In recent decades, atmospheric scientists have been interested in measuring thermodynamic variables such as tropospheric water vapor and temperature with increasing temporal and spatial resolution due to their importance on the climate modeling. For this purpose, microwave radiometers have been used to measure columnar integrated water vapor. The radiative transfer equation (RTE) has been used to retrieve the contributions of individual atmospheric layers, assuming a stratified atmosphere. In recent years, significant advances have been made toward retrieval of these parameters in 2-D, 3-D and 4-D (3-D + time) distributions. This work presents a new radiometric concept to directly measure the contribution of each pixel (avoiding the use of the RTE inversion) by using pencil-beam antennas and interferometric techniques. This new approach has the potential to improve the quality of the retrieved thermodynamic variables to meet the research goals of atmospheric science.

In order to successfully locate and retrieve document images such as technical articles and newspapers, a text localization technique must be employed. The proposed method detects and extracts homogeneous text areas in document images indifferent to font types and size by using connected components analysis to detect blocks of foreground objects. Next, a descriptor that consists of a set of structural features is extracted from the merged blocks and used as input to a trained Support Vector Machines (SVM). The Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) mission aims to gather high-resolution global soil moisture and freeze/thaw state data, which should enable improvements to weather and climate forecasts, flood prediction and drought monitoring, and estimations of net carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) uptake in forested regions. Targeted for launch in 2014, SMAP is one of four missions recommended by the U.S. National Research Council Committee on Earth Science and Applications From Space for launch in the early part of the next decade ( Earth Science and Applications From Space: National Imperatives for the Next Decade and Beyond , Natl. Acad. Press, 2007). The SMAP mission concept utilizes an L-band (1.20–1.41 gigahertz) radar and a radiometer that share a rotating 6-meter mesh reflector antenna to provide high-resolution and high-accuracy global maps of soil moisture and freeze/thaw state every 2–3 days.

The aim of this study is to assess the functional connectivity from resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Spectral clustering algorithm was applied to the realistic and real fMRI data acquired from a resting healthy subject to find functionally connected brain regions. In order to make computation of the spectral decompositions of the entire brain volume feasible, the similarity matrix has been sparsified with the t-nearestneighbor approach. Realistic data were created to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm and comparing it to the recently proposed spectral clustering algorithm with the Nystrom approximation and also with some well-known algorithms such as the Cross Correlation Analysis (CCA) and the spatial Independent Component Analysis (sICA). To enhance the performance of the methods, a variety of data pre and post processing steps, including data normalization, outlier removal, dimensionality reduction by using wavelet coefficients, estimation of number of clusters and optimal number of independent components (ICs). Results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm for functional connectivity analysis.
