This paper addresses the problem of autonomous robot navigation in unknown, obstacle-filled environments with second-order dynamics by proposing a Dissipative Avoidance Feedback (DAF). Compared to the Artificial Potential Field (APF), which primarily uses repulsive forces based on position, DAF employs a dissipative feedback mechanism that accounts for both position and velocity, contributing to smoother and more natural obstacle avoidance. The proposed continuously differentiable controller solves the motion-to-goal problem while guaranteeing collision-free navigation by using the robot’s state and local obstacle distance information. We show that the controller guarantees safe navigation in generic n-dimensional environments and that all undesired ω-limit points are unstable under certain controlled curvature conditions. Designed for real-time implementation, DAF requires only locally measured data from limited-range sensors (e.g., LiDAR, depth cameras), making it particularly effective for robots navigating unknown workspaces. Reinforcement learning(RL) has roots in dynamic programming and it is called adaptive/approximate dynamic programming(ADP) within the control community. This paper reviews recent developments in ADP along with RL and its applications to various advanced control fields. First, the background of the development of ADP is described, emphasizing the significance of regulation and tracking control problems. Some effective offline and online algorithms for ADP/adaptive critic control are displayed, where the main results towards discrete-time systems and continuous-time systems are surveyed, ***, the research progress on adaptive critic control based on the event-triggered framework and under uncertain environment is discussed, respectively, where event-based design, robust stabilization, and game design are reviewed. Moreover, the extensions of ADP for addressing control problems under complex environment attract enormous attention. The ADP architecture is revisited under the perspective of data-driven and RL frameworks,showing how they promote ADP formulation ***, several typical control applications with respect to RL and ADP are summarized, particularly in the fields of wastewater treatment processes and power systems, followed by some general prospects for future research. Overall, the comprehensive survey on ADP and RL for advanced control applications has d emonstrated its remarkable potential within the artificial intelligence era. In addition, it also plays a vital role in promoting environmental protection and industrial intelligence.

Risk-Aware Wasserstein Distributionally Robust control of Vessels in Natural Waterways

In the realm of maritime transportation, autonomous vessel navigation in natural inland waterways faces persistent challenges due to unpredictable natural factors. Existing scheduling algorithms fall short in handling these uncertainties, compromising both safety and efficiency. Moreover, these algorithms are primarily designed for non-autonomous vessels, leading to labor-intensive operations vulnerable to human error. To address these issues, this study proposes a risk-aware motion control approach for vessels that accounts for the dynamic and uncertain nature of tide islands in a distributionally robust manner. Specifically, a model predictive control method is employed to follow the reference trajectory in the time-space map while incorporating a risk constraint to prevent grounding accidents. To address uncertainties in tide islands, a novel modeling technique represents them as stochastic polytopes. Additionally, potential inaccuracies in waterway depth are addressed through a risk constraint that considers the worst-case uncertainty distribution within a Wasserstein ambiguity set around the empirical distribution. Using sensor data collected in the Guadalquivir River, we empirically demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through simulations on a vessel. As a result, the vessel successfully navigates the waterway while avoiding grounding accidents, even with a limited dataset of observations. This stands in contrast to existing non-robust controllers, highlighting the robustness and practical applicability of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The optimization of crop harvesting processes for commonly cultivated crops is of great importance in the aim of agricultural industrialization. Nowadays, the utilization of machine vision has enabled the automated identification of crops, leading to the enhancement of harvesting efficiency, but challenges still exist. This study presents a new framework that combines two separate architectures of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in order to simultaneously accomplish the tasks of crop detection and harvesting (robotic manipulation) inside a simulated environment. Crop images in the simulated environment are subjected to random rotations, cropping, brightness, and contrast adjustments to create augmented images for dataset generation. The You Only Look Once(YOLO) algorithmic framework is employed with traditional Rectangular Bounding Boxes (R-Bbox) for crop localization. The proposed method subsequently utilises the acquired image data via a visual geometry group model in order to reveal the grasping positions for the robotic manipulation. © 2024 IEEE.

This study introduces an innovative actuator that resembles a motor with a non-uniform permanent magnetic field. We have developed a prototype of the actuator by combining a standard motor, characterized by a uniform magnetic field, with a custom rotary magnetic spring exhibiting a non-uniform magnetic field. We have also presented a systematic computational approach to customize the magnetic field to minimize the energy consumption of the actuator when used for a user-defined oscillatory task. Experiments demonstrate that this optimized actuator significantly lowers energy consumption in a typical oscillatory task, such as pick-and-place or oscillatory limb motion during locomotion, compared to conventional motors. Our findings imply that incorporating task-optimized non-uniform permanent magnetic fields into conventional motors and direct-drive actuators could enhance the energy efficiency of robotic systems.

In this paper, we present an architecture for a scalable, efficient, realtime intra H.264 video encoder implemented on an FPGA. Our architecture was designed to achieve a through-put of up to 2.3 Gbit/s using a parallel and pipelined architecture described in VHDL. All modules in the architecture are optimized to utilize minimum hardware area. A parameterized encoding system and flexible architecture is proposed to provide the ability to achieve different compression ratios ranging from 1.4 to 2 with varying size and power requirements. As a baseline, with no compression, the encoder required hardware resources equivalent to 18K logic gates. This work experimented with compression ratios up to 2 which required an equivalent of 31K logic gates. The encoder performs at frequency ranges of 159–183 MHz.

In this paper, an active fault tolerant control method for spacecraft against actuator faults, uncertainties and disturbances is investigated. First, an adaptive iterative learning observer with improved adaptive law is proposed, which greatly improves the accuracy and speed of fault estimation. Then, a novel adaptive finite time prescribed performance fault tolerant controller is proposed, which has flexible performance constraints according to faults and control references, with better robustness and lower conservatism, breaking the limitation of fixed performance constraint. Next, an online optimal control allocation strategy is designed to achieve high-performance actuator allocation under saturation and fault constraints. Finally, through numerical simulation, the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed scheme are illustrated by comparing with existing methods.

Motion systems are a vital part of many industrial processes. However, meeting the increasingly stringent demands of these systems, especially concerning precision and throughput, requires novel control design methods that can go beyond the capabilities of traditional solutions. Traditional control methods often struggle with the complexity and position-dependent effects inherent in modern motion systems, leading to compromises in performance and a laborious task of controller design. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a novel structured feedback control auto-tuning approach for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) motion systems. By leveraging frequency response function (FRF) estimates and the linear-parameter-varying (LPV) control framework, the proposed approach automates the controller design, while providing local stability and performance guarantees. Key innovations include norm-based magnitude optimization of the sensitivity functions, an automated stability check through a novel extended factorized Nyquist criterion, a modular structured MIMO LPV controller parameterization, and a controller discretization approach which preserves the continuous-time (CT) controller parameterization. This paper discusses a 3D design of multi-source energy system. Obstacles on railways present significant safety risks. In particular, Taiwan Railways (TR) often faces natural and man-made obstructions. While advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models offer precise detection, their high computational demands limit deployment. Thus, lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) models have been developed, balancing detection accuracy with hardware efficiency. Utilizing feature-extracting preprocessing, these models achieve $F 2$ scores above 0.89 and recalls over 0.9, while maintaining computational complexity under 15 MFLOPs and model sizes within 25 kB. This ensures compatibility with standard PCs and low-cost, low-power systems, enabling widespread deployment in regions lacking advanced AI monitoring. Additionally, TR’s aging block and train-tracking systems, which are prone to failures, are enhanced with a power-saving radio frequency identification(RFID) system compatible with the CNN detector and Bluetooth-enabled passenger displays. This modernizes TR’s infrastructure, improving safety operations and travel-information reliability.
