In this paper GaNP/GaP LED structures are much simpler to grow than conventional process, chip processing uses existing technology, and GaNP/GaP LEDs exhibit only a small wavelength shift with injection current. With increasing temperature, the electroluminescence (EL) intensity decreases. Thus, GaNP/GaP LEDs are in the process of being commercialized.

A new analytic method to design excitation and emission filters of a multispectral fluorescence imaning system for poultry fecal inspection is proposed. A mathematical modal for a multispectral imaging system is proposed and its system parameters, such as excitation and emission filters, were optimally determined by linear discriminant analysis(LDA). Alternation scheme was propoded for numerical implementation. Fluorescence characteristics of organic materials filters feces of poultry carcasses are analtzed by LDA to design the optimal excitation and emission filters for poultry fecal inspection. The proposed method is applicable to other agricultural products which are distinguishable by their spectral properties.

Miniaturization of the resonator is significant for a compact filter. To meet such requirement, several techniques, for instance, using the high permittivity material or using the step-impedance resonator with multiple resonant modes, can be used. Dual-mode resonators have advantageous features for the bandpass pass filter (BPF) design, such as excellent unloaded Q values, size compactness, low radiation loss and ease of design because transmission-line theory and design tools can easily be employed. Therefore, in this paper, we present a novel miniature dual-mode BPF based on the fractal geometry resonator. The proposed fractal geometry is introduced from the Sierpinski square and described by the generated method. A 3rd order Sierpinski square is adopted as the resonator structure since it has a high quality factor, suitable for the proposed dual mode BPF design. The design procedure is discussed in the following. A dual mode BPF at 2.4 GHz is characterized by using the full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulator IE3D and verified by the experimented results.

Acoustic communication often relies on a large size array with multiple spatially separated hydrophones to deal with the challenging underwater channel. This poses serious limitation to its application at compact size underwater platforms, for example, autonomous underwater vehicles. In this paper, we propose to use vector sensors to achieve reliable acoustic communication. Using experimental data, we show the usefulness of particle velocity channels for acoustic communication. Further, to deal with the dynamic ocean environment, a time reversal multichannel receiver is proposed to utilize particle velocity channels. Our results show that the receiver using vector sensors can offer significant size reduction, compared to the receiver based on the pressure sensors, while providing comparable communication performance.

It is well known that speech production and perception process is inherently bimodal consisting of audio and visual components. Recently there has been increased interest in using the visual modality in combination with the acoustic modality for improved speech processing. This field of study has gained the title of audio-visual speech processing. Lip movement recognition, also known as lip reading, is a communication skill which involves the interpretation of lip movements in order to estimate some important parameters of the lips that include, but not limited to, size, shape and orientation. In this paper, we represent a hybrid framework for lip reading which is based on both audio and visual speech parameters extracted from a video stream of isolated spoken words. The proposed algorithm is self-tuned in the sense that it starts with an estimations of speech parameters based on visual lip features and then the coefficients of the algorithm are fine-tuned based on the extracted audio parameters. In the audio speech processing part, extracted audio features are used to generate a vector containing information of the speech phonemes. These information are used later to enhance the recognition and matching process. For lip feature extraction, we use a modified version of the method used by F. Huang and T. Chen for tracking of multiple faces. This method is based on statistical color modeling and the deformable template. The experiments based on the proposed framework showed interesting results in recognition of isolated words.

Terahertz pulsed imaging (TPItrade) is a non-ionizing and non-destructive technique. Image contrast has been seen between normal and diseased tissues in ex vivo measurements. Due to its coherent detection, TPI can easily reveal the dielectric properties of samples and recently it has been used for studying a wide range of biological materials. In this study, we try to differentiate between freshly harvested organ samples from laboratory rats using TPI. Consistent differences in the refractive index and absorption coefficient have been seen. Results show that TPI could be an effective tool to quantify these differences.

Singular systems have been the subject of interest over the last two decades due to their many practical applications. But it has to be said that system identification of such system is still a challenging area because of the difficulty of identification of such systems for their complex structures. In addition, it seems that by developing a useful method for identification of singular system, one can use the useful property of such systems in describing the natural complex phenomena. This paper presents a novel methodology for identifying nonlinear singular systems from empirical data. Singular systems are idealized models for systems with slow and quick modes of change. However, their identification is a challenging problem even for the linear case. A new learning method, generalized locally linear model tree (GLoLiMoT) algorithm is introduced. The contribution of this paper is to provide a method for adjusting the parameters of fuzzy descriptor model, e.g. the splitting ratio and the standard deviation, the number of locally linear neurons or the number of linear singular systems for the consequent part in fuzzy descriptor model as well as the order of the singular system. By these modifications an accurate model of nonlinear singular system is obtained which is compared with several other methods in two case studies. Results depict the power of the proposed approach in describing nonlinear complex phenomena.

A common method for constructing a function from a finite set of moments is to solve a constrained minimization problem. The idea is to find, among all functions with the given moments, that function which minimizes a physically motivated, strictly convex functional. In the kinetic theory of gases, this functional is the kinetic entropy; the given moments are macroscopic densities; and the solution to the constrained minimization problem is used to formally derive a closed system of partial differential equations which describe how the macroscopic densities evolve in time. Moment equations are useful because they simplify the kinetic, phase-space description of a gas, and with entropy-based closures, they retain many of the fundamental properties of kinetic transport. Unfortunately, in many situations, macroscopic densities can take on values for which the constrained minimization problem does not have a solution. In this paper, we give a geometric description of these so-called degenerate densities in a very general setting. Our key tool is the complementary slackness condition that is derived from a dual formulation of a minimization problem with relaxed constraints. We show that the set of degenerate densities is a union of convex cones defined by the complementary slackness conditions and, under reasonable assumptions, that this set is small in both a topological and a measure-theoretic sense. This result is important for further assessment and implementation of entropy-based moment closures. An expanded version of this work can be found in [Hauck et al., SIAM J. Contr. Understanding the primatespsila visual system has been one of the challenging problems of different groups of scientists for years. Though many studies, from physiology and neuroscience to computer vision, are done on different aspects of visual processing in the cortex, a comprehensive computational model of visual cortex is still missing. We have implemented a computational model of object recognition in ventral visual pathway in our previous work. This hierarchical model covers visual areas V1/V2, V4/PIT, and AIT sending inputs to the Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) for categorization. To extend our model, in this work, we have added a simple model of motion detection in neurons of areas V1 and MT of the dorsal stream to our previous model. This has enabled the model to perform another principal function of the visual cortex, i.e., motion perception.

Identifying breast cancer susceptibility genes is one of the key challenges in breast cancer research. Conventional gene-based approaches can identify patterns of gene activity that sub-classify tumors, by which genes with known breast cancer mutations are typically not detected. In this study, we present a novel network motif-based approach that integrates biological network topology and high-throughput gene expression data to identify markers not as individual genes but as network motifs. We observed that the network motifs are more reproducible than individual marker genes selected without biological network information, and that they achieve higher accuracy in the classification of metastatic versus non-metastatic tumors.
