In this paper, we introduce a new efficient data layout scheme to efficiently handle out-of-core axis-aligned slicing queries of very large multidimensional volumetric data. Slicing is a very useful dimension reduction tool that removes or reduces occlusion problems in visualizing 3D/4D volumetric data sets and that enables fast visual exploration of such data sets. We show that the data layouts based on typical space-filling curves are not optimal for the out-of-core slicing queries and present a novel component-based data layout scheme for a specialized problem domain, in which it is only required to provide fast slicing at every k-th value, for any k > 1. Our component-based data layout scheme provides much faster processing time for any axis-aligned slicing direction at every k-th value, k > 1, requiring less cache memory size and without any replication of data. In addition, the data layout can be generalized to any high dimension.

We discuss a new efficient out-of-core multidimensional indexing structure, information-aware 2 n -tree, for indexing very large multidimensional volumetric data. Building a series of (n-1)-Dimensional indexing structures on n-Dimensional data causes a scalability problem in the situation of continually growing resolution in every dimension. However, building a single n-Dimensional indexing structure can cause an indexing effectiveness problem compared to the former case. The information-aware 2 n -tree is an effort to maximize the indexing structure efficiency by ensuring that the subdivision of space have as similar coherence as possible along each dimension. It is particularly useful when data distribution along each dimension constantly shows a different degree of coherence from each other dimension. Our preliminary results show that our new tree can achieve higher indexing structure efficiency than previous methods.

Data compression techniques have extensive applications in power-constrained digital communication systems, such as in the rapidly-developing domain of wireless sensor network applications. This paper explores energy consumption tradeoffs associated with data compression, particularly in the context of lossless compression for acoustic signals. Such signal processing is relevant in a variety of sensor network applications, including surveillance and monitoring. Applying data compression in a sensor node generally reduces the energy consumption of the transceiver at the expense of additional energy expended in the embedded processor due to the computational cost of compression. This paper introduces a methodology for comparing data compression algorithms in sensor networks based on the figure of merit D/ E, where D is the amount of data (before compression) that can be transmitted under a given energy budget E for computation and communication. We develop experiments to evaluate, using this figure of merit, different variants of linear predictive coding. We also demonstrate how different models of computation applied to the embedded software design lead to different degrees of processing efficiency, and thereby have significant effect on the targeted figure of merit.

A novel theoretical approach to the dynamics analysis of excitation and dephasing of plasmon modes in nanoparticles is presented. This approach is based on the biorthogonal plasmon mode expansion, and it leads to the predictions of time dynamics of excitation of specific plasmon modes as well as their steady state amplitude and their decay. Temporal characteristics of plasmon modes in nanoparticles are expressed in terms of their shapes, permittivity dispersion relations, and excitation conditions. In the case of the Drude model, analytical expressions for time-dynamics of plasmon modes are obtained.

In uncontrolled environments, with dynamic background and lighting changes, performing efficient and real-time foreground ? background segmentation is very challenging. This work is based on the hypothesis that the combination of long wave infrared (LWIR) (8-12 μm) and colour cameras can significantly improve the robustness of moving objects extraction. Pros and cons of colour and thermal imagers in outdoor video monitoring applications are discussed. In order to fuse information from both sensors, we favoured an approach based on "analytical fusion" rather than "representative fusion". Starting from a state-of-the-art algorithm for moving objects extraction in colour video (non-parametric codebook model [1]), we first adapted the method for processing of "Red-Green-Blue-Thermal" video format. A preliminary objective performance evaluation of detection accuracy is presented. Original image sequences grabbed with co-aligned thermal and visible fields of view was used. Finally, some improvements to the original codebook model are proposed.
