This paper addresses control and scheduling code-sign problem for multiple control loops sharing a common communication and computation medium, known also as networked embedded control system (NECS) in literature. Besides the limited communication medium, physical limitations on control inputs and/or states are considered as well. To avoid unnecessary use of the limited communication medium, each control loop is equipped with a model-based event generator requesting a network access only if a necessity exists and thus minimizing the traffic load on the network. The NECS with uncertain but interval-bounded time-varying communication and computation delays is modeled as a discrete-time switched poly-topic system. Based on the resulting model and the proposed model-based event generators, the codesign problem is then introduced and formulated as an LMI optimization problem which can be solved completely offline. The effectiveness of the codesign strategy is evaluated for networked control of an active suspension system. Noteworthy, the proposed strategy is generally applicable to discrete-time switched polytopic systems.

This work continues the paper [1] and it deals with a multipurpose biotechnological plant which includes a photobioreactor interconnected with an anaerobic digester. In the paper linearized models of reduced order for anaerobic digester and for the entire biotechnological plant are obtained. These models of reduced order are determined from detailed models of 35 th order for anaerobic digester and of 51 th order for the entire plant using Hankel analysis. It is proposed a control structure of the plant in which the photobioreactor's control loop drives the one of anaerobic digester. The results obtained in [1] and in the present paper offer the necessary information (i.e. models and control structure configurations) to the controllers design for the control loops of the multipurpose biotechnological plant.

Absolute stability attracted much attention in the sixties. Several stability conditions for loops with slope-restricted nonlinearities were developed. Results such as the Circle Criterion and the Popov Criterion form part of the core curriculum for students of control. Moreover, the equivalence of results obtained by different techniques, specifically Lyapunov and Popov's stability theories, led to one of the most important results in controlengineering: the KYP Lemma. For Lurye systems this work culminated in the class of multipliers proposed by O'Shea in 1966 and formalised by Zames and Falb in 1968. The superiority of this class was quickly and widely accepted. Nevertheless the result was ahead of its time as graphical techniques were preferred in the absence of readily available computer optimization. Its first systematic use as a stability criterion came twenty years after the initial proposal of the class. A further twenty years have been required to develop a proper understanding of the different techniques that can be used. In this long gestation some significant knowledge has been overlooked or forgotten. Most significantly, O'Shea's contribution and insight is no longer acknowledged;his papers are barely cited despite his original parameterization of the class. This tutorial paper aims to provide a clear and comprehensive introduction to the topic from a user's viewpoint. We review the main results: the stability theory, the properties of the multipliers (including their phase properties, phase-equivalence results and the issues associated with causality), and convex searches. For clarity of exposition we restrict our attention to continuous time multipliers for single-input single-output results. Nevertheless we include several recent significant developments by the authors and others. We illustrate all these topics using an example proposed by O'Shea himself.

As a cost-effective option for Cloud consumers, spot service has been considered to be a significant supplement for building a full-fledged market economy for the Cloud ecosystem. However, unlike the static and straightforward way of trading on-demand and reserved Cloud services, the market-driven regulations of employing spot service could be too complicated for Cloud consumers to comprehensively understand. In particular, it would be both difficult and tedious for potential consumers to determine suitable bids from time to time. To reduce the complexity in applying spot resources, we propose to use a feedback control to help make bidding decisions. Based on an arccotangent-function-type system model, our novel bidding mechanism imitates fuzzy and intuitive human activities to refine and issue new bids according to previous errors. The validation is conducted by using Amazon's historical spot price trace to perform a set of simulations and comparisons. The result shows that the feedback control-based mechanism obtains a better trade-off between bidding rationality and success rate than the other five comparable strategies. Although this mechanism is only for black-box bidding (price prediction) at this current stage, it can be conveniently and gradually upgraded to take into account external constraints in the future.

Although setpoint tracking problems are common in practice, they are still widely unexplored in the event-triggered control framework. Therefore, an event-triggered PI control design strategy with guaranteed performance for networked controlsystems is proposed in this paper. The integral state of the proposed PI controller is updated at every sampling instant. The update is done by the proposed event generator and sent with new measurements to the PI controller when necessary. Based on a discretized system model and a quadratic cost function, the event-triggered PI control design problem is introduced and formulated as an LMI optimization problem. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is then experimentally evaluated and compared with other existing strategies in the literature for a case study.
