This paper proposes an algorithm to estimate the parameters, including time delay, of continuous time systems based on instrumental variable identification methods. To overcome the multiple local minima of the cost function associated with the estimation of a time delay system, we utilise the useful redundancy technique. Specifically, the cost function is filtered through a set of low-pass filters to improve convexity with the useful redundancy technique exploited to achieve convergence to the global minimum of the optimization problem. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the authors will introduce a two-level voltage stability evaluation method consists of control center level and substation level. At control center level, some certain sensitivities related with operation state of overall system are calculated and these variables are sent to several substations. At substation level, the proposed method adopts a different system model rather than Thevenin Equivalent Circuit, such that the results of local voltage stability assessment are more accurate than traditional distributed methods. The performance of the proposed method is tested on IEEE 39-bus system.

Hierarchical decomposition of LTL synthesis problem for nonlinear control systems

—This paper deals with the control synthesis problem for a continuous nonlinear dynamical system under a Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formula. The proposed solution is a top-down hierarchical decomposition of the control problem involving three abstraction layers of the problem, iteratively solved from the coarsest to the finest. The LTL planning is first solved on a small transition system only describing the regions of interest involved in the LTL formula. For each pair of consecutive regions of interest in the resulting accepting path satisfying the LTL formula, a discrete plan is then constructed in the partitioned workspace to connect these two regions while avoiding unsafe regions. Finally, an abstraction refinement approach is applied to synthesize a controller for the dynamical system to follow each discrete plan. The second main contribution, used in the third abstraction layer, is a new monotonicity-based method to over-approximate the finite-time reachable set of any continuously differentiable system. The proposed framework is demonstrated in simulation for a motion planning problem of a mobile robot modeled as a disturbed unicycle. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The prediction method based on the partition of weather types has been widely used in photovoltaic prediction. Here, the temporal characteristics of PV data is studied, the physical meaning of the sequential difference sequences is analysed, and a characteristic index system including sequential characteristics index is proposed. The weather types are partitioned based on self-organising map neural network algorithm. Case study shows that the partition method is helpful to improve the discrimination of weather types and to improve prediction accuracy. © 2017 Institution of engineering and Technology. This paper deals with the saturated control problem of a class of distributed systems which can be modelled by first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDE). The objective is designing a distributed-parameter state feedback with guaranteed performance for this class of systems, using the Lyapunov stability theory and polynomial sum-of-squares (SOS) programming. For this, a polynomial parameter varying (PPV) model is employed to exactly represent the nonlinear PDE system in a local region of the state space and then, based on it, a PPV state-feedback law is designed guaranteeing exponential stability and actuator saturation in such region. The approach is illustrated here through the standard example of a nonisothermal plug-flow reactor. © 2016

The paper addresses the developing method of an adaptive control structure for an anaerobic digestion process under the realistic assumption that some state variables are unmeasurable, the reaction kinetics are incompletely known and time-varying and moreover the influent pollutant concentration is completely unknown. More exactly, the process that is taken into account is a wastewater biological treatment process operated in a continuous perfectly mixed bioreactor. The control solution proposed in the paper is based on an innovative adaptive technique. The controller design is achieved by combining an exact linearizing controller with a sequence of two cascaded state observers and with a parameter estimator. The proposed adaptive control structure is able to cope with several problems such as uncertainty of inputs and of kinetics, unavailability of on-line measurements, disturbances and noisy measurements. The behaviour and efficacy of estimation and control structures are evaluated by several digital simulations.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Decentralized data-injection attack construction with minimum mean-square-error state estimation is studied in a game-theoretic setting. Within this framework, the interaction between the network operator and the set of attackers, as well as the interactions among the attackers, are modeled by a game in normal form. A novel utility function that captures the trade-off between the maximum distortion that an attack can introduce and the probability of the attack being detected by the network operator is proposed. Under the assumption that the state variables can be modeled as a multivariate Gaussian random process, it is shown that the resulting game is a potential game. The cardinality of the corresponding set of Nash Equilibria (NEs) of the game is analyzed. It is shown that attackers can agree on a data-injection vector construction that achieves the best trade-off between distortion and detection probability by sharing only a limited number of bits offline. Interestingly, this vector construction is also shown to be an NE of the resulting game. © 2016 IEEE.

The paper deals with classification of road infrastructure objects, particularly road surface and objects situated in surrounding environment such as facades of buildings and pole-like objects. The attention is paid to processing of three-dimensional models generated and reconstructed on the base of two-dimensional mobile laser scanning. There are different methods available to classify scanned objects;however, various shortcomings and limitations are usually identified in relation to their practical usage. Most classification methods applied to the three-dimensional models are based on range data processing. We present our three-stage classification algorithm that has been proposed and implemented with motivation to explore how range and reflectivity data could be used separately or in fusion to classify certain objects. The paper shows results of practical experiments based on real data recordings and proving usability of the proposed algorithm. © 2016 IEEE.

This article introduces methods and limitations of using inertial measurement unit as a human-machine interface in remote control of a mobile platform. Such interface does not require both hands for safe operation and provides better mobility for the human operator. Article analyzes and mathematically describes processing of the readings obtained from the inertial measurement unit and their conversion into remote control commands. During experiments we have used operator interface containing inertial measurement unit for remote control of the 4-wheeled mobile platform with Ackermantype steering system. © 2016 IEEE.
