Penghu Islands (Pescadores), Taiwan's outlying islands surrounded by the sea, boast rich fishing resources that attract many anglers. However, successful fishing requires more than just gear: it involves understanding the varying fish species available in different locations, times, and climates, as well as adhering to relevant laws and regulations. To address these needs, this paper proposes an environmentally friendly fishing Android-based mobile device App specifically for the Penghu Islands. The proposed Android-based mobile device App aims to gather essential information, including local fishing regulations, aquatic safety tips, and important precautions. Its goal is to equip fishermen with the resources necessary to fish successfully and with peace of mind.

Unbalanced walking is increasingly common among older adults;therefore, routinely assessing the balance of older adults is crucial. The traditional method of assessing balance uses scales, requires the supervision of a physical therapist (PT), and is time-consuming. The present study, therefore, proposes a deep learning (DL) model architecture that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) network model to predict the scores of three scales, namely the Berg balance scale (BBS), timed up and go (TUG), and single-leg stance (SLS). The gait data of 15 m of walking were collected from seven inertial measurement units (IMUs) and input into the CNN-LSTM model for evaluation. The BBS and TUG only require the participants to wear two IMUs on the left and right thighs, respectively, for accurate predictions. The mean absolute errors (MAEs) of predicting the scores of the BBS and TUG are 1.2562 and 1.4016 s, respectively;however, the MAE of score predictions of SLS is higher than that of the BBS and TUG, indicating that gait data cannot be used for assessing SLS;moreover, participants only wear one IMU on the right calf for BBS and TUG evaluations, which yield MAEs of 1.4334 and 1.5229 s, respectively. The proposed system can quickly and accurately predict the scores of the BBS and TUG. The proposed model can assist PTs with making clinical decisions. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Sequence modeling faces challenges in capturing long-range dependencies across diverse tasks. Recent linear and transformer-based forecasters have shown superior performance in time series forecasting. However, they are constrained by their inherent inability to effectively address long-range dependencies in time series data, primarily due to using fixed-size inputs for prediction. Furthermore, they typically sacrifice essential temporal correlation among consecutive training samples by shuffling them into mini-batches. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a fast and effective Spectral Attention mechanism, which preserves temporal correlations among samples and facilitates the handling of long-range information while maintaining the base model structure. Spectral Attention preserves long-period trends through a low-pass filter and facilitates gradient to flow between samples. Spectral Attention can be seamlessly integrated into most sequence models, allowing models with fixed-sized look-back windows to capture longrange dependencies over thousands of steps. Through extensive experiments on 11 real-world time series datasets using 7 recent forecasting models, we consistently demonstrate the efficacy of our Spectral Attention mechanism, achieving state-of-the-art results.

Puerto Rico's electrical infrastructure powers over three million residents, yet energy consumption overcomes generation and continues to rise. This imbalance results in an unreliable power supply and frequent blackouts across the island. One solution to this issue is to increase generation capacity by adding new generating units and enhancing transmission networks, though this is expensive. Another approach is to promote the adoption of rooftop solar generation with storage systems through microgrids. Alternatively, demand-side management (DSM) offers a more cost-effective solution by regulating demand and reducing energy use at the consumer level. This paper explores the unique integration of power satisfaction within DSM strategies to reduce energy consumption while preserving user satisfaction. Utilizing an agent-based model to simulate household appliance behavior, we demonstrate how power satisfaction can reduce energy demand. This innovative approach offers a promising pathway toward a more resilient and sustainable energy future for Puerto Rico.

The 5th generation (5G) of cellular networks plays a vital role in providing wireless connectivity for a variety of market verticals and in meeting industry revolution (IR 4.0) targets. High capacity and improved quality of service are among the key performance parameters required by a variety of applications in 5G networks. To meet the high capacity goal, the mmWave carrier frequencies spectrum has been selected due to the enormous bandwidth available in this frequency spectrum. But, the radio wave propagation in mmWave poses a big challenge in achieving reliable radio link connectivity for 5G users. In this paper, we model mmWave radio frequency (RF) channel states for heterogeneous networks under different coverage and capacity scenarios. We use a statistical RF pathloss based probabilistic channel model as well as a Markovian RF channel state model to analyze the dynamic nature of mmWave channel states. We employ probabilistic model checking, a formal verification technique, to analyze these RF channel states models. We compare these models and provide useful insights into mmWave RF channel states of 5G HetNets. Moreover, to analyze the 5G end-user experience, we provide a reward-based quantitative analysis of handover distribution for mobile 5G users moving in a two-layer heterogeneous network.

The electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) has been used in various clinical studies and has become a key physiological signal for cochlear implants (CI). This study used four sensing electrodes to record ECAP signals based on the alternating polarity approach. An electrical field imaging (EFI) result based on the finite element method was used to obtain the interface impedance, then ECAP simulation results were computed and compared with a patient's clinical ECAP measurements. Preliminary modeling results show that the interface impedance obtained by this EFI-based technique can improve the simulation accuracy of the ECAP model. The ECAP modeling result will be compared with clinical ECAP measurements to validate the model in the full paper.

Signal Processing (SP) and Machine Learning (ML) rely on good math and coding knowledge, in particular, linear algebra, probability, trigonometry, and complex numbers. A good grasp of these relies on scalar algebra learned in middle school. The ability to understand and use scalar algebra well, in turn, relies on a good foundation in basic arithmetic. Because of various systemic barriers, many students are not able to build a strong foundation in arithmetic in elementary school. This leads them to struggle with algebra and everything after that. Since math learning is cumulative, the gap between those without a strong early foundation and everyone else keeps increasing over the school years and becomes difficult to fill in college. In this article we discuss how SP faculty, students, and professionals can play an important role in starting, and participating in, university-run, or other, out-of-school math support programs to supplement students’ learning. Two example programs run by the authors, CyMath at Iowa State and Algebra by 7th Grade (Ab7G) at Purdue, and one run by the Actuarial Foundation, are described. We conclude with providing some simple zero-cost suggestions for public schools that, if adopted, could benefit a much larger number of students than what out-of-school programs can reach. A vehicle has a license plate and can be identified by the license number attached to the vehicle plate. For detection and recognition, multimedia sensors can be used so that it requires a vehicle tracking application that has a vehicle monitoring function and has implications for various fields. One of them is a multimedia sensor that requires an optimal design and method in the form of the number of multimedia sensors to be used, the placement of the multimedia sensor positions and solutions in the event of a system failure. To achieve multimedia sensor performance, research on multimedia sensors is carried out using a camera type with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) technology which is similar to a pair of right and left eyes to see an object. The objects detected were 2 cars, where the car passed the camera sensor at a speed of 10-15 km/hour 20 times. Changes in the distance of the vehicle to the camera affect the disparity value and the object's accuracy value, namely and the object's Accuracy value of the minimum disparity value of 6.20×106 of 16.88×109. © 2022 ACM.

Partial discharge (PD) is a widespread phenomenon instigated in power transformer (PT) insulation systems. PDs are triggered by voids that vary in size and position within the PT insulation. The electrical characteristics of those damaging, PD-causing cavities must be well understood, to accelerate the development of advanced PD detection techniques. Thus, the impact of varying the radius and position of spherical air voids on the characteristics of PDs in PTs is examined using a 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) model designed in COMSOL Multiphysics. The spherical voids are positioned between two windings of a 512 kV, three-phase (3φ ) PT. The peak electric field (EF) and aggregate energy in the FEA model are used in conjunction with laboratory measurements of the apparent discharge magnitude, for detailed analysis of Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PET-G)-based cylindrical voids with different heights. Simulations demonstrate that the inception of PD activity in the PT model occurs for spherical voids with a radius exceeding 1 mm. Furthermore, the most severe PDs occur within the press-board insulation, adjacent to the uppermost part of the innermost windings. Experiments demonstrate that a significant increase in PD activity was observed for PET-G-based cylindrical voids with heights exceeding 1 mm. © 2022 IEEE.

Detection of unknown but concerned objects such as diverse unknown suspicious objects in the sea area is a critical problem in military defense applications, but the problem is challenging because 1) a pre-trained detector cannot easily detect unknown but concerned objects, 2) it detects too many unconcerned objects such as usual objects in the coastal land area, and 3) we cannot easily establish a well-performing discriminator to divide the detected objects into unknown and known objects, as well as concerned and unconcerned objects because the unknown objects are not available, whereas the concerned and unconcerned objects are not clearly defined. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a real-time framework for unknown but concerned object detection in maritime environments by integrating object detection, segmentation, and out-of-distribution (OOD) detection techniques. In our framework, an object detector finds all object-like foregrounds by setting a low threshold and a segmentation deep-learning network filters out unconcerned foregrounds detected in the coastal land area. After that, to discriminate known or unknown objects among concerned objects detected in the sea area, a discriminator performs unsupervised OOD detection using bisecting K-means clustering. To boost the performance of the proposed framework, we apply a pre-processing scheme and a contrastive separation loss for segmentation. The proposed framework achieves a high detection rate of unknown but concerned objects with minimal detection of unconcerned objects (i.e., minimal false positives), surpassing baseline methods and demonstrating potential for enhanced maritime safety and security.
