In this paper, we propose a blind watermark detection scheme for digital cinema which is robust against D-A/A-D conversion attack. D-A/A-D conversion attack commonly happens during capturing cinema with a camera and is composed of various geometrical distortions as well as signal processing distortions. In many video applications, geometric distortions have been compensated by utilizing auto-correlation function (ACF). Since the ACF cannot resist projective transform but affine transform, we present a robust watermark detection scheme utilizing local auto-correlation function (LACF) with a mathematical model. Also, we suggest a way to design watermark pattern to improve performance of the LACF. We demonstrate robustness of the presented scheme against D-A/A- D conversion attacks for digital cinema as well as common video processing attacks.

We demonstrate a multiple star WDM-PON using BSWDM filter to serve several subscriber groups located at a widely distributed area. It enables to use a single type AWG for second RN and simplifies management issues.

Zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) is a promising technique for multiuser MIMO systems. However, such method requires all the users to feed their channel information back to the base station (BS), so the BS can select the users and receive antennas as well as computing the transmit beamforming matrix. The quality of feedback information is crucial to the resultant system throughput. In order to reduce the power expenditure of the mobile stations (MS) while preserving the feedback quality, we propose a new feedback scheme based on the use of infrastructure relay stations (RS). The simulation results show that the scheme generally gives a better average throughput with lower SNR value requirements.

We have developed and evaluated three generalized systems for event detection. The first system is a simple brute force search method, where each space-time location in the video is evaluated by a binary decision rule on whether it contains the event or not. The second system is build on top of a head tracker to avoid costly brute force searching. The decision stage is a combination of state of the art feature extractors and classifiers. Our third system has a probabilistic framework. From the observations, the pose of the people are estimated and used to determine the presence of event. Finally we introduce two ad-hoc methods that were designed to specifically detect OpposingFlow and TakePicture events. The results are promising as we are able to get good results on several event categories, while for all events we have gained valuable insights and experience.

Computational acceleration on graphics processing units (GPUs) can make advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstruction algorithms attractive in clinical settings, thereby improving the quality of MR images across a broad spectrum of applications. At present, MR imaging is often limited by high noise levels, significant imaging artifacts, and/or long data acquisition (scan) times. advanced image reconstruction algorithms can mitigate these limitations and improve image quality by simultaneously operating on scan data acquired with arbitrary trajectories and incorporating additional information such as anatomical constraints. However, the improvements in image quality come at the expense of a considerable increase in computation. This paper describes the acceleration of an advanced reconstruction algorithm on NVIDIA's Quadro FX 5600. Optimizations such as register allocating the voxel data, tiling the scan data, and storing the scan data in the Quadro's constant memory dramatically reduce the reconstruction's required bandwidth to off-chip memory. The Quadro's special functional units provide substantial acceleration of the trigonometric computations in the algorithm's inner loops, and experimentally-tuned code transformations increase the reconstruction's performance by an additional 20%. The reconstruction of a 3D image with 1283 voxels ultimately achieves 150 GFLOPS and requires less than two minutes on the Quadro, while reconstruction on a quadcore CPU is thirteen times slower. Furthermore, relative to the true image, the error exhibited by the advanced reconstruction is only 12%, while conventional reconstruction techniques incur error of 42%. In short, the acceleration afforded by the GPU greatly increases the appeal of the advanced reconstruction for clinical MRI applications. Copyright 2008 ACM.

A combined top-down and bottom-up approach was used for precise placement of metal nanoparticles on silicon substrates. The study used laser interference lithography (LIL) technique, to open windows on a silicon wafer with a silicon oxide mask. Inverted pyramids were obtained at the window region, by etching the silicon wafer in KOH under the top-down approach. The bottom-up approach involved the evaporation of a gold (Au) layer on the whole silicon wafer and annealing at elevated temperature. The Au inside the inverted pyramids was coarsened and formed Au dots inside them. The results show that the diameter of the metal nanoparticles can be tuned more effectively, by changing the Au layer thickness, along with the annealing temperature.

Distributed spectrum sensing (DSS) enables a Cognitive Radio (CR) network to reliably detect licensed users and avoid causing interference to licensed communications. The data fusion technique is a key component of DSS. We discuss the Byzantine failure problem in the context of data fusion, which may be caused by either malfunctioning sensing terminals or Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification (SSDF) attacks. In either case, incorrect spectrum sensing data will be reported to a data collector which can lead to the distortion of data fusion outputs. We investigate various data fusion techniques, focusing on their robustness against Byzantine failures. In contrast to existing data fusion techniques that use a fixed number of samples, we propose a new technique that uses a variable number of samples. The proposed technique, which we call Weighted Sequential Probability Ratio Test (WSPRT), introduces a reputation-based mechanism to the Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT). We evaluate WSPRT by comparing it with a variety of data fusion techniques under various network operating conditions. Our simulation results indicate that WSPRT is the most robust against the Byzantine failure problem among the data fusion techniques that were considered.

The article presents an example of application, which could be used to support the work of a dental clinic. It will provide a rich graphical work environment accessible from the workstation of each distributed clients. The core of the system will be implemented on the application server, using Java Enterprise Edition specific technologies, which will provide business logic and access to the database common to the whole system. Thanks to this design the system is very scalable and flexible.

Four hybrid selection maximum ratio combining (HS/MRC) diversity schemes over correlated Ricean fading channels are investigated. In particular, the correlated diversity branches are either decorrelated or orthogonalized prior to diversity combining. The optimum time-invariant selection of diversity branches prior to MRC as well as conventional HS/MRC are also considered. The average bit error rate (BER) performance of these four diversity combining schemes is obtained using the Prony approximation method and using computer simulations. Numerical results indicate that decorrelation and orthogonalization of the correlated branches prior to diversity combining can restore some of the diversity gain lost due to the correlation between branches. This is observed especially for the case of a strong line-of-sight fading component, and for small numbers of selected branches in HS/MRC diversity where the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement can be as large as 2 dB.

In this paper, we introduce a new zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) transmission scheme for multi-user MIMO Gaussian channel with finite rate feedback. With this transmission scheme, the base station adaptively utilizes transmit antennas according to the channel status and the number of active users to control the multiuser interference. We show through selected numerical results that our proposed scheme can achieve remarkable sum-rate improvement compared to other schemes with fixed transmit antennas.
