The placement of distributed generation (DG) units in power systems is an efficient way for energy loss reduction, especially when the penetration of DG in modern systems is growing due to their impacts on environmental sustainability. On the other hand, load variations and methods of electricity consumption affect energy losses amount. Therefore, power demand variations have an essential role in the determination of energy loss amount and optimal generation of DG. However, considering the variability of load level in the DG allocation problem increases the burden and computational time, and neglecting it causes the energy losses to be calculated inaccurately. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the effect of load patterns on renewable DG allocation plans in order to find out the importance of considering load variations in energy loss minimization via DG placement. The analysis has been conducted on 7-, 12-, 16-, 28-, 30-, 33-, 59-, 69-, 70-, 84-, and 119-bus distribution systems by a classic optimization tool named AMPL. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, we demonstrated upconversion imagers integrated with shortwave infrared photodetectors paired with an electron blocking layer. The use of electron blocking layer screened charge injection to prevent recombination in photosensitive layer. The characteristics of each electron blocking layer were analyzed in aspects of noise and detectivity. For the optimized device, the parasitic luminance in the dark was efficiently suppressed, and the photon-to-photon efficiency was increased. The electron blocking layer used in this work is generally applicable for upconversion imagers using different absorption and emitting materials. © 2023 IEEE.

Sequence modeling faces challenges in capturing long-range dependencies across diverse tasks. Recent linear and transformer-based forecasters have shown superior performance in time series forecasting. However, they are constrained by their inherent inability to effectively address long-range dependencies in time series data, primarily due to using fixed-size inputs for prediction. Furthermore, they typically sacrifice essential temporal correlation among consecutive training samples by shuffling them into mini-batches. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a fast and effective Spectral Attention mechanism, which preserves temporal correlations among samples and facilitates the handling of long-range information while maintaining the base model structure. Spectral Attention preserves long-period trends through a low-pass filter and facilitates gradient to flow between samples. Spectral Attention can be seamlessly integrated into most sequence models, allowing models with fixed-sized look-back windows to capture long-range dependencies over thousands of steps. Through extensive experiments on 11 real-world time series datasets using 7 recent forecasting models, we consistently demonstrate the efficacy of our Spectral Attention mechanism, achieving state-of-the-art results. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Operational costs are affected by energy losses of distribution systems, in which these losses are higher than those of the transmission system. The placement of distributed generation (DG) units in power distribution networks is an efficient way of energy loss reduction. Today, DG penetration in distribution systems is increasing because of the great effect of renewable energy resources on environmental sustainability. Power demand variations have an essential role in the determination of energy losses amount and optimal generation of DGs. Besides, considering the variability of load level in the DG allocation problem raises the burden and computational time substantially. Therefore, this paper proposes an effective DG allocation strategy for energy loss minimization in the presence of variable power demand. The evaluation of numerical results indicates the desired performance of the presented framework for the optimal placement of DG units in distribution systems with time-varying loads. © 2023 IEEE.

Load power can be changed by voltage fluctuation of network buses, in which reconfiguring the topology of distribution systems impacts the magnitude of bus voltages. Only a few papers have considered voltage-dependent loads in their reconfiguration models but introduced nonlinear formulations or highly approximated linear approaches. While nonlinear models can be solved by metaheuristic algorithms without guaranteeing the optimality of solutions or may be implemented by commercial nonlinear solvers, they require intensive and time-consuming computations. Moreover, linearized models are highly approximated by piecewise linear functions with many unknown parameters. Thus, this paper presents the effective design of the reconfiguration problems, including voltage dependency of loads, which can be solved using commercial linear solvers. The proposed models are precise enough to find accurate results for the reconfiguration problem and are adequately fast to converge to optimal solutions. The results show that the proposed solutions not only reduce active power losses significantly but increase the minimum voltage of the system effectively. © 2023 IEEE.

The diagnosis of faults in grid-connected photovoltaic (GCPV) systems is a challenging task due to their complex nature and the high similarity between faults. To address this issue, we propose a wrapper approach called the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) for feature selection. The main objective of SSA is to extract only the most important features from the raw data and eliminate unnecessary ones to improve the classification accuracy of supervised machine learning (SML) classifiers. Subsequently, the selected features are used to train supervised machine learning (SML) techniques in distinguishing between various operating modes. To evaluate the efficiency of the technique, we used healthy and faulty data from GCPV systems that have been injected with frequent faults, 20 different types of faults were introduced, including line-to-line, line-to-ground, connectivity faults, and those affecting the operation of bay-pass diodes. These faults present diverse conditions, such as simple and multiple faults in the PV arrays and mixed faults in both arrays. The performances of the developed SSA-SML are compared with those using principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel PCA (KPCA) based SML techniques through different criteria (i.e., accuracy, recall, precision, F1 score, and computation time). The experimental findings demonstrated that the proposed diagnosis paradigm outperformed the other techniques and achieved a high diagnostic accuracy (an average accuracy greater than 99%) while significantly reducing computation time. © 2023, The Author(s).

Microstructuring of cobalt (Co) thin films by UV laser irradiation

This work reports the microstructuring of cobalt (Co) thin films by high-energy UV pulsed laser irradiation. The parameters responsible for the efficient formation of such microstructures include laser fluence and film parameters. Cracks and island formations were observed for Co thin films deposited by RF sputtering. Such rough films rendered to produce inefficient microstructuring. To overcome this limitation, Co thin films were deposited by vacuum evaporation resulting in a smooth thin film compatible for laser-induced microstructuring. Two stages of conical patterning are discussed in terms of localized melting and abrupt condensation of the melted Co film owing to laser irradiation. An efficiency of 90% for laser-based microstructuring suggests that it is an efficient and non-invasive technique for fabricating nanostructures. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH, DE part of Springer Nature.

At present, ad hoc networks are getting a lot of attention, because they have many features that differ from the rest of the networks and because they are technically advanced. In routing protocols, the Vehicular Ad-hoc network (VANET) differ in performance because each protocol has different variables, such as variable density, speed, and traffic scenarios. In this work, we proposed topology-based routing namely Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol. The AODV protocol has been simulated in case of the movement of vehicles at a fixed velocity at 60km/h, and in case of randomly changing the vehicle's locations in the network. There are three parameters used to investigate the performance of the proposed AODV protocol which are packet delivery ratio, and overheads. The Simulation results show a significant decrease from 0.55 to 0.82 in the packet delivery ratio. On the other hand, the performance of the AODV protocol demonstrates effective communication for the VANETs. © 2023 IEEE.
