Experimental implementation of chaos-based video encryption using visible light communication technology

Simulations are commonly used to develop and evaluate video encryption algorithms. Although these approaches are useful for demonstrating theoretical feasibility and algorithm performance, they neglect practical challenges and real-world communication conditions. This oversight creates a critical gap in evaluating their effectiveness and security in practical applications. In this paper, we describe a novel, to the best of our knowledge, video encryption scheme that employs a modified chaotic Colpitts oscillator, a customized Josephus problem, and ribonucleic acid (RNA) operations, and is implemented in visible light communication (VLC) environment. The modified Colpitts oscillator reveals significant phenomena, the most prominent for this study being chaos. The encryption scheme involves block scrambling and pixel-level permutation employing a customized Josephus problem and a column and row shifting technique. Diffusion is then achieved through a custom Josephus problem-oriented RNA operation combined with basic RNA operations and cipher block chaining (CBC). Based on the results, we found that the customized Josephus problem-based permutation performed more efficiently than traditional methods, whereas the column and row shifting permutation was more robust. By eliminating key sequence coding and item-to-item operations, the proposed RNA operation reduces computational overhead. This video encryption scheme is proven to be effective and resilient at securing video data transmitted over the VLC channel, and it constitutes a significant advancement in areas such as surveillance, medical imaging, and military communication requiring robust secured video data. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. Access to adequate healthcare is critical for everyone, but people with disabilities often face considerable challenges in receiving reliable and timely medical treatment. The Vision 2030 plan in Saudi Arabia intends to change the healthcare system by incorporating new technologies that increase accessibility, efficiency, and service delivery. However, current healthcare systems continue to suffer from delays, inefficient data processing, and accessibility concerns, especially for the visually impaired. This study proposes a more decentralized healthcare system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models to improve healthcare services for individuals with disabilities. The system achieves real-time data processing, reduces latency, and enhances decision-making accuracy by combining federated learning and zero-shot architectures. Furthermore, smart technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and natural language processing (NLP) provide seamless data collection and analysis, allowing healthcare practitioners to provide prompt and personalized treatment. The suggested solution solves crucial issues such as inefficiencies in data processing, delays in obtaining medical information, and limits in current healthcare processes. This platform improves impaired people's freedom and mobility by delivering remote healthcare solutions using AI-powered diagnostics and real-time monitoring. This study contributes to a more inclusive and efficient healthcare system in Saudi Arabia by bridging the gap between technology and accessibility, which aligns with the Vision 2030 objective of providing fair healthcare services to everyone. © 2025 The Authors

Multi-view fuzzy clustering (MVFC) has gained widespread adoption owing to its inherent flexibility in handling ambiguous data. The proliferation of privatization devices has driven the emergence of new challenge in MVFC researches. Federated learning, a technique that can jointly train without directly using raw data, has gain significant attention in decentralized MVFC. However, their applicability depends on the assumptions of data integrity and independence between different views. In fact, while within distributed environments, data typically exhibits two challenging problems: (1) multiple views within a single client;(2) incomplete data. Existing methods exhibit limitations in effectively addressing these challenges. Hence, in this study, we aim at achieving the effective clustering for incomplete data by a novel vertical federated MVFC framework. Specifically, a unified clustering framework is designed to capture both local client learning and global server training. For the local client learning, the data reconstruction strategy and prototype alignment strategy are introduced to ensure the preservation of data structure and refinement of clustering relationships, which mitigates the impact of incomplete data. Meanwhile, the global training process implements aggregation based on client-specific information. The whole process is realized based on the unified fuzzy clustering framework, promoting collaborative learning between client-specific and server information. Theoretical analyses and extensive experiments are carefully conducted to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method from multiple perspectives. © 1993-2012 IEEE.

This paper presents the design of robotic rat forelimbs, scaled to 2.5 times the size of a female Sprague-Dawley rat. Based on a previous rat hindlimb model, significant enhancements were implemented to facilitate manufacturing, robustness, improve overall performance, and enhance biological accuracy. The two front legs are each equipped with five motors to enable sagittal rotations of the scapula, elbow, and wrist joints, along with scapula abduction and adduction. The leg segment dimensions are based on a scanned rat bones model, but the shapes are modified for 3D printing and assembly. Parts are printed using micro carbon fiber filled nylon, strengthened by various amounts of continuously inlaid carbon fiber. Revolute joints are driven by motors, and a pulley-belt transmission system is incorporated to move wrist and elbow motors higher up in order to reduce the inertia of the leg. Furthermore, the foot structure comprises two segments that are passively controlled by two torsion springs to enhance flexibility and facilitate a more naturalistic movement. Additionally, a new electrical board is integrated to enhance operational smoothness and align with the control scheme. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper studies the efficiency of training a statistical model among an edge server and multiple clients via Federated Learning (FL) - a machine learning method that preserves data privacy in the training process - over wireless networks. Due to unreliable wireless channels and constrained communication resources, the server can only choose a handful of clients for parameter updates during each communication round. To address this issue, analytical expressions are derived to characterize the FL convergence rate, accounting for key features from both communication and algorithmic aspects, including transmission reliability, scheduling policies, and momentum method. First, the analysis reveals that either delicately designed user scheduling policies or expanding higher bandwidth to accommodate more clients in each communication round can expedite model training in networks with reliable connections. However, these methods become ineffective when the connection is erratic. Second, it has been verified that incorporating the momentum method into the model training algorithm accelerates the rate of convergence and provides greater resilience against transmission failures. Last, extensive empirical simulations are provided to verify these theoretical discoveries and enhancements in performance. © 2023 CCBY.

Improved Feed-Forward Control of Active Power Decoupler for PV Microinverter With Non-Sinusoidal Power Decoupling Capability

In single-phase power conversion systems, there is an inherent difference between the dc-side constant and ac-side oscillating power, and power decoupling is required especially in applications like photovoltaic (PV) inverters. Active power decoupling (APD) converters are often used to balance instantaneous power while reducing the size of dc link capacitors and improving the system reliability. Conventionally, APD converters are controlled to decouple only sinusoidal power at double-line frequency. However, the control is further complicated when non-sinusoidal power is delivered due to non-linear circuit components, non-linear loads, or grid distortions. This paper proposes an improved feed-forward APD control scheme with the capability of decoupling non-sinusoidal power, which has application in single-phase systems, particularly all types of PV microinverters. The proposed feed-forward control includes the capacitor voltage calculation under arbitrary power harmonics and a dead-time compensation to increase the accuracy of duty prediction. The proposed algorithm can work as open-loop control to eliminate APD sensors and can serve as a feed-forward term in closed-loop control to improve power decoupling performance, thereby simplifying the controller design. The proposed approach is experimentally verified using a dc-parallel APD prototype, a 50 V 250 W microinverter with non-linear ac capacitor, and a diode rectifier load. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

In recent years, the wood product industry has been facing a skilled labor shortage. The result is more frequent sudden failures, resulting in additional costs for these companies already operating in a very competitive market. Moreover, sawmills are challenging environments for machinery and sensors. Given that experienced machine operators may be able to diagnose defects or malfunctions, one possible way of assisting novice operators is through acoustic monitoring. As a step towards the automation of wood-processing equipment and decision support systems for machine operators, in this paper, we explore using a deep convolutional autoencoder for acoustic anomaly detection of wood planers on a new real-life dataset. Specifically, our convolutional autoencoder with skip connections (Skip-CAE) and our Skip-CAE transformer outperform the DCASE autoencoder baseline, one-class SVM, isolation forest and a published convolutional autoencoder architecture, respectively obtaining an area under the ROC curve of 0.846 and 0.875 on a dataset of real-factory planer sounds. Moreover, we show that adding skip connections and attention mechanism under the form of a transformer encoder-decoder helps to further improve the anomaly detection capabilities. © 2025 IEEE.

The economic dispatch problem (EDP) poses a significant challenge in energy management for modern power systems, particularly as these systems undergo expansion. This growth escalates the demand for communication resources and increases the risk of communication failures. To address this challenge, we propose a distributed algorithm with network-independent step sizes and an event-triggered mechanism, which reduces communication requirements and enhances adaptability. Unlike traditional methods, our algorithm uses network-independent step sizes derived from each agent's local cost functions, thus eliminating the need for detailed network topology knowledge. The theoretical derivation identifies a range of step size values that depend solely on the objective function's strong convexity and the gradient's Lipschitz continuity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is shown to achieve a linear convergence rate, assuming the event triggering threshold criteria are met for linear convergence. Numerical experiments further validate the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed distributed algorithm by demonstrating its ability to maintain good convergence characteristics while reducing communication frequency. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Smart Grid Energy Management (SGEM) denotes the function of optimizing energy flow in the grid while enhancing grid efficiency and stability. One major issue is that increased integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) may add a layer of complexity to EM, which may, in turn, reduce the reliability and stability of the grid. Keeping such challenges in mind, this paper proposes the Osprey Optimization Algorithm (OOA) on its part to enhance SGEM through various facets of load balancing and energy distribution. The objective of this method is to minimize the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), enhancing the precision of energy predictions and optimizing grid performance. The OOA optimizes energy distribution in micro grids, improving efficiency and reducing power losses. The performance of the suggested OOA method is assessed by contrasting it with other optimization approaches that are currently in use, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA), and Multi Objective Wind Driven Optimization (MOWDO). The OOA method is implemented on the MATLAB platform. The outcomes show that the proposed OOA method provides superior performance in minimizing MAPE, achieving the lowest MAPE value of 0.28%, indicating its enhanced accuracy in energy demand forecasting and optimization. © 2025 IEEE.

With the advent of advancements in future sixth-generation (6G) communication systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, characterized by their limited computational and communication capacities, have become integral in our lives. These devices are deployed extensively to gather vast amounts of data in real-time applications. However, their restricted battery life and computational resources present significant challenges in meeting the requirements of advanced communication systems. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has emerged as a promising solution to these challenges within the IoT realm in recent years. Despite its potential, securing MEC infrastructure in the context of IoT remains an open task. This study explores the operational dynamics of a secured IoT-enabled MEC infrastructure, focusing on providing real-time, on-demand, secure computational resources to low-powered IoT devices. It outlines a joint optimization problem to maximize computational throughput, minimize device energy consumption, reduce computational latency, and mitigate security overhead. An optimization algorithm is introduced to address these challenges by jointly allocating resources, thereby optimizing throughput, conserving energy, and meeting latency benchmarks through dynamic system adaptation. The effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm is demonstrated through comparisons with relevant benchmark schemes, highlighting its efficiency in various scenarios. This work showcases the potential of advancements in encryption to deliver scalable security solutions with reduced resource consumption as the number of devices increases. © 2013 IEEE.
