This study compares the technical, economic and environmental performance of hybrid renewable energy systems in Iran, Honduras, and Zambia. The system integrates biomass, PV, converters, and battery storage. Homer-Pro is used to simulate the system and investigate sensitivity factors such as discount rate, inflation rate, fuel availability, pricing, carbon emissions, and capacity shortages. The results show that increased biomass costs, fuel supply constraints, and CO2 penalties encourage the use of solar energy and battery storage, increasing overall project costs. Zarinkola experiences the largest cost increase due to higher biomass consumption and peak load. Capacity Shortage generally reduces costs, but higher rates are needed for Zarinkola and Honduras. Avoiding GHG penalties is crucial for justifying renewable energy projects in Iran's unstable economy. Increased fuel prices significantly impact NPC and COE. Results reveal that higher inflation and discount rates lead to a 1.28% and 4.29% increase in Net Present Cost.

Tool wear monitoring using an online, automatic and low cost system based on local texture

In this work we propose a new online, low cost and fast approach based on computer vision and machine learning to determine whether cutting tools used in edge profile milling processes are serviceable or disposable based on their wear level. We created a new dataset of 254 images of edge profile cutting heads which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first publicly available dataset with enough quality for this purpose. All the inserts were segmented and their cutting edges were cropped, obtaining 577 images of cutting edges: 301 functional and 276 disposable. The proposed method is based on (1) dividing the cutting edge image in different regions, called Wear Patches (WP), (2) characterising each one as worn or serviceable using texture descriptors based on different variants of Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and (3) determine, based on the state of these WP, if the cutting edge (and, therefore, the tool) is serviceable or disposable. We proposed and assessed five different patch division configurations. The individual WP were classified by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) with an intersection kernel. The best patch division configuration and texture descriptor for the WP achieves an accuracy of 90.26% in the detection of the disposable cutting edges. This work proposes a distributed robust control architecture for meshed DC Microgrid networks. Each interlinking converter is modelled as a network node and is connected in parallel to a constant power load representing the network’s power consumption. Each node employs a local controller consisting of two parts; current regulation based on a modified version of the state-limiting PI and a distributed MPC driving the system to desired setpoints. We analytically prove each controller’s robustness to model variations caused by changes in both the power demand and the transmitted information among the subsystems. The concept of positive invariance sets and the inherent robustness properties of the nominal MPC are used to prove recursive feasibility of the optimal control problem and guarantee constraint satisfaction at all times. The stability proof of the cascaded node dynamics is based upon the emerging properties of both the state limiting PI and the distributed MPC design. Demonstration of the results is given in a simulated scenario.

Predicting electrical loads is critical since it requires the preparation of work schedules for main and minor transformer maintenance operations. This study aims to estimate the maximum evening electricity loads in Jordan in order to plan preventive maintenance. Because the data contains two sorts of patterns, trend and seasonal, methods that address both of these patterns must be applied. Long-term maximum peak forecasting for the next five years from 2022 to 2027 is performed by utilizing a weighted combination of two methods: Feed Forward Back Propagation Neural Network and Holt-Winters. The Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average method is also used and found of less accuracy than the two other models. A near-optimal weighted combination of the Neural Network Model and Holt-Winter is then obtained by using a non-linear optimization local search heuristic model. The new model results are of high accuracy that the value of R2 was increased from 70.2 % for the Neural Network Model and 82.4 % for the Holt-Winters method to 84.3 % in the weighted combination between them. Moreover, the value of Mean Absolute Error was decreased to from 134 and 188 for the Holt-Winter and Neural Network models respectively to become 117.98. Upon the results, recommendations are provided to the decision-makers. © 2022 IEEE.

We address the problem of event-triggered networked control of nonlinear systems under simultaneous deception and Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. By DoS attacks, we refer to disruptions in the communication channel that prevent sensor measurements from reaching the controller. When the system undergoes a deception attack, the controller receives a modified output, deviating from the sensor’s original measurement. We implement the input delay approach and the Lyapunov-Krasovskii technique to obtain sufficient conditions, expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), that characterize the duration of the DoS interruptions under which input-to-state stability (ISS) of the closed-loop system is preserved. Furthermore, we explore scenarios involving simultaneous attacks, where the DoS is modeled as a stochastic Bernoulli process. The closed-loop system is then considered as a stochastic impulsive system. In a similar manner, we derive conditions to ensure mean-square ISS for this case. A numerical example illustrates the efficiency of the results.

This paper introduces a robust controller designed for load frequency control in a dual-area integrated power grid. Here, the suggested controller is a blend of a fuzzy logic controller with an integral controller. The parameters of the integral controller and frequency bias settings are optimized to enhance the dynamic response of the proposed controller. To attain this, three distinct optimization algorithms are employed, i.e., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and pattern search. A new objective function using settling time, settling-max, and settling-min with a suitable weight factor is used to improve the parameters estimation process. A comparative analysis is performed using the proposed approach and classical-I controller under two cases considering several load disturbance scenarios. Furthermore, the suggested hybrid controller is evaluated and compared with similar models in the literature. As expected, the proposed controller exhibits superior performance. © 2023 IEEE.

The use of robotics in manufacturing is rapidly growing. One promising application in particular is the use of robots as machining platforms. Robotic machining offers many advantages such as large operating envelopes, flexibility in operations and low installation and running costs. Robotic machining platforms much like computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools are commanded by numerical controllers (NCs) using the well established G-code part programming language (ISO-6983). Toolpaths are defined in the work piece coordinate system (WCS) as a series of discrete tool centre point (TCP) positions and tool orientations. The role of the NC is to generate smooth feed drive or robot joint commands such that the tool or end effector travels along the commanded toolpath whilst satisfying TCP position and orientation tolerances and robot/machine tool kinematic constraints. Interpolating tool orientations directly in the WCS requires complex real-time spherical interpolation computations. Overcoming this challenge, this paper introduces a C4 continuous tool path trajectory generation method for 6DOF motion. The tool centre point position is smoothed in the WCS, however, the tool orientation is smoothed directly in the rotary coordinate system without the requirement for spherical interpolation. The interpolated tool orientation trajectory follows the path of the great circle arc using the modified Haversine method eliminating non-linear interpolation errors present in linear interpolation of rotary axis positions (machine coordinate system interpolation). This work presents the design, construction, and validation of a chamber for magnetic field attenuation. Needs of magnetic background controlling during experiments focused on behavior of biological samples exposed to various levels of the low frequency time-varying magnetic field set the motivation for this work. The solution is proposed with regard to the correct cultivation conditions of microbiological samples. The chosen methodology is established on the means of numerical modeling and simulations, as well as 3D printing techniques. The design process incorporates computer-aided design (CAD) software for the chamber proposal, subsequent printing via a 3D printer, followed by the construction of an attenuating chamber using mu-metal foil. The validation process involves measurements of magnetic flux density within the chamber, and comparison thereof with numerical simulations performed via CST Design Studio. All the solution steps resulted in a valid and effective magnetic field attenuation chamber, suitable for use in laboratory conditions.

This research provides an objective for a new approach to increase the hybrid Savonius-Darrieus Tip Speed Ratio range in a low-wind speed experiment (0–12 m/s) by considering the effect of power loss from the DC generator used. The models used are hybrid Savonius-Darrieus and single Darrieus with 4 blades. 2 stages of Savonius with 0.2 overlap and a 135° bucket angle are used as internal rotors, while the external rotor is a NREL S809 Darrieus airfoil with a cord length of 7 cm. A DC generator with a maximum voltage of 12 V is used. The friction, copper, and iron loss coefficients of the DC generator are 4.131, and 0.013, respectively. In the low wind speed experiment, the maximum Tip Speed Ratio that can be measured is around 1. Furthermore, by applying the improvement method in measurement, which involves applying constant current and variable voltage, the Tip Speed Ratio can reach 3.5-4. Thus, according to the findings, the hybrid Savonius-Darrieus and single Darrieus have maximum Power Coefficients of 0.30 at the Tip Speed Ratio of 1.5 and 0.33 at the Tip Speed Ratio of 3.3, respectively.
