This paper presents concepts and some experiment on UAV automatic landing on any flat area without prior knowledge of (detachable) markers' positions. The process consists of two key notions. First, the UAV approximates 3D positions of four color markers using a single camera stereoscopic scheme. In other words, the aircraft flies and captures images of ground to create depth map of the four markers. Second, it relies on a pose estimation algorithm (here, Homography) to approximate rotational and, especially, translational information between air to ground. What is novel in this concept is z-coordinate of markers on ground can always be normalized based on our kinematic chain. Thus, homography can be used. Additionally, depth estimation using stereo vision with a camera is shown in experimental result. Furthermore, the whole process is also possible without GPS data, which might post problem in some certain situations, e.g. inadequate positioning accuracy for small landing area, or unreliability during warfare.

In this paper, the authors exploit a multispectral image representation to perform more accurate document image binarisation compared to previous color representations. In the first stage, image fusion is employed to create a 'document' and a 'background' image. In the second stage, the FastICA algorithm is used to perform background subtraction. In the third stage, a spatial kernel K-harmonic means classifier binarizes the FastICA output. The proposed system outperforms previous efforts on document image binarization. © 2014 IEEE.

Automatic target generation process (ATGP) has been found very useful and effective for unsupervised target detection. It performs a sequence of orthogonal subspace projection to extract potential targets of interest. One major issue arises in ATGP is how to terminate the algorithm in the sense that how many targets are required for ATGP to generate before it is terminated. This paper presents a recursive version of ATGP, referred to as recursive ATGP (RATGP) which has two advantages. One is no need of inverting any matrix as ATGP does for finding each target. Most importantly, a stopping rule can be derived for ATGP via RATGP is also developed using the Neyman-Pearosn detection theory to determine how many targets needed to be generated by RATGP before it is terminated.

This paper addresses the problem of circuit design and global exponential stabilization of memristive neural networks with time-varying delays and general activation functions. Based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method and free weighting matrix technique, a delay-dependent criteria for the global exponential stability and stabilization of memristive neural networks are derived in form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Two numerical examples are elaborated to illustrate the characteristics of the results. It is noteworthy that the traditional assumptions on the boundness of the derivative of the time-varying delays are removed.

Accurate modeling of human teeth is mandatory for many reasons. Some of them are (1) Providing comfort to patients during mold process, and (2) Enhancing the accuracy level for oral orthodontist and dental care personnel. Shape from Shading (SFS) proved to be of great help in this problem, considering the fact that human tooth surface is textureless. In this paper, we address the problem of 3D tooth reconstruction, and improve the current algorithms. The approached developed in this paper reconstructs the teeth from single image shading with 2D-PCA shape priors that have more sophisticated reflectance model. Oren-Nayar-Wolff model was used for modeling the surface reflectance. This formulation uses shape priors as got from a set of training CT scans of real human teeth. Our experiments show promising quantitative results, which builds the infrastructure for having an optical based approach that accounts for inexpensive and radiationless human tooth reconstruction. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Under the indoor building environment, when the fires and other accidents occur, how to effectively organize the masses evacuation and fire rescue, is closely related to the safety of people's lives and property and has become a critical problem of public concern. This paper presents an improved ant colony algorithm (ACO) to solve the problem of how to optimize the evacuation route and rescue route when an accident occurs. According to the key factors affecting people emergency evacuation, such as indoor building environment, fire and its combustion products, problem of path's optimal selection, etc., we propose an emergency evacuation model, based on the model it can give an optimal evacuation route for the mass and an optimal rescue route for the firefighters. We also analyzes the search results, it shows that the search results is robust and reasonable.

In China, drought is one of the major environmental disasters, which bring great harm to the people. The middle reach of Yangtze River is the most important base to produce grains in China. Influenced by the summer monsoon, the drought occurs frequently. In our paper, the NDVI and LST from MODIS data were utilized to calculate the TVDI (Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index), which were used to monitor the drought of the study area. Meteorological drought indices were calculated from 10-day precipitation, temperature and evaporation data of 94 meteorological stations, including precipitation standardized variables, dryness and relative moisture index were used to analyze the degree of drought and the area of drought. The results showed that TVDI is significantly related to soil moisture.

The 2014 Data Fusion Contest, organized by the image Analysis and Data Fusion (IADF) Technical Committee of the IEEE Geoscience and remote sensing Societ y , involved two datasets acquired at different spectral ranges and spatial resolutions: a coarser-resolution long-wave infrared (LWIR, thermal infrared) hyperspectral data set and fine-resolution data acquired in the visible (VIS) wavelength range. In this article, a novel multi-level fusion approach is proposed to fully utilize the characteristics of these two different datasets to achieve improved urban land-use and land-cover classification. Specificall y , road extraction by fusing the classification result of the TI-HSI dataset and the segmentation result of the VIS dataset is first proposed. Thereafter, a novel gap inpainting method for the VIS data with the guidance of the TI-HSI data is presented to deal with the swath width inconsistency, and to facilitate an accurate spatial feature extraction step. The experimental results with the 2014 Data Fusion Contest datasets suggest that the proposed method can alleviate the multi-spectral-spatial resolution and multi-swath width problem to a great extent, and achieve an improved urban classification accuracy.

Evolutionary membrane computing is an important research direction of membrane computing that aims to explore the complex interactions between membrane computing and evolutionary computation. These disciplines are receiving increasing attention. In this paper, an overview of the evolutionary membrane computing state-of-the-art and new results on two established topics in well defined scopes (membrane-inspired evolutionary algorithms and automated design of membrane computing models) are presented. We survey their theoretical developments and applications, sketch the differences between them, and compare the advantages and limitations. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
