In this paper, we propose a novel ML decoding scheme based on the combination of depth- and breadth-first search methods on a partitioned tree for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. The proposed scheme first partitions the searching tree into several stages, each of which is then searched by a depth- or breadth-first search method, maximally exploiting the advantages of both the depth- and breadth-first search methods. Numerical results indicate that, when the depth- and breadth-first search algorithms are adopted appropriately, the proposed scheme exhibits substantially lower computational complexity than conventional ML decoders while maintaining the ML bit error performance.

We propose a new difference expansion (DE) embedding based reversible data hiding algorithm for digital images. Unlike other current DE-based algorithms that are primarily interested in using small pixel-pair differences (i.e., flat image regions) for data hiding, our algorithm gives priority to the use of image edges and textures. The experiments prove that our algorithm can produce visual image quality more suitable for human visual characteristics.

This paper discusses a near-optimal detection algorithm for 2times2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems operating on ultrawideband (UWB) channels. The reported affine restoration (AR) algorithm exploits the independence among the elements of the channel matrix and performs a parallel detection process at all receive antennas. For performance approaching that of maximum likelihood (ML) detection, but with lower complexity, the channel state information (CSI) at the receiver is utilized to restore the transmitted vector without channel matrix inversion or decomposition. We create a subset of the ML search space so as to reduce the computational complexity with minimal compromise on performance. We also discuss a modification in the proposed algorithm to further reduce the detection complexity. The proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal performance as demonstrated through simulations.

Curves are one of the major components of digital maps. In order to fingerprint digital maps, this paper addresses an efficient watermarking technique for curves. We choose the embedding domain based on the curvature of sample points and alter the coordinates of selected sample points for watermark embedding. The watermarked curve is reconstructed using Bezier curve segments. The use of Bezier model ensures not only large embedding capacity and high detection response but also small embedding distortion.

Path planning for small unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) becomes a difficult problem when accounting for wind. Wind can affect the path quality in a nonlinear manner requiring extended segment lengths for accurate measurements. Dynamic programming offers an efficient solution to create way point paths justified when settling lengths are linearly interpolated. A database of good turn progressions supports this method and can be composed off-line. The heuristic inherent in dynamic programming provides near optimal paths in very fast computational time because it restricts the search to a small number of candidates. A solution can be guaranteed by including turns over 180deg.

In this paper, a new integer frequency offset estimation method is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based digital video broadcasting (DVB) systems. Several pilot-aided frequency offset estimation methods have been proposed for OFDM-based DVB systems. In the conventional methods, however, the information of some combinations that pilots provide is used only. Thus, in this paper, we propose a new integer frequency offset estimation method exploiting the information of all combinations that pilots provide. The simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional method in terms of the probability of integer frequency offset estimation failure.

Non-linear predictor-based dynamic bandwidth allocation (NLPDBA) schemes for improving the time division multiplexed passive optical networks (TDM-PONs) upstream transmission efficiency have been investigated in an ad hoc manner. In this paper, we establish a general state space model to analyze the stability of the NLPDBA schemes from the TDM-PON system's point of view, and propose controller design guidelines to maintain the system stability under different scenarios. We prove that a TDM-PON system with NLPDBA is stable by proper pole placements as the traffic changes. Our analysis suggests a straightforward framework for designing and applying the NLPDBA scheme for TDM-PONs that ensures stability.
