Grapevine is one of the most important crops cultivated across Europe. Climate factors and diseases constantly threaten its production. Recently, Flavescence dorée (FD), an incurable grapevine disease with the obligation to uproot each infected plant, has been widely spread in Europe. The symptoms of FD are visually expressed in the late summer. Currently, the adopted procedure consists in scouting for infected plants by trained experts, which is time-consuming and not frequent enough. As stress development causes subtle spectral changes before any visible symptoms appear, during the summer of 2022, hyperspectral and multispectral images were acquired in the two vineyards near Riva del Garda, Trentino, Italy. A classification accuracy between 90.2 % and 96.9 % in distinguishing between infected and healthy plants was obtained from the hyperspectral data. These findings justify further efforts to use an in-house developed, affordable multispectral camera, significantly reducing equipment cost and procedure complexity while mapping the relevant spectral channels. © 2023 IEEE.

Measuring Hemoglobin (Hb) levels is required for the assessment of different health conditions, such as anemia, a condition where there are insufficient healthy red blood cells to carry enough oxygen to the body’s tissues. Measuring Hb levels requires the extraction of a blood sample, which is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. This is an invasive procedure that may add challenges to the continuous monitoring of Hb levels. Noninvasive techniques, including imaging and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals combined with machine learning techniques, are being investigated for continuous measurements of Hb. However, the availability of real data to train the algorithms is limited to establishing a generalization and implementation of such techniques in healthcare settings. In this work, we present a computational model based on Monte Carlo simulations that can generate multispectral PPG signals that cover a broad range of Hb levels. These signals are then used to train a Deep Learning (DL) model to estimate hemoglobin levels. Through this approach, valuable insights about the relationships between PPG signals, oxygen saturation, and Hb levels are learned by the DL model. The signals were generated by propagating a source in a volume that contains the skin tissue properties and the target physiological parameters. The source consisted of plane waves using the 660nm and 890 nm wavelengths. A range of 6 g/dL to 18dL Hb values was used to generate 468 PPGs to train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The initial results show high accuracy in detecting low levels of Hb. To the best of our knowledge, the complexity of biological interactions involved in measuring hemoglobin levels has yet to be fully modeled. The presented model offers an alternative approach to studying the effects of changes in Hb levels on the PPGs signal morphology and its interaction with other physiological parameters that are present in the optical path of the measured signals. © 2023 SPIE.

Sensor Networks (SNs) provide new opportunities to improve our monitoring of environmental sustainability. In addition, they were compatible with remote sensing techniques which can process several aspects of environmental sustainability effects. Recently, researchers over the world try to cover most goals of environmental sustainability such as climate change effects, pollution, disasters, health care, etc. This research gives an overview of the scientific works that have been done in this field to further direction plans for the scientists who are interested in this field. This paper introduces a novel approach integrating Differential Evolution (DE) with multi-objective optimization techniques for enhancing Type-1 Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy rule-based systems to attain both fair predictive performance and enhanced interpretability within the context of explainable artificial intelligence. The developed approach encodes the whole knowledge base into one chromosome and endeavors to concurrently optimize the prediction accuracy, the number of rules, and the selection of relevant input features. The methodology was tested on Earth observation data for the estimation of soil health parameters via infrared spectroscopy, and more concretely i) on the 2015 LUCAS topsoil dataset to predict three key soil properties (namely, soil organic carbon, clay content, and pH) from laboratory spectra, and ii) on a set of PRISMA hyperspectral images to predict soil organic carbon in a region of northern Greece. Compared to the classical Random Forest (RF) algorithm, our proposed learning algorithm attains a fair balance between accuracy and interpretability, and is statistically equivalent to RF in terms of accuracy. The findings underscore the potential of the proposed methodology in refining TSK models and its applicability in Earth observation-driven predictions, paving the way for both enhanced modeling accuracy and sparse feature selection. © 2024 IEEE.

Optical-flow-based and kernel-based approaches have been extensively explored for temporal compensation in satellite Video Super-Resolution (VSR). However, these techniques are less generalized in large-scale or complex scenarios, especially in satellite videos. In this paper, we propose to exploit the well-defined temporal difference for efficient and effective temporal compensation. To fully utilize the local and global temporal information within frames, we systematically modeled the short-term and long-term temporal discrepancies since we observe that these discrepancies offer distinct and mutually complementary properties. Specifically, we devise a Short-term Temporal Difference Module (S-TDM) to extract local motion representations from RGB difference maps between adjacent frames, which yields more clues for accurate texture representation. To explore the global dependency in the entire frame sequence, a Long-term Temporal Difference Module (L-TDM) is proposed, where the differences between forward and backward segments are incorporated and activated to guide the modulation of the temporal feature, leading to a holistic global compensation. Moreover, we further propose a Difference Compensation Unit (DCU) to enrich the interaction between the spatial distribution of the target frame and temporal compensated results, which helps maintain spatial consistency while refining the features to avoid misalignment. Rigorous objective and subjective evaluations conducted across five mainstream video satellites demonstrate that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-art approaches. TTST: A Top-k Token Selective Transformer for remote sensing image Super-Resolution

Transformer-based method has demonstrated promising performance in image super-resolution tasks, due to its long-range and global aggregation capability. However, the existing Transformer brings two critical challenges for applying it in large-area earth observation scenes: (1) redundant token representation due to most irrelevant tokens;(2) single-scale representation which ignores scale correlation modeling of similar ground observation targets. To this end, this paper proposes to adaptively eliminate the interference of irreverent tokens for a more compact self-attention calculation. Specifically, we devise a Residual Token Selective Group (RTSG) to grasp the most crucial token by dynamically selecting the top-k keys in terms of score ranking for each query. For better feature aggregation, a Multi-scale Feed-forward Layer (MFL) is developed to generate an enriched representation of multi-scale feature mixtures during feed-forward process. Moreover, we also proposed a Global Context Attention (GCA) to fully explore the most informative components, thus introducing more inductive bias to the RTSG for an accurate reconstruction. In particular, multiple cascaded RTSGs form our final Top-k Token Selective Transformer (TTST) to achieve progressive representation. Extensive experiments on simulated and real-world remote sensing datasets demonstrate our TTST could perform favorably against state-of-the-art CNN-based and Transformer-based methods, both qualitatively and quantitatively. In brief, TTST outperforms the state-of-the-art approach (HAT-L) in terms of PSNR by 0.14 dB on average, but only accounts for 47.26% and 46.97% of its computational cost and parameters. Learning Probabilistic Coordinate Fields for Robust Correspondences

We introduce Probabilistic Coordinate Fields (PCFs), a novel geometric-invariant coordinate representation for image correspondence problems. In contrast to standard Cartesian coordinates, PCFs encode coordinates in correspondence-specific barycentric coordinate systems (BCS) with affine invariance. To know when and where to trust the encoded coordinates, we implement PCFs in a probabilistic network termed PCF-Net, which parameterizes the distribution of coordinate fields as Gaussian mixture models. By jointly optimizing coordinate fields and their confidence conditioned on dense flows, PCF-Net can work with various feature descriptors when quantifying the reliability of PCFs by confidence maps. An interesting observation of this work is that the learned confidence map converges to geometrically coherent and semantically consistent regions, which facilitates robust coordinate representation. By delivering the confident coordinates to keypoint/feature descriptors, we show that PCF-Net can be used as a plug-in to existing correspondence-dependent approaches. Extensive experiments on both indoor and outdoor datasets suggest that accurate geometric invariant coordinates help to achieve the state of the art in several correspondence problems, such as sparse feature matching, dense image registration, camera pose estimation, and consistency filtering. Further, the interpretable confidence map predicted by PCF-Net can also be leveraged to other novel applications from texture transfer to multi-homography classification. © 1979-2012 IEEE.

The pansharpening of high-resolution panchromatic (Pan) image and low-resolution multispectral (MS) images represents an important task in the remote sensing field. It allows the joint exploitation of the information derived from both types of images. However, this may cause a distortion of spectral information or a lack in details and structures. The multiresolution analysis using wavelet transforms has proved its efficiency in the pansharpening domain, due to the representation of the image content over different resolution levels. In image fusion applications, we always need more detail information to be incorporated in the pansharpening procedure in order to produce enhanced results. However, the limitation of the wavelet transform to three types of oriented detail coefficients prevents this need from being met. To overcome this limitation, we propose to use the redundant contourlet transform (RCT) which extracts a richer multiscale directional information from the image. For this purpose, two RCT-based pansharpening methods are introduced and suitable data fusion procedures are described. We conducted several experiments on two different datasets acquired respectively by ALSAT-2A and IKONOS satellites. The visual results as well as quantitative results from evaluation metrics demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Agriculture is under constant pressure to increase the production rate and to provide more food or resources for other industries. Without precision agriculture it is not possible to fulfil these requirements. Medium and large-size farms already adopted this technology, but small farms are far from precision agriculture due to the high initial costs. In this paper we present a bespoke and affordable multispectral camera for precision farming and illustrate its application in the detection of Flavescence dorée. This is a grapevine disease that makes a great concern to grapevine producers in the whole Mediterranean region. Flavescence dorée is the only quarantine disease in the European region. The related mandatory control procedures include uprooting every infected plant, with the obligation to uproot the vineyard when the infection exceed the 20% of threshold infection, hence resulting in a high economical loss. Thus, it is highly important to detect even a single infected plant over an entire vineyard plot, preventing the spreading of Flavescence dorée at earliest stages. We used the in-house developed multispectral camera together with a hyperspectral camera to acquire data from two vineyards near Riva del Garda, Trentino, Italy, during the summer of 2022. These data are the starting point for selecting the optimal spectral bands for the detection of Flavescence dorée using affordable multispectral approaches and developing an appropriate classification algorithm. © 2022 IEEE.
