We study optimal control for sampled-data systems with stochastic delays. Assuming that the delays can be modeled by a Markov chain and can be measured by controllers, we design a control law that minimizes an infinite-horizon continuous-time quadratic cost function. The resulting optimal control law can be efficiently computed offline by the iteration of a certain Riccati difference equation. We also obtain sufficient conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities for stochastic stabilizability and detectability, which are used for the optimal controller design.

To design model-based controllers for industrial systems, an accurate mathematical model is necessary. Over time, most of these models are changed and the former controllers should be modified to achieve good performance. Hydro systems, according to their wide application over last forty years, are an interesting field of research. In this paper, based on the system identification and adaptive control theory, a special scheme for modeling and controller design of an old ElectroHydro servo-system is proposed. Industrial process control suffering from noise and saturation as two main problematic factors. Here by conducting an experiment, the identification and control are employed in linear period of the nonlinear system. To specify the order of system, Matlab Ident toolbox, Hankel matrix and Hankel singular values are used. Recursive Least Square (RLS) method is implemented to determine estimated parameters. Designing a practical self-tuning regulator is a significant task too. Due to the inappropriate results of controlled system, a corrected regulator is generated. Finally, acceptable simulations are recorded and demonstrated.

String stability and a delay-based spacing policy for vehicle platoons subject to disturbances

A novel delay-based spacing policy for the control of vehicle platoons is introduced together with a notion of disturbance string stability. The delay-based spacing policy specifies the desired inter-vehicular distance between vehicles and guarantees that all vehicles track the same spatially varying reference velocity profile, as is for example required for heavy-duty vehicles driving over hilly terrain. Disturbance string stability is a notion of string stability of vehicle platoons subject to external disturbances on all vehicles that guarantees that perturbations do not grow unbounded as they propagate through the platoon. Specifically, a control design approach in the spatial domain is presented that achieves tracking of the desired spacing policy and guarantees disturbance string stability with respect to a spatially varying reference velocity. The paper presents a test system for measuring air pollution based on a unmanned aerial vehicle. Thanks to the usage of multi-socket microprocessor system, it is possible to measure simultaneously up to six different chemical compounds. Additionally, the humidity and pressure on the platform are measured. The wireless connection enables to save data locally and remotely. Data evaluation is performed by the flying unit carrying the designed and manufactured by authors device. The test was performed on the industrial cement plant site. Measurement results were visualised according to flight coordinates.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. In-core flux measurement is critical for monitoring and power regulation of a large core nuclear reactor. Self Powered Neutron Detectors (SPNDs) are used for measuring the neutron flux in a nuclear reactor. In this paper we propose an online method for SPND gross error detection, identification and estimation. The method uses linear models which are extracted from data and which adapt continuously in time. This adaption is made possible by use of recursive PCA. However, unlike existing recursive PCA approaches which make approximations to achieve recursion, our proposed approach does not make any approximation. We term our technique as `Recursive Principal Component Analysis: Exact Computation' (RPCA-EC). Use of recursion ensures that the computational requirements of RPCA-EC are low thereby facilitating online implementation. Continuous adaption ensures that the model evolves to adequately capture the time varying relationships amongst the SPNDs. The relationships amongst the SPNDs vary with time due to significant variations in the neutron flux profiles in the reactor with varying operating power levels in the reactor. We apply our proposed method on data taken from an operating nuclear reactor in India and compare results with alternate implementations. Results show that the false alarm rate of our implementation is reasonable thereby indicating that the model adapts to time varying relationships. Performance in presence of gross errors is also satisfactory.

The problem of output stabilization is studied for a class of linear hybrid systems subject to signal uncertainties: linear impulsive systems under dwell-time constraints. Two problems are considered. First, an interval observer estimating the set of admissible values for the state is designed. Next, an output stabilizing feedback design problem is studied where the stability is checked using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). To the best of our knowledge, interval observer approach has never been proposed for the stabilization of this class of hybrid systems. Efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated by computer experiments for Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) and Fault-Tolerant control (FTC) of a power split device with clutch for heavy-duty military vehicles. © 2017

We consider the symbolic controller synthesis approach to enforce safety specifications on perturbed, nonlinear control systems. In general, in each state of the system several control values might be applicable to enforce the safety requirement and in the implementation one has the burden of picking a particular control value out of possibly many. We present a class of implementation strategies to obtain a controller with certain performance guarantees. This class includes two existing implementation strategies from the literature, based on discounted payoff and mean-payoff games. We unify both approaches by using games characterized by a single discount factor determining the implementation. We evaluate different implementations from our class experimentally on two case studies. We show that the choice of the discount factor has a significant influence on the average long-term costs, and the best performance guarantee for the symbolic model does not result in the best implementation. Comparing the optimal choice of the discount factor here with the previously proposed values, the costs differ by a factor of up to 50. Our approach therefore yields a method to choose systematically a good implementation for safety controllers with quantitative objectives. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Photovoltaic (PV) power generation has made considerable developments in recent years. However, its intermittent and volatility of its output have seriously affected the security operation of the power system. In order to better understand the PV generation and provide sufficient data support for analysis the impacts, a novel generation method for PV power time series combining decomposition technique and Markov chain theory is presented here. It digs important factors from historical data from existing PV plants and then reproduce new data with similar patterns. In detail, the proposed method first decomposes the PV power time series into ideal output curve, amplitude parameter series, and random fluctuating component three parts. Then generating daily ideal output curve by the extraction of typical daily data, amplitude parameter series based on the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, and random component based on random sampling, respectively. Finally, the generated three parts are recombined into new PV power time series by the decomposition formula. Data obtained from real-world PV plants in Gansu, China, validates the effectiveness of the proposed method. The generated series can simulate the basic statistical, distribution, and fluctuation characteristics of the measured series. © 2017 Institution of engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.
