Damage in many civil and mechanical structural systems can induce nonlinear behaviors in the system responses. Such damage includes breathing cracks, clearance between subassemblies, and looseness etc, and nonlinear stiffness and/or damping etc components are often used to represent the characteristics of damaged components of this nature [1, 2]. As a result, the existence of these damaged components could be detected and their locations could be found out by analyzing nonlinear features of the system responses. Motivated by this observation, in the present study, a new transmissibility analysis based approach is proposed to address this significant engineering structure damage detection and location problem. Traditional transmissibility analysis has been studied extensively for damage detection and fault diagnosis [3-5]. However, there are many problems when applying this approach in practice. Firstly, traditional transmissibility between two system responses depends on the location of the loading on the system. Namely, if the loading acts on the system at a different location, the transmissibility between the two responses will be different. Consequently, the position of loading on monitored systems has to be known a priori, which implies that traditional transmissibility based methods may not be able to be applied in many practical systems. In addition, because traditional transmissibility is basically a linear system concept, it cannot be used to propose a systematic approach to detecting and locating damage of nonlinear features as mentioned above. The present study proposes a novel transmissibility analysis based technique to detect and locate damaged components in a class of multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF) structural systems by using nonlinear features of the system responses. This paper proposes a method for the construction of piecewise affine terminal cost functions for model predictive control (MPC). The terminal cost function is constructed on a predefined partition by solving a linear program for a given piecewise affine system, a stabilizing piecewise affine controller, an invariant set and a piecewise convex stage cost function. The constructed terminal cost function satisfies the sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability if it is used in anMPC scheme. In general, the constructed terminal cost function will be nonconvex. However, optional additional constraints in the linear program ensure that the cost function is convex, reducing the computational effort involved with solving the MPC optimization problem. We propose in this paper an inexact dual gradient algorithm based on augmented Lagrangian theory and inexact information for the values of dual function and its gradient. We study the computational complexity certification of the proposed method and we provide estimates on primal and dual suboptimality and also on primal infeasibility. Observers are important components of dynamic positioning (DP) systems for marine vessels, estimating unmeasured states, filtering noise, filtering out wave induced motions, and predicting states in the case of signal loss. In this paper, a sensor-based hybrid observer concept is investigated. The concept assumes that noisy position measurements are available only occasionally at a non-constant sampling rate. Predictions of position between the samples are provided by integrating acceleration measurements, which are available at a high rate (approximated to be continuous sampling). Estimates with smaller variance are computed by averaging multiple observer copies of position and velocity. The contributions of this paper include the design, stability analysis and simulation of a sensor-based hybrid observer combining noisy acceleration, velocity and position measurements of a vessel in DP using different sampling rates.
