboratory hydro power plant. The frequency response of the hydro power plant in the islanded mode with MPC controller is compared to the classical PID controller. The simulation results clearly indicate that the MPC provides better performance than the classical PID controller. In that regard, it can be concluded that this type of controller has a practical implementation potential. © 2022 University of Split, FESB.

The generation of high-quality medical time series data is essential for advancing healthcare diagnostics and safeguarding patient privacy. Specifically, synthesizing realistic phonocardiogram (PCG) signals offers significant potential as a cost-effective and efficient tool for cardiac disease pre-screening. Despite its potential, the synthesis of PCG signals for this specific application received limited attention in research. In this study, we employ and compare three state-of-the-art generative models from different categories - WaveNet, DoppelGANger, and DiffWave - to generate high-quality PCG data. We use data from the George B. Moody PhysioNet Challenge 2022. Our methods are evaluated using various metrics widely used in the previous literature in the domain of time series data generation, such as mean absolute error and maximum mean discrepancy. Our results demonstrate that the generated PCG data closely resembles the original datasets, indicating the effectiveness of our generative models in producing realistic synthetic PCG data. In our future work, we plan to incorporate this method into a data augmentation pipeline to synthesize abnormal PCG signals with heart murmurs, in order to address the current scarcity of abnormal data. We hope to improve the robustness and accuracy of diagnostic tools in cardiology, enhancing their effectiveness in detecting heart murmurs. © 2025 IEEE.

In order to further reduce the rate of abandonment of wind and light and improve the operation economy of the Regional Integrated Energy System (RIES), this paper proposes a bi-level optimization scheduling model of RIES with consideration of electric vehicle (EV) charging. Firstly, according to the analysis of the EV charging characteristics, the disordered charging model based on Monte Carlo and the orderly charging model based on Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity price are established. Then, considering the uncertainty of wind and photovoltaic power, as well as the flexibility of EV charging, the bi-level optimization scheduling model is adopted to reduce the carbon transaction cost and to improve the utilization rate of renewable energy. Finally, verified by the wind-solar hydrogen storage regional integrated energy system, the simulation results indicate that: the proposed bi-level optimization scheduling model has the characteristics of high wind and solar utilization, low carbon transaction costs, and good economic effects. © 2022 IEEE.

With the exponential growth of IoT devices, ensuring efficient and accurate network anomaly detection in resource-constrained environments has become a pressing challenge. A lightweight dual distillation approach is proposed, combining data distillation and model distillation. Data distillation is achieved through KMeans clustering and refinement, while model distillation leverages a random forest (RF) teacher model to guide a simplified multi-layer perceptron (MLP) student model. The approach is validated on CICIDS2017 and TON-IoT datasets, where dataset sizes are reduced to 20% and 40%, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method enhances MLP accuracy on CICIDS2017 from 93.17% to 99.66% and on TON-IoT from 89.00% to 93.14%. Moreover, the method significantly reduces model parameters compared to the RF teacher model while maintaining competitive performance, making it highly suitable for resource-constrained IoT environments.

The European directives focus on unlocking the potential of final customers in the clean energy transition. With the recent trend of rising electricity and petrol prices, coupled with reduced investment costs in low-carbon technologies, the installation of photovoltaic solar panels for end customers has become more profitable compared to previous years, leading to a shorter payback period. Additionally, to enhance citizen engagement in the integration of renewable energy sources, various forms of local energy-sharing models are discussed in the literature. This paper elaborates on the regulatory framework and policies at the European level concerning renewable energy communities, citizen energy communities, and collective self-consumption, with a particular focus on Croatia’s perspective. It highlights the steps needed to accelerate the realization of energy communities in practice. Under current Croatian regulations, the profit from selling surplus community energy to the supplier cannot be directly remunerated to community members. The results indicate that community members could achieve 20% lower electricity costs annually if the surplus energy were directly remunerated. To avoid losing potential profits from excess energy, the paper models an investment in a community-owned battery storage system, aiming to increase community self-consumption and minimize the amount of energy sold to suppliers. It is shown that with a static sharing scheme, individual community members’ costs can decrease by 11% to 16%, and by up to 20% with a dynamic scheme compared to cases where profit from excess energy cannot be directly remunerated to community members.

In this paper, we present a method to control the UAV to follow the power line with a specific position and orientation based only on the measurement of the magnetic field generated by the current flow in the power line. In this way, it is possible to localize the UAV with respect to the power line without the need for additional sensors, even in poor visibility conditions. The measurements from four magnetometers attached to the UAV are used to solve an optimization problem that involves determining the relative pose of the UAV with respect to the power line. Based on the relative pose, the UAV is controlled to follow the power line in a predefined position and orientation. Experiments in a test setup have confirmed that the method is applicable in a realistic environment.

The shift towards the renewable energy market for carbon-neutral power generation has encouraged different governments to come up with a plan of *** with the endorsement of renewable energy for harsh environmental conditions like sand dust and snow,monitoring and maintenance are a few of the prime *** problems were addressed widely in the literature,but most of the research has drawbacks due to long detection time,and high misclassification *** to overcome these drawbacks,and to develop an accurate monitoring approach,this paper is motivated toward the understanding of primary failure concerning a grid-connected photovoltaic(PV)system and highlighted along with a brief overview on existing fault detection *** on the drawback a data-driven machine learning approach has been used for the identification of fault and indicating the maintenance unit regarding the operation and maintenance ***,the system was tested with a 4 kWp grid-connected PV system,and a decision tree-based algorithm was developed for the identification of a *** results identified 94.7%training accuracy and 14000 observations/sec prediction speed for the trained classifier and improved the reliability of fault detection nature of the grid-connected PV operation.
