We demonstrate interconnected meshed optical networks as sensing-localization grid for earthquake early detection. We integrate noisy polarization evolution data induced by seven earthquakes, into a Waveplate model to enhance a machine-learning algorithm that accurately detects primary waves, improves urban safety and mimic real case scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Recently, third-order cumulants (TOCs) as a non-conventional odd-order statistics, has been introduced to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with the third-order nested array (TONA), which significantly increases the number of uniform degrees-of-freedom (uDOFs) and can even be comparable to the fourth-order cumulant approach. In this paper, through analysis of the second-order sum-difference co-array, a third-order sparse linear array (SLA) design scheme suitable for TOCs is proposed, which can extend the commonly used second-order SLAs to the third-order. By selecting an appropriate generator array, the derived third-order SLA has far more uDOFs than the existing TONA, greatly improving its DOA estimation accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

Autonomous Vehicle System (AVS) is rapidly advancing and is expected to completely transform the transportation industry, bringing about a new era of mobility. As digital data proliferation strains network resources, the demand for performing resource-intensive edge-assisted Deep Learning tasks in AVS with limited computational resources becomes increasingly challenging. The advent of 5G and future cellular networks (NextG) offers the promise of facilitating the seamless execution of these tasks. This research aims to diminish dataset size, in harmony with the integration capabilities of the Semantic and Flexible Open Radio Access Network (SEMO-RAN) framework, which is anticipated to reduce latency and refine resource allocation in vehicle image processing. The focus of this study is on optimizing image compression without compromising the accuracy of vehicle classification, leveraging esteemed Convolutional Neural Network models like YOLOv5. By employing Generative Adversarial Network compression and Wavelet Image Compression methods, our study achieves an impressive 81.82% reduction in data size while maintaining a 96.97% accuracy in classification tasks. This underscores the potential for significant efficiency gains in AVS through improved data management, supported by Digital Twins (DT), Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), and O-RAN. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, a high-precision three-dimensional (3-D) near-field (NF) localization method is proposed under an underdetermined case based on a symmetric enhanced nested array (SENA). Firstly, the symmetry of the array and the fourth-order cumulant (FOC) are utilized to construct the equivalent virtual far-field (FF) reception data. Then, a gridless sparse and parametric approach (SPA), combined with an l1-SVD based pairing procedure, is used to obtain estimates for two paired angles. Finally, a one-dimensional (1-D) spectral estimator is applied to obtain the estimate of range parameter. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2025 IEEE.

Most near-field (NF) localization algorithms cannot deal with the underdetermined case, while those which can are computationally expensive due to employment of fourth-order cumulants. In this work, a low-complexity solution is provided for underdetermined three-dimensional (3-D) NF localization, by employing second-order statistics with a tailored array configuration named two parallel centrally symmetric unfold coprime (TPSC) array. Its implementation can be divided into three stages. Firstly, the proposed algorithm constructs two cross-correlation matrices based on the received array data, which eliminates the non-linear range-related information of NF signals. Secondly, covariance and vectorization operations are applied to these two cross-correlation matrices to form a virtual array with extended aperture. Finally, the two-dimensional (2-D) angle parameters are estimated by the sparse and parametric approach (SPA) and a phase retrieval operation, and then the one-dimensional (1-D) range parameter is achieved by the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. One specific feature is that the estimated angle and range parameters are matched automatically. An analysis of the properties of the TPSC array is provided, and an optimal parameter configuration is derived, given that the total number of array elements is fixed. Simulation results demonstrate that the designed TPSC array can achieve underdetermined 3-D NF localization, and deliver enhanced estimation capabilities, surpassing those of established algorithms. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a framework designed to optimise energy consumption in vertical farming. It aims to maximise cost efficiency by balancing between minimising system operations during the electricity price peaks and the ability to trade capacity on the FCR market while also fulfilling constraints on the internal growing process. We consider that the vertical farming system has distributed control with a series of actuators controlled by various spatially distributed PLCs that we refer to as agents, to underline their independence. The paper conducts two experiments for a lO-agent system with a Pareto controller and a lOO-agent system with a Lagrangian approach and shows the balance between more cost-efficient momentary energy consumption control. © 2024 IEEE.

Millimeter-size carbon dioxide (CO2)-sensitive luminescence films emerge as practical sensors in miniaturized biomedical devices for measuring transcutaneous CO2. The intensity and lifetime of the excited luminophores in the film carry critical information about the CO2 values in the surrounding environment. It has been proven that lifetime-based measurement is superior to intensity-based measurement because of its robustness to confounding factors. Addressing the challenge of accurately determining the rapid nanosecond-scale lifetime of CO2-sensitive luminophores, we introduce a behavioral model using a time-correlated single photon counting system equipped with silicon photomultipliers. We included nonidealities such as dark count rate, afterpulsing, and crosstalk to this model. To recover the lifetime from photon counts, we applied denoising and fitting techniques. With hyperparameter optimization to determine various post-processing parameters, we improved accuracy in recovery for lifetime values ranging from 3 ns to 7 ns. Our results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and techniques in real-world scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.
