The IEC61499 is an open standard for distributed control and automation. The interface between control software and hardware or communications is achieved by means of the so-called Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB). This paper presents the guidelines to build communication SIFBs based on the emerging OMG DDS (Data Distribution Service) middleware. This specification implements in a very efficient way the Publisher/Subscriber paradigm providing significant QoS configuration possibilities. These characteristics make DDS suitable for implementing the communications among time-critical devices. By using these DDS-SIFBs within IEC61499 code generation tools, the designers of the distributed applications will be allowed to use this powerful technology in the new distributed applications.

In networked control systems (NCS), it is considered essential to design a robust controller such that the networked-system is stable against data dropouts during the network transfer. It has been shown that there is a critical data dropout rate over which the networked-system could be unstable; hence the desired task cannot be achieved. This paper shows that a desired task or trajectories can be still achieved even though there are feedback signal dropouts if the desired task is repetitive, as in the iterative learning control case. Specifically this paper shows how to design stochastic iterative learning control systems such that the networked-system with a repetitive task is robust stable against measurement and process noises and independent, intermittent output channel dropouts.

Data are the key to information, information provides knowledge and knowledge drives action. This, generally valid, idea has been applied in the majority of industrial systems via the so-called industrial communication technology. This paper describes the subject of industrial and building networking by means of a laboratory-based course developed at the university of patras - Greece. The course contains the main laboratory components that solidify the basic concepts of factory and building automation based on networking. The philosophy and pedagogical features of the course are first described, followed by the subject of the lecture and the laboratory practice.

The importance of modelling and simulation for the design of high quality industrial systems in a limited amount of time is generally acknowledged. Studying industrial systems by simulation enables the designer to study their dynamic behaviour and determine characteristics of the system. Due to the increasing complexity of industrial production systems, there exists a need for the development of formal approaches for their analysis and control. While there has been intensive research effort concerning theoretical aspects on control of discrete event systems, less work has been reported on practical implementation techniques with general acceptance. This paper focuses on Automata forms of modelling considered as the primary representation scheme of industrial plants. It also presents an overview of software tools with both educational and commercial orientation, necessary on the way to real applications in modern industry.

The mitigation of the impact of lightning and the individual control cabinet (ICC) protection of an approach lighting system (ALS) against over-voltage is the focus of this paper. It is the objective of this paper to evaluate three proposed ALS topologies and select the grounding configuration which optimally mitigates the high voltage and current levels caused by lightning, as well as to assess the over-voltage reduction capability of a metal-oxide varistor and its ability to provide protection to the individual control cabinet to prevent damage. Simulation of the grounding system of each ALS topology using a sensitivity study, which incorporates changes in conductor and environmental characteristics, is performed to determine the robustness of each ALS topology. Performance of a hands-on destructive test is also carried out to obtain practical results to compare with simulation results. This paper provides the foundation for improving the current ALS grounding and protective measures by updating standards and specifications to promote increased reliability and safety, as well as reduced equipment cost.

Simulation has a significant role in control engineering. It provides the best solution for educating new engineers without expensive experimentation on real systems. This paper presents a guide for constructing simulation models based on a recently presented hyper-class of hybrid automata. New type's definition is given jointly with some examples of guide's use. Guide is applicable in various programming environments and is oriented for undergraduate teaching purposes. Copyright © 2006 IFAC.

Understanding the effects of any change in the parameters of the various functional components in a wireless multimedia streaming chain is an absolute prerequisite for making good decisions towards efficient and effective end-to-end resource management and control. This paper focuses on the behavior evaluation with respect to processing resource consumption of the decoding functional component in a battery-operated wireless device. CPU cycle accurate measurements are provided along with the first order models, which capture the influence of selected encoding parameters to the decoder's resource consumption. Copyright 2006 ACM.

A MIMO (multi-input multi-output) radar system, unlike a standard phased-array radar, can choose freely the probing signals transmitted via its antennas to maximize the power around the locations of the targets of interest, or more generally to approximate a given transmit beampattern, and also to minimize the cross-correlation of the signals reflected back to the radar by the targets of interest. In this paper, we show how the above desirable features can be achieved by designing the covariance matrix of the probing signal vector transmitted by the radar. Moreover, in a numerical study, we show that the proper choice of the probing signals can significantly improve the performance of adaptive MIMO radar techniques. Additionally, we demonstrate the advantages of several MIMO transmit beampattern designs, including a beampattern matching design and a minimum sidelobe beampattern design, over their phased-array counterparts.

Due to the increasing complexity of industrial production systems, there exists a need for the development of efficient formal approaches for their analysis and control. Various methods have been proposed and examined from researchers, without being widely adopted for direct industrial use. in general, an industrial production line can be modelled as a Discrete Event System, but a more accurate representation would result, if we considered it as a real-time system. This paper presents a new mathematical abstraction for modelling real-time systems. in comparison with the conventional methods, the proposed method introduces new formulation parameters and handles variables in a different manner. It gives the opportunity to handle both discrete and real valued variables as inputs, outputs or both. A formal definition of the method is given and some examples of computations or runs of two typical examples are also presented. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.
