Advances in a scene matching approach based on objects spatial relationships are discussed. Objects spatial relationships are captured using force histograms, which are used as affine-invariant image descriptors. Object mapping across images is performed by finding the best correspondence map between image descriptors. Due to a very large search space, the particle swarm optimization method is used to facilitate more efficient search. The image descriptors map is then translated into an object map identifying the correspondences between objects in the two images.

The image sequence of a static scene includes similar or redundant information over time. Hence, motion-discontinuous instants can efficiently characterize a video shot or event. However, such instants (key frames) are differently identified according to the change of velocity and acceleration of motion, and such scales of change might be different on each sequence of the same event. In this paper, we present a scalable video abstraction in which the key frames are obtained by the maximum curvature of camera motion at each temporal scale. The scalability means dealing with the velocity and acceleration change of motion. In the temporal neighborhood determined by the scale, the scene features (motion, color, and edge) can be used to index and classify the video events. Therefore, those key frames provide temporal interest points (TIPs) for the abstraction and classification of video events.

This paper presents the development of the modeling strategy of the human driving behavior based on the expression as Piecewise Linear (PWL) model focusing on the driver’s stopping maneuver. The driving data are collected by using the three-dimensional driving simulator based on CAVE, which provides stereoscopic immersive vision. In our modeling, the relationship between the driver’s sensory information and the operation of the driver such as braking amount is expressed by PWL model, which is a class of Hybrid Dynamical System (HDS). The identification problem for the PWL model is formulated as the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) by transforming the switching conditions into binary variables. From the obtained results, it is found that the driver appropriately switches the ‘control low’ according to the sensory information. These results enable us to capture not only the physical meaning of the driving skill, but also the decision-making aspect (switching conditions) in the driver’s stopping maneuver.

Enhancement of stents using interference of low-frequency ultrasonic echo signals

Purpose. We set out to enhance the imaging of stents used for coronary coarctation surgery without imaging the reticulation of the stent. Because the stent is a reticulated structure, there is a relation between ultrasound wavelength and the interstice reticulation that produces the echo. Methods. First we performed computer simulation by ultrasound frequency of transmitted signals to analyze this relation. Then, instead of controlling the transmitted wave, we processed the returned signals through a band-pass filter because of the difficulty of controlling the transmitted waves of diagnostic ultrasound equipment. Following this, we conducted experiments on an agar gel phantom containing a stent to verify the effectiveness of this method. Results. The simulation confirmed that the stent was apparent when the ultrasonic wavelength equaled the product of an integer and twice the interval of the reticulation of the stent. Application of a band-pass filter of 0.8 to 1.5MHz to the waveform returned from the agar gel phantom containing the stent. Conclusions. The effectiveness of this method in depicting the stent was confirmed. © The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine 2004.

Mobile robots in real-life settings would benefit from being able to localize sound sources. Such a capability can nicely complement vision to help localize a person or an interesting event in the environment, and also to provide enhanced processing for other capabilities such as speech recognition. We present a robust sound source localization method in three-dimensional space using an array of 8 microphones. The method is based on a frequency-domain implementation of a steered beamformer along with a probabilistic post-processor. Results show that a mobile robot can localize in real time multiple moving sources of different types over a range of 5 meters with a response time of 200 ms.

In this research it is claimed that engineering education increases the positivistic tendencies of students regarding to the social problems. A theoretical background is given in the introduction and literature review. Two hypotheses are constructed and a micro-questionnaire survey is performed to test the hypotheses. In the survey positivistic tendencies of engineering students and social science students are compared. The results are depicted and discussed in detail. One of the hypotheses was approved by the results while the other was rejected. It is concluded that the rejected hypothesis was not in accordance with the claim since it overlooked some factors effecting positivism. The results of the survey support the claim by stating that 'engineering students are more positivist than social science students'. This paper deals with the development of novel sensory systems and interfaces to enhance the safety of a driver who may be using a cell phone. It describes a system for real time affect analysis and Tele-viewing in order to bring the context of the driver to remote users. The system is divided into two modules. The affect recognition module recognizes six emotional states of the driver. The face-modeling module generates a 3D model of the driver's face using two images and synthesizes the emotions on it. Depending on bandwidth, either a raw video, 3D warped model, or an iconic representation is sent to the remote user.

From 1990 to April 2002, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), airbag deployment has been responsible for 208 deaths in low-severity crashes. Of these deaths, 107 were children between the ages of 1 and 11, 22 were infants, and 32 were women under the height of five feet two inches. In addition to deaths, airbags are responsible for many more incidental injuries and broken bones. These injuries could be avoided if the system had an accurate model of the actual pose of the occupant. This paper discusses a system we are developing to accurately determine the position of the head, torso, and arms of the front-seat occupant of a vehicle.

Our research is focused on the development of novel machine vision based telematic systems, which provide non-intrusive probing of the state of the driver and driving conditions. In this paper we present a system which allows simultaneous capture of the driver's head pose, driving view, and surroundings of the vehicle. The integrated machine vision system utilizes a video stream of full 360 degree panoramic field of view. The processing modules include perspective transformation, feature extraction, head detection, head pose estimation, driving view synthesis, and motion segmentation. The paper presents a multi-state statistical decision models with Kalman filtering based tracking for head pose detection and face orientation estimation. The basic feasibility and robustness of the approach is demonstrated with a series of systematic experimental studies.
