Mixed-Integer Optimal Control With Disjunctive Characteristic Time Constraints for Energy-Optimal Speed Planning

This paper considers the energy optimization problem with multiple time window constraints, which is motivated by the eco-driving of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in urban traffic. Timely crossing of signalized intersections defines complex spatio-temporal constraints, and multiple available open time windows introduce the discontinuous feasible domains of crossing times. The CAVs should select an open time-window for each intersection, determine the crossing times, and optimize the speed profiles accordingly, which turns out to be a hard-to-solve optimization problem. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a unifying approach that transforms the energy optimization problem into a novel mixed-integer optimal control problem with characteristic time constraints (MIOCP-CT). This approach facilitates the simultaneous optimization of open time windows, crossing times, and speed profiles within a single optimization problem, which can be solved by our proposed novel numerical solution procedure. The application of the proposed method in the eco-driving of CAVs approaching multiple signalized intersections demonstrates its performance within real-world urban driving cycles. The experimental results of the hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) demonstrate a superior energy-saving performance of 5.83% compared to existing methods, while also achieving real-time feasibility within 100 milliseconds. © 2015 IEEE.

The Hamming distance, a fundamental measure of dissimilarity between data points, plays a crucial role in various fields, including error detection, machine learning, and genomic sequence alignment, where it is commonly used for identifying mismatches in nucleotide or protein sequences. This work introduces two implementations for computing Hamming distances for sequence alignment: synchronous and asynchronous matrix-based approaches. While most existing implementations rely on vector-based methods due to their simplicity and ease of use, they are not efficient for large-scale data. Our work focuses on enhancing performance by introducing matrix-based implementations that significantly improve computational efficiency and scalability. Our asynchronous implementation showcases Julia for sequential task flow and PaRSEC for parameterized task graph execution models on homogeneous and heterogeneous architectures. CPU computations use INT8 GEMM from oneMKL, while GPU implementations employ Tensor/Matrix Core INT8 GEMM from cuBLAS/hipBLAS and 1-bit TensorOps GEMM capabilities from CUTLASS. For constructing bitmask matrices on GPUs, we develop both a naive CUDA implementation using global memory and an optimized implementation utilizing shared memory at the warp level, with the optimized version achieving a 5X speedup over the naive approach. The results demonstrate significant performance improvements, with the asynchronous matrix-based implementation achieving up to 284X speedup over the vector-based approach on CPUs, while the asynchronous GPU-enabled implementation on A100 GPUs delivers a 15X speedup compared to the CPU matrix-based approach and a three orders of magnitude improvement over the CPU vector-based approach. Furthermore, the asynchronous implementation of PaRSEC scales well on up to 256 nodes of Summit and Frontier. We investigate the application of large language models (LLMs), specifically GPT-4, to scenarios involving the tradeoff between privacy and utility in tabular data. Our approach entails prompting GPT-4 by transforming tabular data points into textual format, followed by the inclusion of precise sanitization instructions in a zero-shot manner. The primary objective is to sanitize the tabular data in such a way that it hinders existing machine learning models from accurately inferring private features while allowing models to accurately infer utility-related attributes. We explore various sanitization instructions. Notably, we discover that this relatively simple approach yields performance comparable to more complex adversarial optimization methods used for managing privacy-utility tradeoffs. Furthermore, while the prompts successfully obscure private features from the detection capabilities of existing machine learning models, we observe that this obscuration alone does not necessarily meet a range of fairness metrics. Nevertheless, our research indicates the potential effectiveness of LLMs in adhering to these fairness metrics, with some of our experimental results aligning with those achieved by well-established adversarial optimization techniques.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been widely regarded as the driving force behind the transformation of our daily lives. Home automation, which is a key application of IoT, is becoming more prominent with the advent of smart homes. This trend is particularly evident as a growing number of households are seeking to integrate smart home automation systems into their daily routines. The concept behind IoT is simple, it involves the connection of daily life devices to the internet and vice versa, thus enabling them to communicate and carry out tasks autonomously or through remote commands from the user. IoT's intervention homes is vast and has several aspects of applications. In this study we will be discussing a few of those applications including home automation for control of home appliances without physical presence, monitoring of garden plants and autonomous or semi-autonomous irrigation systems, home security and surveillance using sensors for real-time alerts and alarms in case of unauthorized access. © 2023 IEEE.

Miniaturized Electronically Steerable Parasitic Array Antenna

In this article we propose a miniaturized dual-band electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna. The antenna can generate up to two steerable beams. The beam-steering range of the proposed antenna is 360˚ in the azimuth plane. The antenna’s eual-band coverage includes the frequency ranges from 2.3 GHz to 2.53 GHz and from 2.9 GHz to 3.7 GHz. The antenna consists of six folded parasitic monopole elements surrounding an active conical element. The folded monopole element design offers three times lower antenna height than that of the conventional ESPAR antennas. The active element has conical shape and it is larger in length than the parasitic monopole elements, this enables the dual-band operation. Thus, the proposed design is not only smaller than the conventional ESPAR antennas but it also achieves dual-band operation. Despite its compact design, the antenna has a peak gain of 6.3 dBi, which is equivalent to the gain of conventional ESPAR antennas. These characteristics make the antenna a good candidate for next generation communication systems.

This paper considers the security of non-minimum phase systems, a typical kind of cyber-physical systems. The non-minimum phase systems are more vulnerable to zero-dynamics attack (ZDA) than minimum phase systems. This paper first demonstrates that the existing ZDA has the limitation of falling into local convergence, and then proposes an enhanced zero-dynamics attack (EZDA), which overcomes local convergence by diverging system data. Furthermore, this paper presents an autoregressive model which can build the data association between the original data and the forged data. By observing the fluctuations in state values, the presented model can detect not only ZDA, but also EZDA. Finally, numerical simulations and an application example are provided to verify the theoretical results. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Pb(Zr0.5, Ti0.5)O3 (PZT) is one of the ferroelectric materials used in the non-volatile memories. However, PZT usually suffers from fatigue that degrades the polarization with metallic electrodes. The high stability associated with Sr-O bonding reduces oxygen vacancies which in turn lessens fatigue and hence Sr in introduced at Pb site. In the present study (Pb0.65Sr0.35)(Zr0.5, Ti0.5)O3 (PSZT) ferroelectric thin films were successfully prepared by sol-gel method. The structural and morphological properties of the thin film were studied by x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The crystallization of the film was completed at 600°C of annealing and the root mean square roughness of the 300 nm film was around 4.5 nm. When Pb in Pb(Zr0.5, Ti0.5)O3 was substituted with 35% Sr, the coercive field increased and the remnant polarization reduced as compared to pure PZT. The films were ferroelectric at room temperature with the phase transition temperature at ∼375°K. The dielectric constant and the loss tangent at room temperature were 257 and 0.023, respectively at 100 kHz. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Risk-Aware Robot Control in Dynamic Environments Using Belief Control Barrier Functions

Ensuring safety for autonomous robots operating in dynamic environments can be challenging due to factors such as unmodeled dynamics, noisy sensor measurements, and partial observability. To account for these limitations, it is common to maintain a belief distribution over the true state. This belief could be a non-parametric, sample-based representation to capture uncertainty more flexibly. In this paper, we propose a novel form of Belief Control Barrier Functions (BCBFs) specifically designed to ensure safety in dynamic environments under stochastic dynamics and a sample-based belief about the environment state. Our approach incorporates provable concentration bounds on tail risk measures into BCBFs, effectively addressing possible multimodal and skewed belief distributions represented by samples. Moreover, the proposed method demonstrates robustness against distributional shifts up to a predefined bound. We validate the effectiveness and real-time performance (approximately 1 kHz) of the proposed method through two simulated underwater robotic applications: object tracking and dynamic collision avoidance. The focus of this research was to analyze current methods for online education for electrical and computer engineering undergraduate programs. From this research, an online model for virtual labs in undergraduate engineering is introduced. Experiential learning was exhibited by students through the hands-on experience with lab equipment combined with user feedback. Software used in this research to simulate traditional lab equipment affords institutions the opportunity to provide instructive methods to remote students who are unable to complete on-campus curricula. The devices used to remotely complete the virtual labs facilitated high-value lab practices and skills comparable to those presented in an on-campus lab. As examined during this research, the opportunity to operate virtual devices with the simulation software delivered an extensive laboratory experience with the capability for creating a teaching method for engineering concepts. Silicon and its native oxides (SiO2) have led the continuous development in the integrated circuits for decades. The excellent insulating properties of SiO2 and silicon/SiO2 interface quality were used as capacitor dielectrics in random-access memories (RAM's) and transistor gate dielectrics in complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS's), respectively, for the memory and logic devices. These are the core components and act as the heart of the semiconductor industry. However, reducing the thickness of SiO2 to increase the capacitance at a reduced lateral size resulted into high leakage current and large power consumption in the aforementioned high-density semiconductor devices. To overcome this concern, high-permittivity materials were considered in replacing the SiO2 to achieve high capacitance at a higher thickness. Numerous materials ranging from Al2O3 (k∼9) to perovskites (k∼102-104) are being actively investigated but Hafnium based compound high-k dielectric/metal gate (k∼10-15) captivate great attention and used for logic and memory devices. However, finding a real high-k material (k∼25-40) with silicon is a major challenge by itself as it requires an ideal interface with minimum defects. Therefore, with this article, we review the efforts in replacing SiO2 with higher-k dielectrics over the years to match the performance of processor from generation to generation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
