Plastic shopping bags that get carried away from the side of roads and tangled on cotton plants can end up at cotton gins if not removed before the harvest. Such bags may not only cause problem in the ginning process but might also get embodied in cotton fibers reducing its quality and marketable value. Therefore, it is required to detect, locate, and remove the bags before cotton is harvested. Manually detecting and locating these bags in cotton fields is labor intensive, time-consuming and a costly process. To solve these challenges, we present application of four variants of YOLOv5 (YOLOv5s, YOLOv5m, YOLOv5l and YOLOv5x) for detecting plastic shopping bags using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)-acquired RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) images. We also show fixed effect model tests of color of plastic bags as well as YOLOv5-variant on average precision (AP), mean average precision (mAP@50) and accuracy. Many real-world image recognition problems, such as diagnostic medical imaging exams, are "long-tailed" – there are a few common findings followed by many more relatively rare conditions. In chest radiography, diagnosis is both a long-tailed and multi-label problem, as patients often present with multiple findings simultaneously. While researchers have begun to study the problem of long-tailed learning in medical image recognition, few have studied the interaction of label imbalance and label co-occurrence posed by long-tailed, multi-label disease classification. To engage with the research community on this emerging topic, we conducted an open challenge, CXR-LT, on long-tailed, multi-label thorax disease classification from chest X-rays (CXRs). We publicly release a large-scale benchmark dataset of over 350,000 CXRs, each labeled with at least one of 26 clinical findings following a long-tailed distribution. We synthesize common themes of top-performing solutions, providing practical recommendations for long-tailed, multi-label medical image classification. Deep learning for UAV-based object detection and tracking: A survey

Owing to effective and flexible data acquisition, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has recently become a hotspot across the fields of computer vision (CV) and remote sensing (RS). Inspired by recent success of deep learning (DL), many advanced object detection and tracking approaches have been widely applied to various UAV-related tasks, such as environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, traffic management. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on the research progress and prospects of DL-based UAV object detection and tracking methods. More specifically, we first outline the challenges, statistics of existing methods, and provide solutions from the perspectives of DL-based models in three research topics: object detection from the image, object detection from the video, and object tracking from the video. Open datasets related to UAV-dominated object detection and tracking are exhausted, and four benchmark datasets are employed for performance evaluation using some state-of-the-art methods. Finally, prospects and considerations for the future work are discussed and summarized. It is expected that this survey can facilitate those researchers who come from remote sensing field with an overview of DL-based UAV object detection and tracking methods, along with some thoughts on their further developments. Two-Dimensional Non-Line-of-Sight Scene Estimation from a Single Edge Occluder

Passive non-line-of-sight imaging methods are often faster and stealthier than their active counterparts, requiring less complex and costly equipment. However, many of these methods exploit motion of an occluder or the hidden scene, or require knowledge or calibration of complicated occluders. The edge of a wall is a known and ubiquitous occluding structure that may be used as an aperture to image the region hidden behind it. Light from around the corner is cast onto the floor forming a fan-like penumbra rather than a sharp shadow. Subtle variations in the penumbra contain a remarkable amount of information about the hidden scene. Previous work has leveraged the vertical nature of the edge to demonstrate 1D (in angle measured around the corner) reconstructions of moving and stationary hidden scenery from as little as a single photograph of the penumbra. In this work, we introduce a second reconstruction dimension: range measured from the edge. We derive a new forward model, accounting for radial falloff, and propose two inversion algorithms to form 2D reconstructions from a single photograph of the penumbra. Performances of both algorithms are demonstrated on experimental data corresponding to several different hidden scene configurations. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical image processing, deep learning in color fundus photography (CFP) analysis is also evolving. Although there are some open-source, labeled datasets of CFPs in the ophthalmology community, large-scale datasets for screening only have labels of disease categories, and datasets with annotations of fundus structures are usually small in size. In addition, labeling standards are not uniform across datasets, and there is no clear information on the acquisition device. Here we release a multi-annotation, multi-quality, and multi-device color fundus image dataset for glaucoma analysis on an original challenge-Retinal Fundus Glaucoma Challenge 2nd Edition (REFUGE2). The REFUGE2 dataset contains 2000 color fundus images with annotations of glaucoma classification, optic disc/cup segmentation, as well as fovea localization. Meanwhile, the REFUGE2 challenge sets three sub-tasks of automatic glaucoma diagnosis and fundus structure analysis and provides an online evaluation framework. Based on the characteristics of multi-device and multi-quality data, some methods with strong generalizations are provided in the challenge to make the predictions more robust. This shows that REFUGE2 brings attention to the characteristics of real-world multi-domain data, bridging the gap between scientific research and clinical application. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Image relighting is attracting increasing interest due to its various applications. From a research perspective, image relighting can be exploited to conduct both image normalization for domain adaptation, and also for data augmentation. It also has multiple direct uses for photo montage and aesthetic enhancement. In this paper, we review the NTIRE 2021 depth guided image relighting challenge. We rely on the VIDIT dataset for each of our two challenge tracks, including depth information. The first track is on one-to-one relighting where the goal is to transform the illumination setup of an input image (color temperature and light source position) to the target illumination setup. In the second track, the any-to-any relighting challenge, the objective is to transform the illumination settings of the input image to match those of another guide image, similar to style transfer. In both tracks, participants were given depth information about the captured scenes. We had nearly 250 registered participants, leading to 18 confirmed team submissions in the final competition stage. The competitions, methods, and final results are presented in this paper. As the aging population grows at a rapid rate, there is an ever growing need for service robot platforms that can provide daily assistance at practical speed with reliable performance. In order to assist with daily tasks such as fetching a beverage, a service robot must be able to perceive its environment and generate corresponding motion trajectories. This becomes a challenging and computationally complex problem when the environment is unknown and thus the path planner must sample numerous trajectories that often are sub-optimal, extending the execution time. To address this issue, we propose a unique strategy of integrating a 3D object detection pipeline with a kinematically optimal manipulation planner to significantly increase speed performance at runtime. In addition, we develop a new robotic butler system for a wheeled humanoid that is capable of fetching requested objects at 24% of the speed a human needs to fulfill the same task. In this paper we present the theoretical considerations and the design evolution of a proof-of-concept reconfigurable metasurface, primarily used as a tunable microwave absorber, but also as a wavefront manipulation and polarization conversion device in reflection. We outline the design evolution and all considerations taken into account, from the selection of patch shape, unit cell size, and substrate, to the topology of the structure that realizes the desired tunability. The presented design conforms to fabrication restrictions and is co-designed to work with an integrated circuit chip for providing tunable complex loads to the metasurface, using a commercially available semiconductor process. The proposed structure can perform multiple tunable functionalities by appropriately biasing the integrated circuit: Perfect absorption for a wide range of incidence angles of both linear polarization states, accommodating a spectral range in the vicinity of 5 GHz, with potential also for wavefront control, exemplified via anomalous reflection and polarization conversion. The end vision is for such a design to be scalable and deployable as a practical HyperSurface, i.e., an intelligent multi-functional metasurface capable of concurrent reconfigurable functionalities: absorption, beam steering, polarization conversion, wavefront shaping, holography, and sensing. A foundational set of findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) principles were proposed in 2016 as prerequisites for proper data management and stewardship, with the goal of enabling the reusability of scholarly data. The principles were also meant to apply to other digital assets, at a high level, and over time, the FAIR guiding principles have been reinterpreted or extended to include the software, tools, algorithms, and workflows that produce data. FAIR principles are now being adapted in the context of AI models and datasets. Here, we present the perspectives, vision, and experiences of researchers from different countries, disciplines, and backgrounds who are leading the definition and adoption of FAIR principles in their communities of practice, and discuss outcomes that may result from pursuing and incentivizing FAIR AI research. computer vision is widely recognized as an influential technology in the precision management of animals. Emerging studies have demonstrated the potential to improve pig health and welfare with intelligent systems using camera surveillance systems and computer vision algorithms. However, the lack of benchmark datasets and robust algorithms restricts the development of robust computer vision models and artificial intelligence applications. In this study, we create a general-purpose dataset (PigLife) that contains video clips and images across most pig production phases in commercial systems: Breeding and Gestation, Farrow to Wean, Weaning & Nursery, and Growth to Finish. The dataset is then used to evaluate performance of up-to-date foundational detection and segmentation algorithms. The first subset of the PigLife dataset has 42 short video clips (5 sec to ~ 2 min) and 22K pig instances with various visual difficulties that covered scenarios of a single pig, multiple pigs (up to 17 pigs), and farrowing sow and resulting offspring. We apply PigLife dataset to develop detection algorithms (Faster RCNN, RetinaNet, TridentNet) and segmentation algorithms (Mask R-CNN, MViTv2, Point-Rend);evaluate pretrained detection models (YOLO8-m, Faster-RCNN-r50,), and assess zero-shot segmentation models (CLIP-SAM and Grouddino-HQSAM). The results indicate a benchmark dataset provided a rich background for evaluating the robustness of algorithms as identified remaining difficulties and challenges with respect to various algorithms. Meanwhile, the significant improvement of performances for robust pretrained algorithms and zero-shot models show a great potential to promote the computer vision technologies for commercial applications in the pig production industry. © 2023, The Authors.
