Handwritten signature verification is a classical technology. Which uses features extracted from signatures. The purpose of signature verification is to identify whether a testing signature image is the same as a template. In this study, a new off-line signature verification method based on symbolic representation and dynamic time warping is proposed. In the proposed symbolic representation, the distances between symbols are defined according to the average value of each segment rather than the distance calculated based on Gaussian distribution, which is used in traditional symbolic representations. The proposed dynamic time warping (DTW) method is used to detect the optimal path and an optimal verification result can then be obtained by comparing the fitting errors of all matching paths. To demonstrate the performance the proposed approach, the following experiment is carried out: firstly, a signature image was created by a person and this is used as the template. Secondly, a total of 100 signature images written by the same person were collected, and the false rejected rate (FRR) and false acceptance rate (FAR) are calculated using the proposed method. Thirdly, a total of 100 signature images written by 100 different people were collected, based on which the false acceptance rate is calculated. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is very promising, and the FRR and FAR values for the two group tests are 3% and 2% respectively.

This study presents a new method for walking gesture representation and recognition based on a symbolic representation. The symbolic representation is used to represent images which can be decomposed into a number of time series and the distance between time series can be characterized based on the distances between symbols. In this work, the distances between symbols are defined according to the average value of each segment rather than the distance calculated based on Gaussian distribution as used in traditional symbolic representations. The proposed method is applied to a short template video containing a number of walking steps (gestures). In the case studies we consider a database containing 104 test videos, taken from 101 people, and our objective is to identify whether a person in the testing video is the same person as in the template video (i.e. the training video), and the identification accuracy of the method is around 98%.

In this paper we develop a numerical method to solve nonlinear optimal control problems with final-state constraints. Specifically, we extend the PRojection Operator based Netwon's method for Trajectory Optimization (PRONTO), which was proposed by Hauser for unconstrained optimal control problems. While in the standard method final-state constraints can be only approximately handled by means of a terminal penalty, in this work we propose a methodology to meet the constraints exactly. Moreover, our method guarantees recursive feasibility of the final-state constraint. This is an appealing property especially in realtime applications in which one would like to be able to stop the computation even if the desired tolerance has not been reached, but still satisfy the constraints. Following the same conceptual idea of PRONTO, the proposed strategy is based on two main steps which (differently from the standard scheme) preserve the feasibility of the final-state constraints: (i) solve a quadratic approximation of the nonlinear problem to find a descent direction, and (ii) get a (feasible) trajectory by means of a feedback law (which turns out to be a nonlinear projection operator). To find the (feasible) descent direction we take advantage of final-state constrained Linear Quadratic optimal control methods, while the second step is performed by suitably designing a constrained version of the trajectory tracking projection operator. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is tested on the optimal state transfer of an inverted pendulum.

In this paper, we propose a novel relay selection policy based on the Hybrid Relay Selection (HRS) relay selection protocol that takes into account the state of the buffers and aims at reducing the average packet delays in the network. The proposed protocol, called the Delay-Aware HRS (DA - HRS) protocol is analyzed by means of Markov Chains and expressions for the outage probability, throughput and delay are derived. The distributed implementation of the protocol is also discussed. The performance of our proposed protocol is demonstrated via extensive simulations and comparisons with the classical HRS.

This paper presents a disturbance feedforward control strategy for active vibration isolation systems with internal air mount dynamics. First, a parametric model of an air mount system including a Helmholtz resonance is derived, which is an extension to the widely used massless spring-damper models for vibration isolators. Second, a self-tuning feedforward controller is proposed that fine-tunes the parameters of the model online. This refers to zeros only because the poles of the resulting controller are fixed in orthonormal basis functions to obtain preferable convergence properties. Simulations show the effectiveness of the control strategy and the sensitivity for estimation errors in the poles. It is shown that disturbance rejection can be improved up to 40 dB by taking into account the internal air mount dynamics in the feedforward controller.

Motion control applications traditionally operate with a single-rate, equidistant sampling scheme. For cost reasons, a current trend in industry is consolidating multiple applications on a single embedded platform. Generally, to deal with inter-application interference, a predictable scheduling policy allocates resource to the applications in these platforms. Realizing an equidistant sampling scheme on such shared platform is inflexible and often turns out to be expensive in terms of resource or conservative in terms of performance. The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibilities to relax the equidistant sampling convention. To this end, recent results show that platform timing properties can be represented by a known, precise, and periodically varying set of sampling periods. In view of such predictable platforms, a framework is presented for analysis and synthesis of lifted domain feedforward controllers for periodically time-varying closed-loop systems. Through simulations the potential of such periodically time-varying sampling over conservative equidistant sampling schemes is demonstrated.

In this study, we present an effective hybrid algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO), called PSO-TLBO, to solve multi-objective optimization (MOO) problems. In PSO-TLBO, teacher phase and learner phase in TLBO are incorporated to a PSO to improve the exploration and exploitation ability. Another feature of PSO-TLBO is the improved circular crowed sorting (CCS) to truncate the external archive which stores the nondominated solutions found during the search. Moreover, the polynomial mutation is used only when the velocities of all solutions are very small. The performance of PSO-TLBO algorithm for MOO is tested on ZDT and DTLZ benchmarks functions and compared with some powerful MOO algorithms in terms of both convergence and spread performance. Also, the contribution of CCS is compared with crowded sorting in NSGA-II. Comparison results reveal the powerful ability of PSO-TLBO to obtain remarkable solutions in terms of inverted generational distance (IGD) metrics.

Commercial photovoltaic microinverter topologies are normally composed of two stages: a step-up dc-dc stage and a step-down dc-ac stage. Nevertheless, to achieve high-ratio conversion, a high frequency transformer is used in the dc-dc stage, resulting in a bulky configuration with a high cost of implementation. To minimize these issues, a single stage boost inverter is proposed, composed by two bidirectional boost dc-dc converter. The control of this topology is complex due to its high non-linearity behaviour. Therefore, this paper presents a control methodology based on Finite control Set Model Predictive control (FCS-MP) algorithm with predictions of the system variables through the inverter model and an optimization process. Each boost dc-dc converter of the inverter is regulated to achieve an output signal composed of the sinusoidal wave with a dc bias. The main features of the boost inverter and predictive control are analysed. Simulations are shown in order to validate the proposed control and the converter for grid-connected PV applications.

A method for the nonparametric estimation of the Frequency Response Function (FRF) was introduced in Hägg et al. (2011) and later called Transient Impulse Response Modeling Method (trimm). We present here a slightly improved version of the original method and, more importantly, we thoroughly analyze the method in terms of bias and variance errors. This analysis leads to guidelines for the choice of the design parameters in trimm. Our theoretical expressions for the bias and variance errors are validated by simulations which, at the same time, highlight the effect of the design parameters on the performance of the method. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. We introduce a novel distributed control architecture for disturbances attenuation in heterogeneous platoons of linear and time-invariant autonomous agents that inherits the performance achievable by the leader-follower control policies. We provide a Youla-like parameterization for the class of all distributed controllers such that the sparsity constraints are imposed on the controllers' left coprime factors, outlining a new concept of structural constraints in distributed control. The proposed scheme lends itself to optimal controller design via norm based costs, it guarantees string stability and completely eliminates the accordion effect from the behavior of the platoon. The distributed controller is proven to attain global optimality for heterogeneous platoons and ℋ 2 costs and can easily reconfigure such as to remain optimal during formation merging/exiting maneuvers. The scheme is amenable to a GPS time base synchronization mechanism, allowing for the exact compensation of the time delays induced by the wireless communications.
