Microgrids equipped with hybrid energy storage systems (ESSs) are increasingly critical for balancing the intermittency of renewable energy sources and the fluctuations in demand. This article introduces a novel multiagent imitation learning (MAIL) framework for real-time energy management in microgrids, particularly under real-time pricing conditions. The approach leverages a problem decomposition strategy, which separates the energy management task into two phases: first, optimal actions for each ESS are estimated using individual agents, each employing a deep neural network trained to emulate an ideal mixed-integer linear programming solver;then, a one-step online optimization reacts to these decisions to optimize the remaining system components holistically. Rigorous proofs establish the equivalence of the decomposed subproblems to the original optimization problem, ensuring integrity and effectiveness. Comparative simulation studies with real-world data reveal that our MAIL framework offers significant cost advantages and superior training efficiency relative to both traditional single and emerging multiagent reinforcement learning methods. Notably, the operational costs achieved through our approach are markedly lower than those of its counterparts, closely approximating the theoretical minimum. This underscores the method’s proficiency and its potential as an effective solution for microgrid energy management. Moreover, the MAIL strategy’s multiagent design allows for straightforward scalability to more extensive systems involving multiple ESSs and shows promising potential for cooperative management across interconnected microgrids. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper proposes a method that uses satellite data to improve adaptive sampling missions. We find and track algal bloom fronts using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) equipped with a sensor that measures the concentration of chlorophyll a. Chlorophyll a concentration indicates the presence of algal blooms. The proposed method learns the kernel parameters of a Gaussian process model using satellite images of chlorophyll a from previous days. The AUV estimates the chlorophyll a concentration online using locally collected data. The algal bloom front estimate is fed to the motion control algorithm. The performance of this method is evaluated through simulations using a real dataset of an algal bloom front in the Baltic. We consider a real-world scenario with sensor and localization noise and with a detailed AUV model. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a dual-beam photothermal self-mixing substance trace detection system is proposed. The crystal violet (CV) solution of the sample undergoes a thermal lens effect under the action of pump photoperiod excitation, and the refractive index changes cause the deviation of the probe beam, and the self-mixing interference (SMI) effect occurs when the modulated light returns to the cavity. By combining theoretical and experimental results, the power fluctuation of the SMI signal caused by the thermo-optic effect is linearly related to CV concentration and other parameters. At an excitation power of 24 mW, the detection limit can reach 8.0 × 10−8 mol/L. This method does not require labeling or complex CV pretreatment and has high sensitivity and flexibility, providing a guide for CV characterization in biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical research. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group.

This paper studies community detection for a nonlinear opinion dynamics model from its equilibria. It is assumed that the underlying network is generated from a stochastic block model with two communities, where agents are assigned with community labels and edges are added independently based on these labels. Agents update their opinions following a nonlinear rule that incorporates saturation effects on interactions. It is shown that clustering based on a single equilibrium can detect most community labels (i.e., achieving almost exact recovery), if the two communities differ in size and link probabilities. When the two communities are identical in size and link probabilities, and the intercommunity connections are denser than intra-community ones, the algorithm can achieve almost exact recovery under negative influence weights but fails under positive influence weights. Utilizing fixed point equations and spectral methods, we also propose a detection algorithm based on multiple equilibria, which can detect communities with positive influence weights. Numerical experiments demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

The method [K]control of Adaptive Multiple-timescale systems (KAMS) has been used as a method of adaptive control for systems with states that evolve at vastly different rates and with uncertain parameters. Prior research on KAMS has shown a relationship between the asymptotic behavior of the reference models and the behavior of the full-order closed-loop system. Poor reference model design can cause steady-state error or instability even if that reference model is acceptable in a single timescale context, due to adverse feedback between the reference models and the fast-state manifold. This paper simplifies KAMS control design and provides insight into multiple timescale reference models by identifying design considerations for the fast and slow reference models. For fast reference models, it is shown that the stability proofs used in KAMS control design necessarily require the manifold to be an asymptotically stable equilibrium of the fast reference model, despite prior work that allowed other possibilities. In the case of a slow reference model that is not asymptotically stable to its reference signal, it is common for the inner connection conditions to be dependent on the reference signal. This can cause the interconnection conditions to be ill-formatted for the application of the stability proofs used in KAMS control design. This paper addresses that case and proposes the use of Raffoul’s condition as a method to prove stability in the sense of Lyapunov. A linear quadrotor attitude stabilization problem is used as a framework for the slow reference model analysis. Results presented in the paper show that 1) the asymptotic stability of the fast reference model is a necessary condition for the KAMS stability proofs used in prior work and 2) Raffoul’s condition is a sufficient condition for Lyapunov sense stability even when the inner connection conditions are ill-formatted for the KAMS stability proofs used in prior work. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics

Much of the industrialized world contains significant motor loads which can greatly increase the reactive power demand of any power system. Which increases the overall demand as well. This forces power utility companies to produce more energy to meet this demand than if the system were running more efficiently. Measuring reactive power with typical utility meters and directly billing for reactive power is difficult and ambiguous. Moreover, having to produce and supply reactive power is costly and inefficient for the utility company. As such, each utility has their own internal or region-wide rules/tariffs for recouping this cost from their customers. Looking at the United States, given the many different state laws and utility companies, it is not feasible to have a standard method for billing customers for their reactive power consumption. Therefore, it is left to state legislature and the policies of the power utility companies. In addition to this lack of standard, the lack of understanding surrounding power factor leaves many customers, who own/operate industrial plants with large motor loads, confused and with rather expensive monthly electric bills. This paper intends to investigate the general billing of power and energy from a utility, and especially the many ways to bill reactive power. This study also features an analysis and comparison of how the United States' top five power utility companies define and charge industrial plants for reactive power. © 2023 IEEE.

Equilibrium-Independent control of Continuous-Time Nonlinear systems Via the LPV Framework

In this paper, we consider the analysis and control of continuous-time nonlinear systems to ensure universal shifted stability and performance, i.e., stability and performance w.r.t. each forced equilibrium point of the system. This "equilibrium-free"concept is especially beneficial for control problems that require the tracking of setpoints and rejection of persistent disturbances, such as input loads. In this paper, we show how the velocity form, i.e., the time-differentiated dynamics of the system, plays a crucial role in characterizing these properties and how the analysis of it can be solved by the application of Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) methods in a computationally efficient manner. Furthermore, by leveraging the properties of the velocity form and the LPV framework, a novel controller synthesis method is presented which ensures closed-loop universal shifted stability and performance. The proposed controller design is verified experimentally on a real system. Additionally, we compare the proposed method to a standard LPV control design, demonstrating the improved stability and performance guarantees of the new approach. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
