Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been selected as the basis for the new IEEE 802.11a standard for high-speed wireless local area networks (WLANs). We consider doubling the data rate of the IEEE 802.11a system by using a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system with two transmit and two receive antennas. We propose a preamble design for this MIMO system that is backward compatible with its single-input single-output (SISO) counterpart as specified by the IEEE 802.11a standard. Based on this preamble design, we devise a sequential method for the estimation of the carrier frequency offset (CFO), symbol timing, and channel response. We also provide a simple soft-detector to obtain the soft-information for the Viterbi decoder. Both the sequential parameter estimation method and the soft-detector are ideally suited for real-time implementations. The effectiveness of our methods is demonstrated via numerical examples.

The motion of a multi-body autonomous robot as well as of a train-like multi-articulated transportation vehicle is characterized by the deviation of the path of each intermediate vehicle from that of the leading one (off-tracking). In this paper, we make use of an innovative junction technique, which allows the kingpin to slide along the axis of the leading vehicle, something that proved to be very effective in reducing off-tracking. We propose two controllers for the elimination of the off-tracking phenomenon, in both robotic and transportation multi-articulated vehicles;the one is heuristically derived while the other one is based on steady-state off-tracking when an n-trailer vehicle moves on a circular trajectory. Simulation results for various cases, without and with the sliding kingpin system, showed that significant off-tracking reduction or even elimination can be achieved. Copyright © 2002 IFAC.

This paper presents a novel approach for the integration of industrial applications over LANs, WANs and the Internet, based on emerging proven and robust technologies. Industrial applications are traditionally viewed with reference to a four layer hierarchical model. Fieldbus control networks are used in order to interconnect field and control devices at the two lower layers of the industrial communication hierarchy. The OPC technology is utilized in order to provide a universal I/O driver/interface for heterogeneous control networks. Different OPC objects deal with real time data (OPC DA), historical data (HDA) as well as Alarms and Events. DCOM presents the middleware connectivity software for the seamless integration of applications locally over the LAN. Due to the DCOM lack in firewall friendliness, we propose the use of pure HTTP and the development of a special entity, the Web Gateway, that presents a single point of entry for all different users, e.g. service providers, for the provision of integrated services in a uniform way. This gateway takes into account user profiles and utilizes a dynamic parser for the generation of dynamic html according to user rights. The presented architecture has been the core of a pilot implementation. © 2002 IEEE.

Fieldbus networks are traditionally used in order to interconnect devices at the field level e.g. sensors and actuators, so that real time or critical time requirements are met concerning data transfer. In addition to traditional fieldbus traffic, novel applications, such as industrial multimedia applications, require the integration of IP traffic into fieldbus networks as well. This integration should be done so that the usual control traffic is not inhibited in any way by IP traffic, while on the other hand specific Quality of Service requirements are met by IP traffic. This paper deals with the different problems that are relevant to the integration of IP traffic into fieldbus networks. It focuses especially on the IP Mapper layer that need to be incorporated between the TCP/IP Stack and the Fieldbus Data Link Layer and performs the appropriate conversion of IP datagrams into fieldbus datagrams as well as the integration of the TCP/IP and the fieldbus communication models. Finally, it presents the way that these problems have been addressed for the integration of IP traffic over a specific fieldbus network. © 2002 IEEE.

Hard Platooning Versus Soft Platooning in Large-Scale Highway Transportation systems

The formation of a convoy of cars (platoon) by linking these electronically (soft platooning) or mechanically (hard platooning) are two of the most researched methods in highway transportation systems, particularly the first one that is the base of the Automated Highway systems. This paper focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of both systems and introduces the main technical problems of them. The need for new traffic rules is examined in the case of truck train travels on a multi-lane highway. The kingpin sliding technique is also proposed to face the off-tracking phenomenon of multi-articulated vehicles. Some conclusions from the comparison of the two systems are also given

This paper proposes an intelligent controller for the elimination of the off-tracking phenomenon, in both robotic and transportation multi- articulated vehicles. By using a sliding kingpin technique that allows articulated semi-trailers to follow closely the tractor's path, and taking into consideration the heuristic knowledge that stems from the driving practice and the tests' experience, a fuzzy rule-based controller has been developed to determine the sliding distance and the sliding rate of the kingpin mechanism. Simulation results for various cases, without and with the sliding kingpin system showed that off-tracking elimination is achieved to a significant degree through the use of intelligent controller.

The optical fiber control cable in substation would be destroyed due to the incorrect grounding method, when a lightning strokes the substation. The reason how to generate interference on an optical fiber cable by lightning stroke was analyzed. Different grounding methods were comprehensively discussed by numerical calculation method. The ideal grounding method for optical fiber cable is to ground the internal strengthening core and the outer metal sheath in the meantime. The electrical field intensity applied inside the optical fiber cable increases with the soil resistivity. The frequency of interference source is an important factor to affect the interference electrical field generated inside the optical fiber cable. The metal strengthening core has a high potential when an interference source is applied, so the stroke from it to the interior of the terminal equipment should be avoided. © 2000 IEEE.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for hybrid automata to be non-blocking and deterministic (local existence and uniqueness of executions, respectively) are, developed. The problem of global existence of executions is discussed in the context of Zeno hybrid automata, that is, hybrid automata that exhibit infinitely many discrete transitions in finite time.
