In medical image analysis, the long-range spatial features are often not accurately obtained by the traditional convolutional neural networks. Hence, we propose a TransClaw U-Net network structure. The transformer part is added after three convolution operations to fuse shallow features extracted by convolution operations for maximally encoding the long-range spatial features between patches. The 'Claw' in TransClaw U-net means that we add the bottom upsampling part to retain the deepest feature information for detail segmentation. In addition, the modified three-channel global attention mechanism to blend the outputs of three channels (the encoding part, the bottom upsampling part and the decoding part) to effectively extract image contours. The experimental results on Synapse Multi-organ Segmentation Dataset show that TransClaw U-Net performs better than other networks. The results of ablation experiments prove the effectiveness of the three improved components of the network and influence of input image size and skip-connection numbers on network performance. The source code will be publicly available once the paper is accepted. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel approach integrating Differential Evolution (DE) with multi-objective optimization techniques for enhancing Type-1 Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy rule-based systems to attain both fair predictive performance and enhanced interpretability within the context of explainable artificial intelligence. The developed approach encodes the whole knowledge base into one chromosome and endeavors to concurrently optimize the prediction accuracy, the number of rules, and the selection of relevant input features. The methodology was tested on Earth observation data for the estimation of soil health parameters via infrared spectroscopy, and more concretely i) on the 2015 LUCAS topsoil dataset to predict three key soil properties (namely, soil organic carbon, clay content, and pH) from laboratory spectra, and ii) on a set of PRISMA hyperspectral images to predict soil organic carbon in a region of northern Greece. Compared to the classical Random Forest (RF) algorithm, our proposed learning algorithm attains a fair balance between accuracy and interpretability, and is statistically equivalent to RF in terms of accuracy. The findings underscore the potential of the proposed methodology in refining TSK models and its applicability in Earth observation-driven predictions, paving the way for both enhanced modeling accuracy and sparse feature selection.

The challenges posed by nonlinearities in industrial systems necessitate innovative techniques that outperform the limitations of traditional methods such as principal component analysis (PCA). While Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) offers a robust solution to handle nonlinear data, its computational requirements are a significant issue, especially for large-sized datasets. In this work, we propose a novel technique, namely, reduced kernel principal component analysis-based spectral clustering (RKPCA SpC ), to monitor and detect faults in the benchmark Tennessee Eastman process. The suggested approach addresses the complexity associated with KPCA by reducing data size during the model training phase. This reduction involves retaining only the principal components, preserving informative features, and selecting pertinent samples without compromising the original data's content. The efficacy of the proposed method is evaluated through key performance metrics, including false alarm rate (FAR), missed detection rate (MDR), detection time delay (DTD), and computation time (CT). Additionally, gained execution time (GET), gained storage space (GSP), and loss function (LF) are considered, providing a comprehensive assessment of the developed paradigms' effectiveness. The results demonstrate the promising capabilities of our proposed scheme.

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) Nanoindentation procedure regarding biological samples poses significant challenges with respect to the accuracy of the provided results. These challenges are related to the inhomogeneity of biological samples, various uncertainties in experimental methods and certain approximations regarding the theoretical analysis. The most commonly used theoretical model for data processing at the linear elastic regime regarding biological samples is the Hertz model. This paper focuses on the investigation of the resulting errors of the basic equation of the Hertz theory that depends on the ratio, indentation depth/indenter’s radius regarding the Young’s modulus calculation. Several examples in the literature that do not take into account the value of the ratio indentation depth/indenter’s radius are reported and the related errors are presented and discussed. In addition, an extended new equation is derived which takes into account the influence of the aforementioned ratio on the calculation of the Young’s modulus and can be easily used for calculations. Moreover, a rational explanation, regarding the extended differences of the Young’s modulus calculations using the same experimental results when these are processed using the Hertz model and the Oliver & Pharr analysis (which is the general model that applies for any axisymmetric indenter) is provided. In conclusion, the derived equation is further combined with equations which take into account the shape of the sample in order to provide a complete and reliable theoretical tool which can be generally applied in order to reduce the errors produced by the current methodology. © 2021 Bentham Science Publishers.

The modern energy landscape is undergoing a seismic change from traditional, finite energy sources and toward cleaner, renewable alternatives. The restrictions faced by traditional sources, which are not only finite but increasingly shrink in the face of burgeoning global energy demands driven by population increase and industrial expansion, are driving this change. Although promising, renewable energy poses complications, particularly the reliance on climatic conditions. An important aspect of addressing these difficulties is effective energy management within distribution systems, which includes forecasting and optimization phases. This research focuses on forecasting using an advanced machine learning (ML) approach. Accurately forecasting renewable energy generation over time is critical for improving energy management. This technique is evaluated using a variety of performance indicators, including Mean Error (ME), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and the Coefficient of Determination (R 2 ). Empirical studies support the method's usefulness, demonstrating noteworthy performance with low error rates.

Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) imposes extremely high throughput requirement on video encoders based on High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265/HEVC). HEVC adopt many advanced developed techniques in order to compress and decompress the video sequence for ensuring the real time requirements with keeping the quality. The decoded video is obtained according to the syntax elements language specified by the HEVC standard. Consequently, HEVC adopt 74 syntax elements at the low level which are divided into four partitions: including quad tree partitioning, intra and inter prediction, transform level, quantization and loop filtering. This work propose a profound study of HEVC low level syntax elements. The four partitions of syntax elements are defined, detailed and specified (role). After that, the encoding process and order of each syntax element is given by diagram blocks followed by an examples of encoding process syntax elements for 4x4 and 8x8 transform blocks (references blocks) by using Matlab ***, performance comparison of different benchmarks is given in order to highlights the decoding efficiency of HEVC compared it predecessor AVC (Advenced Video Coding). This work give the only detailed study that demonstrate the main functionality of the all intra syntax elements encoding process in CABAC HEVC. © 2022 IEEE.

Is it necessary to calculate young’s modulus in afm nanoindentation experiments regarding biological samples?

Background: The determination of the mechanical properties of biological samples using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) at the nanoscale is usually performed using basic models arising from the contact mechanics theory. In particular, the Hertz model is the most frequently used theoretical tool for data processing. However, the Hertz model requires several assumptions, such as homogeneous and isotropic samples and indenters with perfectly spherical or conical shapes. As it is widely known, none of these requirements are 100 % fulfilled for the case of indentation experiments at the nanoscale. As a result, significant errors arise in the Young’s modulus calculation. At the same time, an analytical model that could account complexities of soft biomaterials, such as nonlinear behavior, anisotropy, and heterogeneity, may be far-reaching. In addition, this hypothetical model would be ‘too difficult’ to be applied in real clinical activities since it would require a very heavy workload and highly specialized personnel. Objective: In this paper, a simple solution is provided to the aforementioned dead-end. A new approach is introduced in order to provide a simple and accurate method for mechanical characterization at the nanoscale. Method: The ratio of the work done by the indenter on the sample of interest to the work done by the indenter on a reference sample is introduced as a new physical quantity that does not require homogeneous, isotropic samples or perfect indenters. Results: The proposed approach provides an accurate solution from not only a physical perspective but also a simpler solution which does not require activities such as the determination of the cantilever’s spring constant and the dimensions of the AFM tip. Conclusion: It has been observed from this opinion paper that the solution aims to provide a significant opportunity to overcome the existing limitations provided by Hertzian mechanics and apply AFM techniques in real clinical activities. © 2021 Bentham

A Parallel Read-Write Circuit With Fast Amplitude-Adaptive Matching Scheme to Memristor Crossbar Array

Memristor crossbar array (MCA) is a computing-in-memory (CIM) module for computational acceleration. However, conventional read-write (R-W) circuits for MCA rely heavily on external components and have shortcoming in long writing times. To address these issues, we propose a parallel R-W circuit with a fast amplitude-adaptive matching (AAM) scheme. The fast AAM scheme is designed to accelerate time of writing memristors in MCA by adaptively adjusting the writing voltage to match an optimal amplitude. The architecture of parallel R-W circuit are outlined with the implementation of R-W processes. The design principles of parallel R-W unit, fast AAM unit, and associated control logic are described for analyzing their functions within the circuit. By integrating the parallel R-W circuit with MCA, a computing block is leveraged in a neural network for classification tasks. The experimental results demonstrate that the neural network with multiple computing blocks maintains high accuracy across various datasets (over 80%). Furthermore, the proposed AAM scheme achieves an average 54% reduction in writing time compared to that one without AAM scheme. Compared to the pulse-width scheme, the parallel R-W circuit exhibits an average 3.05× speedup in adjusting a 5×5 MCA, and the speedup efficiency is higher as the increases of MCA size. © 2025 IEEE.

A novel ultra-wide-band polarization selective reflectarray by using true-time delay is presented in this paper. Tightly coupled elements and the method of true-time-delay are used to broaden the bandwidth of the reflectarray. The reflectarray has the advantages of large bandwidth, polarization selective, and reduced complexity and fabrication cost. A reflectarray with the elements arranged in a 41×41 grid is designed and simulated operating from 6 to 32GHz. The measured results show that the reflectarray has stable radiation patterns from 6 to 32GHz, over 5:1 frequency range and has a low loss and high efficiency over 60 %, it also has the low cross polarization below -28dB across the entire band and has the function of polarization selectivity. © 2021 IEEE.

Grapevine is one of the most important crops cultivated across Europe. Climate factors and diseases constantly threaten its production. Recently, Flavescence dorée (FD), an incurable grapevine disease with the obligation to uproot each infected plant, has been widely spread in Europe. The symptoms of FD are visually expressed in the late summer. Currently, the adopted procedure consists in scouting for infected plants by trained experts, which is time-consuming and not frequent enough. As stress development causes subtle spectral changes before any visible symptoms appear, during the summer of 2022, hyperspectral and multispectral images were acquired in the two vineyards near Riva del Garda, Trentino, Italy. A classification accuracy between 90.2 % and 96.9 % in distinguishing between infected and healthy plants was obtained from the hyperspectral data. These findings justify further efforts to use an in-house developed, affordable multispectral camera, significantly reducing equipment cost and procedure complexity while mapping the relevant spectral channels.
