In noncooperative Iris recognition one should deal with uncontrolled behavior of the subject as well as uncontrolled lighting conditions. That means imperfect focus, contrast, brightness, and orientation among the others. To cope with this situation we propose to take iris images at both near infrared (NIR) and visible light (VL) and use them simultaneously for recognition. In this paper, a novel approach for iris recognition is proposed so that extracted features of NIR and VL images are fused to improve the recognition rate. When the images do not have enough quality due to focus, contrast, etc., effects of feature fusion is more pronounced. This is the situation in UTIRIS database, which is used in our experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed approach, especially in small training samples, leads to a remarkable improvement on recognition rate compared with either NIR or VL recognition.

We propose a constrained, three-dimensional, nonparametric, entropy-based, coupled, multi-shape approach to segment subcortical brain structures from magnetic resonance images (MRI). The proposed method uses PCA to develop shape models that capture structural variability. It integrates geometrical relationship between different structures into the algorithm by coupling them (limiting their independent deformations). On the other hand, to allow variations among coupled structures, it registers each structure separately when building the shape models. It defines an entropy-based energy function, which is minimized using quasi-Newton algorithm. To this end, probability density functions (pdf) are estimated iteratively using nonparametric Parzen window method. In the optimization algorithm, constraints are used to improve segmentation quality. These constraints are extracted from training data. Sample results are given for the segmentation of caudate, hippocampus, and putamen, illustrating highly superior performance of the proposed method compared to the most similar methods in the literature.

A transformer-less cold cathode fluorescent lamp driver for liquid crystal display backlight is proposed in this paper. Commonly, a CCFL driver has a transformer with high turn ratio in order to step up low input voltage to high sinusoidal lamp voltage. This high voltage and high turn ratio transformer has large size and high cost. The proposed transformer-less CCFL driver which is based on parallel-loaded resonant topology features simplicity, so it reduces the complexity and the cost of overall system. And the proposed circuit with the asymmetric control has good dimming capability by duty control. In this paper, the analysis of the proposed CCFL driving circuit and experimental results for 32-inch commercial LCD television backlight are presented.

We discuss the electrical resistivity and thermal stability of smooth thin silver (Ag) films characterized by significantly lower root mean square (RMS) surface roughness, peak-to-valley height distribution, and grain-size distribution. The smooth film was prepared by using a very thin ( ~ 1-2 nm) nucleation layer of evaporated germanium (Ge) prior to Ag evaporation. The sheet resistance of the rough silver (10 nm Ag) film is R Ag-rough ~ 51 Omega/sq compared to the smooth silver (10 nm Ag/2 nm Ge) film with R *** ~22 Omega/sq. The smooth Ag is also shown to be thermally more stable for temperatures less than 120degC.

Hypergeometry of objects in K dimensions is used to determine the optimum dimension of signal-to-noise ratio adaptive receivers. Previously,it is shown that the volume and surface area of many K-dimensional objects are maximized for a particular dimension. In this paper,this observation is used to conjecture that the average performance measures of signal-tonoise ratio adaptive receivers reach a maximum for a particular dimension. The performance analysis is obtained assuming a generic two-stage diversity combining structure at the receiver front-end. Although the diversity combining schemes increase the output channel amplitude by adding more receiver antennas for any branch fading statistics,the subsequent signal-to-noise ratio adaptive signal processing creates an optimum in the number of receiver antennas. This is confirmed by numerical examples assuming a bank of detectors operating over erasure subchannels. The optimum dimension of the receiver has significant impact on the overall receiver complexity.

An integrated system for minimally invasive robot-assisted image-guided lung brachytherapy has been developed. The system incorporates an experimental setup for accurate radioactive seed placement with commercially available dosimetry planning software. The end result is a complete system that allows planning and executing a brachytherapy procedure with increased accuracy. The results of the in vitro seed placement evaluation show that seed misplacement has a significant effect on the volume receiving more than 200% of the dose (V200), and the minimum dosage received by 90% of the volume (D90).

Each of us has a complex and reciprocal relationship with our environment. Based on limited knowledge of this interwoven set of influences and consequences, we constantly make choices: where to live, how to go to work, what brands to buy, what to do with our leisure time. These choices evolve into patterns, and these patterns become driving functions of our relationship with the world around us. With increasing ease, devices we carry can sense, process, and transmit data on these patterns for our own use or to share, carefully, with others. In particular, here we will focus on location time series, gathered from GPS-enabled personal mobile devices. From this capacity emerges a new class of hybrid mobile-web applications that, first, enable personal exploration of our own patterns and, second, use the same data to index our life into other available datasets about the world around us. Such applications, revealing the previously unobservable about our own lives, offer an opportunity to employ mobile technology to illuminate the ramifications of our choices on others and the effects of the "microenvironments" we move through on us [1,10]. Chalchopyrite CIGS thin films were prepared by the two-stage growth technique. The processes were based on the controlled selenization of sputtering metallic precursors with elemental Se vapor in closed space. The modified selenization process by fitting data prevented the substantial losses and the formation of voids from the interior of absorbers. Accordingly, adhesion was improved and the grain was enlarged, which could span throughout the entire film from the surface towards the Mo back electrode. In addition, a single-phased CIGS thin film was obtained by this selenization process simultaneously.

Several types of implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have been developed to overcome disadvantages of the conventional hearing aids. IMEHDs are divided into three parts which are a microphone, a signal processing unit, and a vibration transducer. In particular, the vibration transducer is very important component because it directly generates the mechanical vibration in the ossicles so that the input sound can be delivered to the inner ear. As one of the vibration transducer for IMEHDs, a differential floating mass transducer (DFMT) has been developed in Korea. However, the study for the DFMT has focused on the improvement in vibration efficiency until now. In this paper, the hermetically sealed DFMT for implantation is implemented and its vibration characteristic is measured. Then, the vibration characteristic of the DFMT is also compared with that of the stapes displacement defined by ASTM. Through the comparison, it is verified that the implemented DFMT has proper vibration displacement.
