Development of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and structures they interact with, especially for navigation applications constitutes one of the most challenging tasks in today's micromechanics. In addition to design, analysis, and fabrication capabilities, this task also requires advanced test methodologies for determination of functional characteristics of MEMS to enable verification as well as refinement and optimization of their designs. More specifically, development of MEMS requires sophisticated design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and characterization tools. These tools can be categorized as analytical, computational, and experimental. Solutions using the tools from any one category alone do not usually provide necessary information on MEMS and extensive merging, or hybridization, of the tools from different categories is used. One of the approaches employed in the development of MEMS, as well as other complex structures of contemporary interest, is based on a combined use of the analytical, computational, and experimental solutions (ACES) methodology. Development of this methodology was made possible by recent advances in optoelectronic methodology, which was coupled with the state-of-the-art computational methods, to offer a considerable promise for effective development of the design of MEMS. This approach facilitates characterization of dynamic and thermomechanical behavior of MEMS components, packages for MEMS, and other complex material structures. In this paper, we describe the novel optoelectronic methodology that facilitates development of MEMS and illustrate its use with representative examples by emphasizing their functional operation/ characteristics, reliability, and durablity.

One of the challenging tasks in data management and interoperation is efficient data integration. Data integration in scientific community is affected by heterogeneities of the data and diversity of the participating data sources. We have developed a web-based data integration framework, HIDE, for hydrology datasets and data sources. The system is built on an extended XML mediator architecture with modular methodology and software engineering practices of simplicity, extensibility and flexibility. HIDE promotes on-demand data integration and carries functionalities such as search and data access, data integration and remote data visualization. Registration of a new data source to HIDE for integration involves minimal effort of adding a few XML metadata files. The system can help hydrologists to access and share, and dynamically integrate data from diverse data sources quickly. HIDE was primarily built for integrating data from National Weather services with datasets from various autonomous organizations.

Key management plays an essential role in achieving security in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A range of new key distribution schemes have been suggested in an attempt to improve existing ones which are inappropriate for WSNs. However these schemes are still vulnerable when a certain number of sensor nodes are captured. The key distribution proposed in this paper makes use of coordinator sensor nodes, increasing the number of nodes that would need to be captured by an adversary. The analysis of our scheme against well known schemes such as the DDHV scheme shows a significant improvement in security.

The single sustaining driver (SSD) for AC plasma display panel (AC-PDP) can simplify and optimize the circuit part of PDP, however it suffers from twice a high voltage stress of switches compared with conventional sustaining driver (SD). To solve this problem, new SSD employing the voltage stress reduction technique (VSRT) is proposed. By adjusting the gate timing with the proposed simple structure, the voltage stresses of all devices are effectively ensured at Vs. Therefore, the proposed SSD features a low cost, reduced heating, and a simple structure.

A new boost half bridge (BHB) converter is presented. It is composed of additional switch, diode and coupled winding to boost inductor of BHB converter. Using the transferring of boost inductor current to coupled winding in a short period, the cancellation of ZVS current, which always occurs in convention one, is prevented. Therefore, the ZVS operation is easily achieved by leakage inductor current of transformer. Furthermore, since negatively build-up leakage inductor current of boost winding helps the ZVS operation throughout full load range, the excellent ZVS operation and high efficiency is achieved.

To improve system throughput and extend coverage, multi-hop relaying is a promising technology in wireless communication systems. Thus, multi-hop relaying is world-widely gaining huge attention as a key research item. Nevertheless, it may cause longer delay and degrade resource efficiency at the cost of the benefits due to multi-hop relaying. In this paper, we propose a traffic adaptive uplink scheduling algorithm for relay station, which could be applied to the centralized multi-hop system such as IEEE 802.16 MMR efficiently. The proposed algorithm can overcome those defects of multi-hop relaying technology and enhance system performance.

In this paper, a new architecture is proposed for the efficient human interaction with software robot (Sobot) in a PDA and the Sobot transmission between PDAs. Sobot can move to any mobile device through a wireless communication network. This ability is required to follow its user by moving itself to a device in his/her new location. Sobot as an artificial creature, has genetic code which is a set of computerized codes representing the personality. It has an internal state which consists of motivation, homeostasis, and emotion. The data set of genetic code and current internal state are transmitted through the network when it moves to the other device. A main server manages IP addresses of registered devices, Sobot's data set, and Sobot's location for the transmission. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, Sobot is implemented in windows mobile environment of PDA such that it can interact with a human being and move to the other mobile device without spatial limitation.

Recent broadband wireless access systems apply voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) for their voice services, so a mobile station (MS) requires an efficient energy-saving algorithm for VoIP services to prolong its battery lifetime. The IEEE 802.16e system called Mobile WiMAX provides the power saving class (PSC) of type II as an energy-saving algorithm for VoIP service, but it is not originally designed to consider silent periods of VoIP traffic. Therefore, we propose a new hybrid energy-saving algorithm suitable for VoIP services with silence suppression, which basically follows PSC II during talk-spurt periods, but uses the truncated binary exponential algorithm of PSC I during silent periods. The analysis and simulation results show that the proposed hybrid scheme reduces power consumption effectively during silent periods while satisfying the maximum allowable end-to-end delay and low packet drop probability constraints with respect to the quality of service (QoS) of VoIP.
