The massive penetration of renewable energy sources in the utility grid has emerged as the solution to obtain clean energy in modern electric systems, which are gradually replacing their generators that produce CO 2 emissions to achieve a sustainable growing. Power electronics is quite relevant in the deep penetration of renewable energy, because the use of such equipment is mandatory to integrate these new resources with the existing facilities. In order to reach higher power ranges, multilevel topologies are the state-of-the-art solution, due to the limited rating of the actual semiconductor devices. Furthermore, latest trends show that asymmetric multilevel configurations are an attractive technology to connect directly the power converters to the grid. This paper analyze the photovoltaic energy injection to microgrids using a hybrid approach that mixes the existing topologies: string, multistring and central inverter to implement an asymmetric structure that generate highly sinusoidal resulting waveforms. This document includes a simple analysis of the proposed configuration and highlights the advantages of using an asymmetric converter, supported with stationary and dynamic simulated results.

This study investigated the adaptive detection principle based on a single artificial neuron, and constructed a method for detecting harmonics using the artificial neural network technique. Based on the established method, and by comprehensively processing the obtained harmonics data using the LabVIEW software-developing environment of the virtual instrument, the harmonic waves were detected and analyzed. Finally, the analysis of current ball crusher harmonics verified that the designed system was effective.

This paper presents development of a fuzzy logic control (FLC) system with bio-inspired optimization algorithm for reference tracking control of a single-link flexible manipulator. In the proposed controller, a modified invasive weed optimization (MIWO) algorithm is employed to optimize the tuning parameters of fuzzy logic controller. Invasive weed optimization (IWO) is a bio-inspired search algorithm that mimics how weeds colonize a certain area in nature. Although the IWO algorithm is good at exploring a certain search space, it is found less effective in getting accurate results. The algorithm is modified by applying local knowledge in the standard deviation of its reproduction of offspring in each generation to narrow the accuracy and improve the local search ability. The MIWO algorithm is tested with five benchmark functions and the result are compared with those of the original invasive weed optimization algorithm. The original IWO and MIWO are used as parameter tuners for the developed FLC mechanism to evaluate the effectiveness of the modified algorithm. The performances of the tuned controllers based on MIWO and IWO are evaluated based on the hub-able output of the flexible manipulator system. The overall results show that the proposed MIWO algorithm gives better performance in comparison to its original predecessor algorithm.

This study presents a hybrid invasive weed firefly optimization (HIWFO) algorithm to solve engineering optimization design problems. The unconstrained and engineering constrained design problems with continuous design variables are used to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm. Firefly algorithm (FA) has deficit on getting trapped at local optimum and invasive weed optimization (IWO) is effective with accurate global search ability. Therefore, the idea of hybridization between IWO and FA has obtained a more robust optimization technique, especially trying to compensate for the deficiencies of the individual algorithms. In the proposed algorithm, the firefly method is embedded into the invasive weed optimization to enhance the local search capability of IWO algorithm that already has very good exploration capability. The performance and evaluation of the proposed method are tested with four well-known unconstrained problems and two engineering design problems. A comparative assessment with the original FA and IWO carried out on the unconstrained problem clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the hybrid algorithm. Moreover, in dealing with the practical design problems, the HIWFO algorithm is also compared to other algorithm methods to illustrate its effectiveness. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that the HIWFO algorithm has superior searching quality and robustness than other mentioned approaches.
