A new method for the reduction of the number of colors in a digital image is proposed. The new method is based on the developed of a new neural network classifier that combines the advantages of the Growing Neural Gas (GNG) and the Kohonen Self-Organized Feature Map (SOFM) neural networks. We call the new neural network: Self-Growing and Self-Organized Neural Gas (SGONG). Its main advantage is that it defines the number of the created neurons and their topology in an automatic way. As a consecutive, isolated color classes, which may correspond to significant image details, can be obtained. The SGONG is fed by the color components and additional spatial features. To speed up the entire algorithm and to reduce memory requirements, a fractal scanning sub-sampling technique is used. The method is applicable to any type of color images and it can accommodate any type of color space. © The Eurographics Association 2005.

This paper presents a new application of independent component analysis (ICA) in magnetic resonance (MR) image analysis. One of most successful applications for ICA-based approaches in MR imaging is functional MRI (fMRI) which basically deals with one-dimensional temporal signals. The ICA approach proposed in this paper is rather different and considers a set of MR images acquired by different pulse sequences as a 3-dimensional image cube and performs image analysis rather than signal analysis. One major difference between the fMRI-based ICA approaches and our proposed ICA-based image analysis is that the ICA used in the former is under-complete as opposed to the latter which uses over-complete ICA. Such a fundamental difference results in completely different applications. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents new fast algorithms to improve the widely used endmember extraction algorithm, called pixel purity index (PPI) and also modify a revised version of PPI, called block of skewers (BOS) method. Since both the PPI and the BOS method suffer from same drawbacks in implementation, our proposed algorithms are designed to mitigate these dilemmas by introducing a newly developed concept, called virtual dimensionality (VD) and a process that can automatically determine a set of endmembers without appealing for parameters used in the PPI and BOS method. As a result, two modified PPI and BOSPPI algorithms are developed. Unlike the PPI and BOS method, the two new algorithms are iterative and provide stopping rules to automatically extract endmembers without manually selecting endmembers. The experimental study shows that the MPPI performs better than the PPI not only in computational complexity, but also in stability and performance, and the MBOSPPI could perform better than the BOS method if the blocks of skewers are properly designed. © 2005 by the American Society for Photogrammetry and remote sensing.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid Tabu Expectation Maximization (TEM) Algorithm for segmentation of Brain Magnetic Resonance (MR) images in both supervised and unsupervised framewrok. Gaussian Hidden Markov Random Field (GHMRF) is used to model the available degraded image. In supervised framework, the apriori image MRF model parameters as well as the GHMRF model parameters are assumed to be known. The class labels are estimated using the Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) estimation criterion. In unsupervised framework, the problem of model parameter estimation and label estimation is formulated in Expectation Maximization (EM) framework. The labels are estimated using the proposed Tabu Search algorithm while the model parameters are the maximum likelihood estimates. Our proposed algorithm yields results with arbitrary initial paramater set and thus overcomes the problem of proper choice of initial parameters. The results obtained are comparable with the results obtained by using the algorithm proposed by Zhang ***. [15] , where the Iterated Conditional Mode (ICJM) algorithm is used for computing the MAP estimates. Copyright © IICAI 2005.

Conventional "multiple-azimuth-look" space-borne scatterometers have been used to retrieve ocean surface wind vector for over three decades. However, the requirement for the antenna to view both forward and aft has made the scatterometer a difficult instrument to accommodate on remote sensing satellites with multiple earth-viewing sensors. In this paper, we present a new technique for ocean surface wind vector measurement using a "single-azimuth-look" combined active and passive microwave sensing from space. We demonstrate this methodology by using actual measurements of the ocean normalized radar cross section (sigma-0) and the radiometer-inferred wind magnitude respectively from the SeaWinds scatterometer and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) on-board the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS-II). For the scatterometer measurements, only the forward look, in the same direction as the AMSR measurements, is used. Owing to the biharmonic nature of the scatterometer anisotropic Geophysical Model Function (GMF), the retrieved wind direction consists of as many as four possible wind directions (aliases) at each wind vector cell (WVC). Alias selection is presented and performance is measured by comparison of the selected to the standard wind vector product from SeaWinds. Statistical analyses are performed and results show that it is feasible to measure ocean surface wind vector using single look geometry. © 2005 IEEE.

The US Army Joint Service Agent Water Monitor (JSAWM) program is currently interested in an approach that can implement a hardware-designed device in ticket-based hand-held assay (currently being developed) used for chemical/biological agent detection. This paper presents a preliminary investigation of the proof of concept. Three components are envisioned to accomplish the task. One is the ticket development which has been undertaken by the ANP, Inc. Another component is the software development which has been carried out by the remote sensing Signal and image processing laboratory (RSSIPL) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). A third component is an embedded system development which can be used to drive the UMBC-developed software to analyze the ANP-developed HHA tickets on a small pocket-size device like a PDA. The main focus of this paper is to investigate the third component that is viable and is yet to be explored. In order to facilitate to prove the concept, a flatbed scanner is used to replace a ticket reader to serve as an input device. The Stargate processor board is used as the embedded System with Embedded Linux installed. It is connected to an input device such as scanner as well as output devices such as LCD display or laptop etc. It executes the C-Coded processing program developed for this embedded system and outputs its findings on a display device. The embedded system to be developed and investigated in this paper is the core of a future hardware device. Several issues arising in such an embedded system will be addressed. Finally, the proof-of-concept pilot embedded system will be demonstrated.

Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) has been widely used as a performance evaluation tool to measure effectiveness of medical modalities. It is derived from a standard detection theory with false alarm and detection power interpreted as false positive (FP) and true positive (TP) respectively in terms of medical diagnosis. The ROC curve is plotted based on TP versus FP via hard decisions. This paper presents a three dimensional (3D) ROC analysis which extends the traditional two-dimensional (2D) ROC analysis by including a threshold parameter in a third dimension resulting from soft decisions, (SD). As a result, a 3D ROC curve can be plotted based on three parameters, TP, FP and SD. By virtue of such a 3D ROC curve three two-dimensional (2D) ROC curves can be derived, one of which is the traditional 2D ROC curve of TP versus FP with SD reduced to hard decision. In order to illustrate its utility in medical diagnosis, its application to magnetic resonance (MR) image classification is demonstrated. © 2005 IEEE.

Under the U.S. Army sponsored Joint Service Agent Water Monitor (JSAWM) program, developing hand-held assays using tickets for chemical/biological agent detection has been of major interest. One of keys to success is to develop detection algorithms that not only can effectively detect the presence of various agents, but also can quantify the detected agents. This paper presents a recent development of detection software that can perform 3-dimensional (3D) receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis which is based on quantified agent concentration. The ROC curves have been widely used in communications, signal processing and medical communities to evaluate the effectiveness of a detection technique. It generally formulates a signal detection problem as a binary composite hypothesis testing problem with the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis represents the case of no signal and the case of signal presence respectively. The ROC curve is then plotted based on the detection probability (power) PD versus the false alarm probability, P F. Unfortunately, such a two-dimensional (2D) (PD,P F)-based ROC curve does not factor in the concentration detected in an agent signal which is a crucial parameter in chemical/biological agent detection. The proposed 3D ROC analysis is developed from such a need. It includes an additional parameter, referred to as threshold t, which is used to threshold the detected agent signal concentration. Consequently, a different value of t results in a different 2D ROC curve. In order to take into account the thresholding factor t, a 3D ROC curve is derived and plotted based on three parameters, (PD,PF,t). As a result of the 3D ROC curve, three 2D ROC curves can be also derived. One is the conventional 2D (P D,PF)-ROC curve. Another is a 2D (PD,t)-ROC curve which describes the relationship between PD and the threshold value t. A third one is a 2D (PF,t)-ROC curve which shows the effect of the threshold value t on PF.
