Automatic pain assessment plays a critical role for advancing healthcare and optimizing pain management strategies. This study has been submitted to the First Multimodal Sensing Grand Challenge for Next-Gen Pain Assessment (AI4PAIN). The proposed multimodal framework utilizes facial videos and fNIRS and presents a modality-agnostic approach, alleviating the need for domain-specific models. Employing a dual ViT configuration and adopting waveform representations for the fNIRS, as well as for the extracted embeddings from the two modalities, demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method, achieving an accuracy of 46.76% in the multilevel pain assessment task.

In this study, we investigate a novel "dimerized" dielectric metasurface featuring dual-mode resonances governed by symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs). The metasurface design offers advantages such as insensitivity to incident light polarization and exceptionally high quality factors exceeding 105 for low and moderate structural deviations from the monoatomic array. By introducing mastered perturbations in the metasurface via the Brillouin zone folding method, without reducing symmetry, we explore the behavior of symmetry-protected BIC states and their polarization-independent responses. Through numerical simulations and analysis, we demonstrate the superiority of Q factors for specific BIC-based resonances, leading to precise control over interaction behaviors and light engineering in both near and far fields. Our findings contribute to the understanding of BIC resonance interactions and offer insights into the design of high-performance sensing applications and meta-devices with enhanced functionalities. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Metamaterial-induced-transparency engineering through quasi-bound states in the continuum by using dielectric cross-shaped trimers

This study presents a novel approach to activate a narrowband transparency line within a reflecting broadband window in all-dielectric metasurfaces, in analogy to the electromagnetically-induced transparency effect, by means of a quasi-bound state in the continuum (qBIC). We demonstrate that the resonance overlapping of a bright mode and a qBIC-based nearly-dark mode with distinct Q-factor can be fully governed by a silicon trimer-based unit cell with broken-inversion-symmetry cross shape, thus providing the required response under normal incidence of a linearly-polarized light. Our analysis that is derived from the far-field multipolar decomposition and near-field electromagnetic distributions uncovers the main contributions of different multipoles on the qBIC resonance, with governing magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole terms supplied by distinct parts of the dielectric "molecule." The findings extracted from this research open up new avenues for the development of polarization-dependent technologies, with particular interest in its capabilities for sensing and biosensing. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Continuous subgraph matching (CSM) is a critical task for analyzing dynamic graphs and has a wide range of applications, such as merchant fraud detection, cyber-attack hunting, and rumor detection. Although many efficient CSM algorithms have been recently proposed, they are mainly designed to process a single query. However, in some application scenarios, multi-query oriented continuous subgraph matching (MQCSM) may be of more interest. To our knowledge, the two existing solutions to MQCSM are outdated due to unsatisfactory performance. In this paper, we propose MQ-Match, an efficient approach to MQCSM. First, we design a compact yet effective index structure CCG, which maintains the local matching result of vertices in the data graph using a directed graph. The directed edges in CCG can be utilized as an effective pruning rule for the subsequent incremental matching algorithm when expanding a partial match. Then, we develop a computation sharing incremental matching algorithm. In specific, a set of matching trees is constructed based on the depth-first search trees of the query graphs. By utilizing CCG, we conduct subgraph matching for the matching tree to collect the incremental matches for the query graphs, where the common structures of query graphs are matched only once. Extensive experiments show that MQ-Match can achieve 3.1x-7071.4x speedup over the competitors, and consumes much less memory under the majority of the experiment settings. © 2024 IEEE.

Visual relocalization is a fundamental problem in computer vision and robotics. Recently, regression-based methods become popular and they can be categorized into two classes: absolute pose regression and scene coordinate regression. In this work, we present a combined regression network that jointly learns scene coordinate regression and absolute pose regression for single-image visual relocalization. The proposed network composes of a feature encoder and two regression branches with uncertainty modeling. In particular, we design a deep feature conditioning module, aiming at propagating the coarse pose information in absolute pose regression to inform the predictions in scene coordinate regression. The proposed network is trained in an end-to-end fashion to learn both regression tasks. Moreover, we propose an uncertainty-driven RANSAC algorithm that incorporates the predicted scene coordinates and their uncertainties to solve the camera pose during inference. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to combine scene coordinate regression and pose regression in a hierarchical framework for visual relocalization. Experiments on indoor and outdoor benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art methods.

This study focuses on the estimation of floating ice distribution on the sea surface from aerial imagery at tidewater glaciers. The presence of ice-mélange in the glacial bay affects ice-loss at the glacier terminus via buttressing of the glacier face, insulation from ocean heat and breaking of oceanic currents. Thus, estimation of its formation, evolution, distribution and dissipation will aid an understanding of climate-change mechanisms at glacial bays. Given the challenges stemming from lack of data and labeled training samples, we employ a pre-trained vision model with zero-shot performance, the Segment Anything Model (SAM). SAM is fine-tuned to perform automatic estimation of floating-ice distribution on a dataset of images collected in Svalbard at various locations and through various modalities, by segmenting the images into floating ice and ocean surface not covered by ice. The Low-rank adaptation technique is employed on the image encoder structure to reduce the training data and hardware resources needed for model fine-tuning. This approach opens new avenues for real-time analysis of glacial dynamics and their implications on global climate patterns.

Digital twins have a major potential to form a significant part of urban management in emergency planning, as they allow more efficient designing of the escape routes, better orientation in exceptional situations, and faster rescue intervention. Nevertheless, creating the twins still remains a largely manual effort, due to a lack of 3D-representations, which are available only in limited amounts for some new buildings. Thus, in this paper we aim to synthesize 3D information from commonly available 2D architectural floor plans. We propose two novel pixel-wise segmentation methods based on the MDA-Unet and MACU-Net architectures with improved skip connections, an attention mechanism, and a training objective together with a reconstruction part of the pipeline, which vectorizes the segmented plans to create a 3D model. The proposed methods are compared with two other state-of-the-art techniques and several benchmark datasets. On the commonly used CubiCasa benchmark dataset, our methods have achieved the mean F1 score of 0.86 over five examined classes, outperforming the other pixel-wise approaches tested. Fruit harvesting poses a significant labor and financial burden on the fruit industry, which underscore the urgent need for advancements in robotic harvesting solutions. Despite considerable progress in leveraging deep learning and machine learning techniques for fruit detection, a common shortfall is the inability to swiftly extend the developed models across different orchards and/or various fruit species. Additionally, the limited availability of pertinent data further compounds these challenges. In this work, we introduce MetaFruit, the largest publicly available multi-class fruit dataset, comprising 4,248 images and 248,015 manually labeled instances across diverse U.S. orchards. Furthermore, this study proposes an innovative open-set fruit detection system leveraging advanced vision Foundation Models (VFMs) for fruit detection that can adeptly identify a wide array of fruit types under varying orchard conditions. This system not only demonstrates remarkable adaptability in learning from minimal data through few-shot learning but also shows the ability to interpret human instructions for subtle detection tasks. The performance of the developed foundation model is comprehensively evaluated across several metrics, outperforming existing state-of-the-art algorithms in our MetaFruit, thereby setting a new benchmark in the field of agricultural technology and robotic harvesting. The MetaFruit dataset (https://***/datasets/jiajiali/metafruit) and detection framework (https://***/JiajiaLi04/FMFruit) are open-sourced to foster future research in vision-based fruit harvesting, marking a significant stride toward addressing the urgent needs of the agricultural sector. © 2024 ASABE Annual International Meeting. While the a-wave of mouse electroretinogram (ERG) occurs within 50 milliseconds after exposure to light, the optoretinogram (ORG) slower than a 20Hz sampling rate could face limitations in observing immediate morphological changes from the retina. In this study, we develop a compact custom-built mouse ORG system based on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) for 100Hz~1KHz B-scan rates comprised of 100 kHz A-scans. All the optics of the developed ORG system are designed on a 24 x 24 inches optical breadboard to move easily as well as to combine with the ERG system in a dark room. Without using a fundus camera, the OCT system provides en-face images from high-pass filtering and square of the OCT spectral signal for mouse retinal positioning in-vivo before acquiring ORG data. The 490nm LED for light stimulus is generated to make uniform illumination at the mouse retina using the Maxwellian view method. The common path of the OCT scanning light and the visible LED is built with achromatic doublet lens combinations based on optical simulation with Opticstudio® . The developed compact ORG system can not only observe light-evoked responses with 1~10 milliseconds but also be used for the studies of correlations between ORG and ERG in the mouse retina. © 2024 SPIE.
