Assessment of myocardial viability is essential in diagnosis and treatment management of patients suffering from myocardial infarction, and classification of pathology on myocardium is the key to this assessment. This work defines a new task of medical image analysis, i.e., to perform myocardial pathology segmentation (MyoPS) combining three-sequence cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images, which was first proposed in the MyoPS challenge, in conjunction with MICCAI 2020. The challenge provided 45 paired and pre-aligned CMR images, allowing algorithms to combine the complementary information from the three CMR sequences for pathology segmentation. In this article, we provide details of the challenge, survey the works from fifteen participants and interpret their methods according to five aspects, i.e., preprocessing, data augmentation, learning strategy, model architecture and post-processing. In addition, we analyze the results with respect to different factors, in order to examine the key obstacles and explore potential of solutions, as well as to provide a benchmark for future research. We conclude that while promising results have been reported, the research is still in the early stage, and more in-depth exploration is needed before a successful application to the clinics. The pursuit-evasion game has been a classic research topic in the field of mobile robotics. Reinforcement learning (RL), which shows outstanding advantages in the decision-making area, is a widely used method in pursuitevasion game. This paper proposes a hierarchical framework in which RL allows the pursuer to select an appropriate strategy for the current condition in the upper level from multiple underlying strategies in the lower level. Through the analysis of existing motion planning algorithms, the dynamic window approach (DWA) and the proportional guidance method (PG) are used as the lower level strategies of the framework. Individual discussions on the merits and limitations of the two motion planning algorithms indicate a possible complementarity between them. Simulations are carried out and the corresponding results validate the excellent performance of the proposed approach.

We introduce the largest abdominal CT dataset (termed AbdomenAtlas) of 20,460 three-dimensional CT volumes sourced from 112 hospitals across diverse populations, geographies, and facilities. AbdomenAtlas provides 673K high-quality masks of anatomical structures in the abdominal region annotated by a team of 10 radiologists with the help of AI algorithms. We start by having expert radiologists manually annotate 22 anatomical structures in 5,246 CT volumes. Following this, a semi-automatic annotation procedure is performed for the remaining CT volumes, where radiologists revise the annotations predicted by AI, and in turn, AI improves its predictions by learning from revised annotations. Such a large-scale, detailed-annotated, and multi-center dataset is needed for two reasons. Firstly, AbdomenAtlas provides important resources for AI development at scale, branded as large pre-trained models, which can alleviate the annotation workload of expert radiologists to transfer to broader clinical applications. Secondly, AbdomenAtlas establishes a large-scale benchmark for evaluating AI algorithms—the more data we use to test the algorithms, the better we can guarantee reliable performance in complex clinical scenarios. An ISBI & MICCAI challenge named BodyMaps: Towards 3D Atlas of Human Body was launched using a subset of our AbdomenAtlas, aiming to stimulate AI innovation and to benchmark segmentation accuracy, inference efficiency, and domain generalizability. We hope our AbdomenAtlas can set the stage for larger-scale clinical trials and offer exceptional opportunities to practitioners in the medical imaging community. All of oral surgeries are accompanied by bleeding. Manual removal of blood is carried out by a nurse and dozens of repetitive blood suction operations are implemented by the nurse during a single oral surgery. In our previous work, a robot for removal of blood-water mixed liquid is designed. However, the robot requires an initial order to autonomous removal of blood mixed liquid. In this paper, a hand gesture control method for typical operations of the robot is developed. Gesture dataset are developed at first and a deep learning neural network is trained for detection of hand gesture. The gesture control procedures for four typical operations are provided in detail. In a group of experiments, it’s demonstrated that an oral surgeon controls the robot’s motion by presenting prescribed hand gesture. The proposed method could be an alternative manner for blood mixed liquid removal.

Learning from natural bacteria flagellum, we demonstrate a magnetic polymer multilayer conical microrobot that bestow the controllable propulsion upon external rotating magnetic field with uniform intensity. The magnetic microrobots were constructed by template-assisted Layer-by-Layer technique technique and subsequent functionalization of magnetic particle onto the big opening of the microrobots. Geometric variables of the polymer microrobots, such as the diameter and wall thickness, can be controlled by selection of porous template and layers of assembly. The microrobots perform controllable propulsion through the manipulation of magnetic field. The comparative analysis of the movement behavior reveals that the deformation of microrobots may attributed to the propulsion upon rotating magnetic field, which is similar as that of natural bacteria. The influence of actuation frequencies and frequencies on the velocity of the microrobots is studied. Such use of polymer polymer multilayer tubular micro/nanoarchitectures results in significant savings in the processing costs and provides a simple and cost-effective fabrication route for the mass production of magnetic polymer microrobots. © 2024, The Authors. Multi-class segmentation of the aorta in computed tomography angiography (CTA) scans is essential for diagnosing and planning complex endovascular treatments for patients with aortic dissections. However, existing methods reduce aortic segmentation to a binary problem, limiting their ability to measure diameters across different branches and zones. Furthermore, no open-source dataset is currently available to support the development of multi-class aortic segmentation methods. To address this gap, we organized the AortaSeg24 MICCAI Challenge, introducing the first dataset of 100 CTA volumes annotated for 23 clinically relevant aortic branches and zones. This dataset was designed to facilitate both model development and validation. The challenge attracted 121 teams worldwide, with participants leveraging state-of-the-art frameworks such as nnU-Net and exploring novel techniques, including cascaded models, data augmentation strategies, and custom loss functions. We evaluated the submitted algorithms using the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) and Normalized Surface Distance (NSD), highlighting the approaches adopted by the top five performing teams. This paper presents the challenge design, dataset details, evaluation metrics, and an in-depth analysis of the top-performing algorithms. The annotated dataset, evaluation code, and implementations of the leading methods are publicly available to support further research. UNDERSTANDING DOMAIN RANDOMIZATION for SIM-TO-REAL TRANSFER

Reinforcement learning encounters many challenges when applied directly in the real world. Sim-to-real transfer is widely used to transfer the knowledge learned from simulation to the real world. Domain randomization-one of the most popular algorithms for sim-to-real transfer-has been demonstrated to be effective in various tasks in robotics and autonomous driving. Despite its empirical successes, theoretical understanding on why this simple algorithm works is limited. In this paper, we propose a theoretical framework for sim-to-real transfers, in which the simulator is modeled as a set of MDPs with tunable parameters (corresponding to unknown physical parameters such as friction). We provide sharp bounds on the sim-to-real gap-the difference between the value of policy returned by domain randomization and the value of an optimal policy for the real world. We prove that sim-to-real transfer can succeed under mild conditionswithout any real-world training samples. Our theory also highlights the importance of using memory (i.e., history-dependent policies) in domain randomization. Our proof is based on novel techniques that reduce the problem of bounding the sim-to-real gap to the problem of designing efficient learning algorithms for infinite-horizon MDPs, which we believe are of independent interest. BrainIB: Interpretable Brain Network-based Psychiatric Diagnosis with Graph Information Bottleneck

Developing a new diagnostic models based on the underlying biological mechanisms rather than subjective symptoms for psychiatric disorders is an emerging consensus. Recently, machine learning-based classifiers using functional connectivity (FC) for psychiatric disorders and healthy controls are developed to identify brain markers. However, existing machine learning-based diagnostic models are prone to over-fitting (due to insufficient training samples) and perform poorly in new test environment. Furthermore, it is difficult to obtain explainable and reliable brain biomarkers elucidating the underlying diagnostic decisions. These issues hinder their possible clinical applications. In this work, we propose BrainIB, a new graph neural network (GNN) framework to analyze functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI), by leveraging the famed Information Bottleneck (IB) principle. BrainIB is able to identify the most informative edges in the brain (i.e., subgraph) and generalizes well to unseen data. We evaluate the performance of BrainIB against 3 baselines and 7 state-of-the-art brain network classification methods on three psychiatric datasets and observe that our BrainIB always achieves the highest diagnosis accuracy. It also discovers the subgraph biomarkers which are consistent to clinical and neuroimaging findings. Anomaly detection refers to identifying the observation that deviates from the normal pattern, which has been an active research area in various domains. Recently, the increasing data scale, complexity, and dimension turns the traditional representation and statistical-based outlier detection method into challenging. In this paper, we leverage the generative model in hyperspectral images anomaly detection. The gist is to model the distribution of the normal data, while the out-of-distribution sample can be viewed as the outlier. At first, the variational inference-based anomaly detection methods are investigated. We theoretically and empirically find that they are unstable due to the strong notion of distance (f-divergence) served as the regularization. Secondly, this paper introduces sliced Wasserstein distance, which is a weaker distribution measure compared with f-divergence. However, the number of randomly slicing poses a difficulty to estimate the true distance. In the end, we propose a projected sliced Wasserstein (PSW) autoencoder-based anomaly screening method. In particular, we leverage a computation-friendly eigen-decomposition method to find the principal component as slicing the high-dimensional data. Furthermore, our proposed distance can be calculated with the closed-form, even the prior distribution is not Gaussian. Comprehensive experiments conducted on various real-world hyperspectral anomaly detection benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed method. © 2021, CC BY.
