This contribution presents and analyzes modeling and minimum cost operation of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and electrolyzers. First, detailed thermoelectric models of the electrochemical technologies based on a first-principle approach are presented. Then, as the detailed nonlinear models developed are intractable for use in online optimal control computation, a mixed integer linear program (MILP) is formulated with a piecewise affine approximation of the conversion efficiency and linear temperature dynamics for the devices. The outputs of the simplified linear models are compared with the detailed ones, when optimally producing and consuming a fixed quantity of hydrogen gas. Comparisons are performed for a variety of price scenarios and efficiency approximations, for both the fuel cell and electrolyzer.

Current state-of-the-art linear parameter-varying (LPV) control design methods presume that an LPV state-space (SS) model of the system with affine dependence on the scheduling variable is available. However, many existing LPV-SS identification schemes either suffer heavily from computational issues related to the curse of dimensionality or are based on severe approximations. To overcome these issues, in this paper, the Bayesian framework is combined with a recently developed efficient SS realization scheme. We propose a computationally attractive 3-step approach for identifying LPV-SS models. In Step 1, the sub-Markov parameters representing the impulse response of the system are estimated in a Bayesian setting, using kernel based Ridge regression with hyper-parameter tuning via marginal likelihood optimization. Subsequently, in Step 2, an LPV-SS realization is obtained by using an efficient basis reduced Ho-Kalman like deterministic SS realization scheme on the identified impulse response. Finally, in Step 3, to reach the maximum likelihood estimate, the LPV-SS model is refined by applying a Bayesian expectation-maximization method. The performance of the proposed 3-step scheme is demonstrated on a Monte-Carlo simulation study.

An efficient recognition framework requires both good feature representation and effective classification methods. This paper proposes such a framework based on a spatial Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) combined with a logistic regression classifier. The performance of the proposed framework is compared to that of state-of-the-art methods based on the Histogram of Orientation Gradients, SIFT features, Support Vector Machine and K-Nearest Neighbours classifiers. By testing with the largest vehicle logo data-set, it is shown that the proposed framework can achieve a classification accuracy of 99.93%, the best among all studied methods. Moreover, the proposed framework shows robustness when noise is added in both training and testing images.

We introduce a scalable observer architecture to estimate the states of a discrete-time linear-time-invariant (LTI) system whose sensors can be manipulated by an attacker. Given the maximum number of attacked sensors, we build on previous results on necessary and sufficient conditions for state estimation, and propose a novel multi-modal Luenberger (MML) observer based on efficient Satisfiability Modulo Theory (SMT) solving. We present two techniques to reduce the complexity of the estimation problem. As a first strategy, instead of a bank of distinct observers, we use a family of filters sharing a single dynamical equation for the states, but different output equations, to generate estimates corresponding to different subsets of sensors. Such an architecture can reduce the memory usage of the observer from an exponential to a linear function of the number of sensors. We then develop an efficient SMT-based decision procedure that is able to reason about the estimates of the MML observer to detect at runtime which sets of sensors are attack-free, and use them to obtain a correct state estimate. We provide proofs of convergence for our algorithm and report simulation results to compare its runtime performance with alternative techniques. Our algorithm scales well for large systems (including up to 5000 sensors) for which many previously proposed algorithms are not implementable due to excessive memory and time requirements. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithm on the design of resilient power distribution systems.

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the laser processing on the properties of electro-spark coatings. The properties were assessed by analyzing the coating microstructure, X-ray radiation, microhardness, corrosion resistance, porosity and tribological tests. In addition, the paper presents the results of measurements and analysis of electrical pulse during ESD. The tests were carried out on WC-Cu coating (the anode) obtained by electro spark deposition over carbon steel C45 (the cathode) and molten with a laser beam. The coatings were deposited by means of the EIL-8A and they were laser treated with the Nd:YAG. The tests show that the laser-treated electro-spark deposited WC-Cu coatings are characterized by lower hardness and friction force, higher seizure resistance, roughness. The laser treatment process causes the homogenization of the chemical composition, the structure refinement and the healing of microcracks and pores of the electro-spark deposited coatings. Laser treated electro-spark deposited coatings are likely to be applied in sliding friction pairs and as protective coatings.

A tensor-based framework for studying eigenvector multicentrality in multilayer networks

Centrality is widely recognized as one of the most critical measures to provide insight in the structure and function of complex networks. While various centrality measures have been proposed for single-layer networks, a general framework for studying centrality in multilayer networks (i.e., multicentrality) is still lacking. In this study, a tensor-based framework is introduced to study eigenvector multicentrality, which enables the quantification of the impact of interlayer influence on multicentrality, providing a systematic way to describe how multicentrality propagates across different layers. This framework can leverage prior knowledge about the interplay among layers to better characterize multicentrality for varying scenarios. Two interesting cases are presented to illustrate how to model multilayer influence by choosing appropriate functions of interlayer influence and design algorithms to calculate eigenvector multicentrality. This framework is applied to analyze several empirical multilayer networks, and the results corroborate that it can quantify the influence among layers and multicentrality of nodes effectively. This paper considers the collision avoidance problem in a multi-agent multi-obstacle framework. The originality in solving this intensively studied problem resides in the proposed geometrical view combined with differential flatness for trajectory generation and B-splines for the flat output parametrization. Using some important properties of these theoretical tools we show that the constraints can be validated at all times. Exact and sub-optimal constructions of the collision avoidance optimization problem are provided. The results are validated through extensive simulations over standard autonomous aerial vehicle dynamics.

In this paper, we analyze the L 2 -gain of a class of switched linear systems under sampled-data state-feedback control. We consider switched linear systems whose switching signal is a regenerative process. Using the lifting approach and piecewise-constant approximations, we derive a sequence whose limit inferior upper-bounds the L 2 -gain of the closed-loop system. Each term of the sequence can be found by solving a linear matrix inequality. We illustrate the results by the L 2 -gain analysis of a linear system with a failure-prone controller.

The tracking/rejection of periodic disturbances in linear systems is achievable via internal model principle-based techniques, such as repetitive control. However, when the frequency of the signal to track/reject is uncertain or time-varying, the performance of these controllers decays dramatically. This article discusses the basics of Model Reference Adaptive control with Minimal controller Synthesis, and assesses its applicability to this problem from a comparative study of the performance of this type of controllers and a repetitive controller, both designed to regulate the speed of a DC motor subject to periodic disturbances. The study is supported by experimental results.

A combinatorial approach has been recently proposed for multi-parametric quadratic programming and has shown to be more effective in finding the complete solution than existing geometric methods for higher-order systems. In this paper, we propose a method for exploring the combinatorial tree which exploits some of the underlying geometric properties of adjacent critical regions as the supplementary information in combinatorial approach to exclude a noticeable number of feasible candidate active sets from combinatorial tree. This method is particularly well-suited for cases where many combinations of active constraints are feasible but not optimal. Results indicate that this method can find all critical regions corresponding to non-degenerate multi-parametric programming. A postprocessing algorithm can be applied to complete the proposed method in the cases in which some critical regions might not be enumerated due to degeneracies in the problem.
