This paper presents a low-ripple, switched-capacitor-based DC-DC converter with an optimal efficiency tracking scheme. The proposed converter that interfaces with energy harvesters, such as thermoelectric generators (TEG) and photovoltaic (PV) solar cells, provides a supply voltage with minimized ripples to the sensing units in self-powered wearable health monitoring devices. The proposed converter employs a reconfigurable charge pump (RCP) with 7 conversion ratios (CRs), a CR tunning loop, and a voltage regulation loop (VRL). The CR tunning loop adjusts the CR to its optimal value not only for adapting input voltage changes across a range of 0.35 - 1 V but also for tracking the optimal end-to-end power conversion efficiency (ηEE). Under each CR, the VRL controls the RCP to regulate the output voltage at 2 V. The output ripples are below 1 mV, eliminating the need for an extra regulator. The converter can provide up to 200 μA load current and achieve a peak ηEE of 74.5%. In addition, the converter implemented a cold start charge pump to enable self-sustained operation. The proposed DC-DC converter was fabricated in a 180 nm standard CMOS process and occupied a silicon area of 2.7 mm2. © 2023 IEEE.

Power transformers (PTRFs) are vital components for power systems, as they protect the entire substation equipment from failure. Their protection must be fast and efficient, as they are significant and expensive devices. There are different types of transformer protection schemes, such as Overcurrent, distance, Buchholz Relay, and Differential protection. However, this study focuses on a Differential current protection scheme on the parallel transformer configuration to isolate the faulty component from the rest of the system e.g. faulty PTRFs. It further developed the Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) to analyse and evaluate parallel PTRF differential current protection scheme, using SEL487E and MiCOM-P645 Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) relays integrated with Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) for real-time simulation via the CMS omicron amplifier for current injection. Also, it evaluated the functionality of the SEL487E and MiCOM-P645 IED relays using the IEC 61850 standard for communication, by sending a GOOSE-based trip signal in the event of a fault. The generated simulation results show that the parallel PTRF protection scheme configuration is successful, and various fault scenarios have been tested and shown to be successful as well. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes the robust multivariable controller for the single-stage grid connected photovoltaic (PV) energy systems. The PV generator is interfaced to the grid through the three-phase LCL filtered voltage sourced converter (VSC). The proposed controller is designed to optimally control the active and reactive power injected to the grid notwithstanding the PV generator and grid system dynamics. Specifically, the proposed multivariable control scheme is designed to trade-off between control input effort and converter/grid states regulation by merely deciding appropriate quadratic performance indices. Similarly, the servomechanism approach is introduced at the outer-loop to track the DC-link dynamics interacting with the PV generator maximum power point tracker dynamics. To enhance the closed-loop system stability and robustness, the optimal state feedback observer based on H-infinity approach is designed to minimize cost and improves system reliability. The resulting augmented observer-based multivariable control scheme features tracking ability (1.25% SSE and 10ms settling time) and robustness against grid and PV dynamics. Unlike the conventional multi-loop vector controllers for the grid-tie LCL-VSC structure, the proposed scheme does not require any special damping compensators, which makes it simple to design and implement. Finally, the comparative results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

Privacy-preserving machine learning has achieved exciting breakthroughs for collaboratively training machine learning models under strong information-theoretic privacy guarantees. Despite the recent advances, communication bottleneck still remains as a major challenge against scalability to large neural networks. To address this challenge, in this work we introduce CLOVER, the first multi-party neural network training framework with linear communication complexity, significantly improving over the quadratic state-of-the-art, under strong end-to-end information-theoretic privacy guarantees. CLOVER builds on a novel degree reduction mechanism with linear communication complexity, termed Double Lagrange Coding, for coded computing. While providing strong multi-round information-theoretic privacy guarantees, CLOVER achieves equal adversary tolerance, resilience to user dropouts, and model accuracy as the state-of-the-art, while significantly cutting down the communication overhead. In doing so, CLOVER addresses a key technical challenge in collaborative neural network training, paving the way for large-scale privacy-aware deep learning applications. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel approach is introduced to enhance the torque density of a permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMa-SynRM). The PMa-SynRM reduces permanent magnet usage by leveraging both reluctance and magnetic torques along the q-axis and d-axis. In this study, our objective was to enhance torque density by minimizing the phase difference between the d-axis and q-axis, which in turn narrows the gap between the reluctance and magnetic torques. The Magnet Axis Shift (MAS) method was employed to effectively reduce the phase difference between the two axes. Additionally, motors used in high-speed railways actively employ regenerative braking during deceleration, leading to limitations posed by back electromotive force (BEMF). Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), we compared the performance of both Conventional PMa-SynRM and MAS PMa-SynRM. As a result, it was confirmed that the MAS PMa-SynRM is suitable for high-speed railway applications due to the improvement in torque density and reduction in BEMF, as demonstrated through the analysis. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a reduction method of circulating current for parallel connected inverters using proportional resonant (PR) control. Paralleled inverter has been increasingly applied in many power conversion systems such as renewable energy systems, motor drives, and energy storage systems. Modular inverters have several advantages of convenient maintenance and adjustable rating of power by the number of modules. However, a circulating current of paralleled inverter is generated due to the difference in the output parameters in each module. The circulating current distorts the quality of output current and deteriorates the performance of the parallel systems. To mitigate the problems, a reduction method is proposed using the PR controller of the paralleled connected inverter. The PR control method extracts the third harmonics of output current to reduce the circulating current of low-frequency component. The proposed method controls the low-frequency circulating current applying only controllers. The simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed control method. © 2023 The Korean Institute of Power Electronics.

In this paper, we analyze the indirect source coding problem with side information at both the encoder and decoder, as well as only at the decoder. We first derive structural properties of the two rate distortion functions (RDFs) for general abstract spaces and identify conditions under which the RDFs coincide. For multivariate jointly Gaussian random variables with square-error fidelity, we establish structural properties of the optimal test channels, show that side information at both the encoder and decoder does not reduce compression, and provide water-filling solutions using parallel Gaussian channel realizations. This paper uses a novel realization theory approach to establish achievability of the converse coding theorem lower bounds of the two RDFs. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, the economic viability of PV-battery systems integrated in pubic buildings is assessed, considering the various financial parameters met in countries of the Mediterranean region, such as systems cost and electricity tariffs. Specifically, a detailed techno-economic model that takes into consideration the flexibility of building loads is used to evaluate the profitability of PV-battery systems in the Mediterranean region. A sensitivity analysis is also conducted to study the effect of load flexibility level and financial parameters on the highest energy self-sufficiency that can be reached by the buildings in this region. The investigation in based on real electrical consumption measurements from public buildings and up-to-date electricity tariffs from three countries, i.e., Cyprus, Greece, and Italy. © 2023 IEEE.

Given a default distribution P and a set of test data x{M={x1, x2, ⋖s, xM this paper seeks to answer the question if it was likely that x{M was generated by P. For discrete distributions, the definitive answer is in principle given by Kolmogorov-Martin-Lof randomness. In this paper we seek to generalize this to continuous distributions. We consider a set of statistics T1(x{M), T2(x{M),ċs. To each statistic we associate its maximum entropy distribution and with this a universal source coder. The maximum entropy distributions are subsequently combined to give a total codelength, which is compared with - P(x{M). We show that this approach satisfied a number of theoretical properties. For real world data P usually is unknown. We transform data into a standard distribution in the latent space using a bidirectional generate network and use maximum entropy coding there. We compare the resulting method to other methods that also used generative neural networks to detect anomalies. In most cases, our results show better performance. © 2024 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

Modern industrial systems require frequent updates to their cyber and physical infrastructures, often demanding considerable reconfiguration effort. This paper introduces the industrial Cyber-Physical Systems Description Language, iCPS-DL, which enables autonomic reconfigurations for industrial Cyber-Physical Systems. The iCPS-DL maps an industrial process using semantics for physical and cyber-physical components, a state estimation model, and agent interactions. A novel aspect is using communication semantics to ensure live interaction among distributed agents. Reasoning on the semantic description facilitates the configuration of the industrial process control loop. A Water Distribution Networks domain case study demonstrates iCPS-DL's application. © 2023 IEEE.
