While deep learning-based Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis has recently made significant advancements, particularly in predicting the conversion of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD based on MRI images, there remains a critical gap in research regarding the group robustness of the diagnosis. Although numerous studies pointed out that deep learning-based classifiers may exhibit poor performance in certain groups by relying on unimportant attributes, this issue has been largely overlooked in the early diagnosis of MCI to AD conversion. In this paper, we present the first comprehensive investigation of the group robustness in the early diagnosis of MCI to AD conversion using MRI images, focusing on disparities in accuracy between groups, specifically sMCI and pMCI individuals divided by age. Our experiments reveal that standard classifiers consistently underperform for certain groups across different architectures, highlighting the need for more tailored approaches. To address this, we propose a novel method, dubbed DEAL (DEcoupled classifier with Adaptive Linear modulation), comprising two key components: (1) a linear modulation of features from the penultimate layer, incorporating easily obtainable age and cognitive indicative tabular features, and (2) a decoupled classifier that provides more tailored decision boundaries for each group, further improving performance. Through extensive experiments and evaluations across different architectures, we demonstrate the efficacy of DEAL in improving the group robustness of the MCI to AD conversion prediction. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

This study proposes a data alignment design for sensor fusion of an optical target (OT) and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to track the trajectory of a handheld tool for robot programming by demonstration (PbD). A novel method is proposed for coordinate and temporal alignment between the OT and the IMU sensor to increase tracking accuracy. The IMU measurements are aligned with the corresponding angular velocities and accelerations derived from the OT to calibrate the IMU-OT relationship. Global and local optimizations are combined to reduce the computation time for the temporal alignment and coordinate calibration. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides improved calibration results with shorter calculation time compared with the two existing methods. The sensor fusion experiments verify the accuracy of trajectory tracking of 1.3 mm using the calibration result, an improvement from 1.4 mm of the data alignment using ruler measurement. Integrated PbD experiments using a 6-DOF manipulator were carried out to evaluate the proposed method. The manipulator imitated the hand motion of a bottle transfer task with a trajectory error of 0.66 mm. Practical robotic experiments demonstrate that the method is suitable for robot programming applications. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Education about health sciences has historically been limited in the curriculum of health professionals and largely inaccessible to the public. In practice, most of the health science education is still running conventionally. Supposedly with the advancement of technology and the use of the internet everywhere, learning such as e-learning can be important, especially in the health sector. Until this research was conducted, only 514 academic documents about e-learning in health sciences were found for 20 years from 2001 to 2020, obtained in searching on the Scopus database. This study presents a comprehensive overview of studies related to E-learning in the Health Sciences sector. This study uses bibliometric analysis and indexed digital methods to map scientific publications throughout the world. This research employs the Scopus database to gather information, as well as the Scopus online analysis tool and Vosviewer to show the bibliometric network. The method consists with five stages: determining search keywords, initial search results, refinement of search results, initial compilation, and data analysis. Among the most published and indexed articles by Scopus, papers published by researchers in the United States have the highest number of publications (80), followed by United Kingdom (63) and Australia with 45 academic publications. The processed data shows the pattern and trend of increasing the number of international publications in E-learning in Health Sciences field, which Scopus index. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. Accurate short-term electricity price forecasting (STEPF) is critical for efficient energy market operations, guiding investment strategies, resource allocation, and consumer behavior. This study introduces a hybrid deep learning approach specifically designed to improve STEPF accuracy by leveraging historical Hourly Ontario Energy Price (HOEP) data from 2017 to 2019. The model integrates advanced techniques, including data preprocessing and denoising through a Stacked Denoising Autoencoder (SDAE), along with enhanced temporal modeling via Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) networks. By capturing the complex dynamics inherent in electricity pricing data, the proposed hybrid model significantly enhances forecasting accuracy. Trained on data from 2017 and 2018, with 2019 used for testing, the model achieves a strong correlation coefficient (R = 99.86%) and substantially lowers forecasting errors. Comparative evaluations against established forecasting methods highlight the model's superior performance. This work demonstrates the practical value of deep learning techniques in the energy sector, particularly in responding to the volatility of demand and supply in real-time electricity markets.

Stroke is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and nearly 80% of stroke survivors suffer from upper-limb hemiparesis. Myoelectric exoskeletons can restore dexterity and independence to stroke survivors with upper-limb hemiparesis. However, the ability of patients to dexterously control myoelectric exoskeletons is limited by an incomplete understanding of the electromyographic (EMG) hallmarks of hemiparesis, such as muscle weakness and spasticity. Here we show that stroke survivors with upper-limb hemiparesis suffer from delayed voluntary muscle contraction and delayed muscle relaxation. We quantified the time constants of EMG activity associated with initiating and terminating voluntary hand grasps and extensions for both the paretic and non-paretic hands of stroke survivors. We found that the initiation and termination time constants were greater on the paretic side for both hand grasps and hand extensions. Notably, the initiation time constant during hand extension was approximately three times longer for the paretic hand than for the contralateral non-paretic hand (0.618 vs 0.189 s). We also show a positive correlation between the initiation and termination time constants and clinical scores on the Modified Ashworth Scale. The difficulty stroke survivors have in efficiently modulating their EMG presents a challenge for appropriate control of assistive myoelectric devices, such as exoskeletons. This work constitutes an important step towards understanding EMG differences after stroke and how to accommodate these EMG differences in assistive myoelectric devices. This research demonstrates the improvement in antenna gain by utilizing an EBG reflector. The EBG reflector includes a unit cell with grooves shaped like the letters M and W to mitigate surface waves at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The suggested EBG reflector is constructed on an FR-4 substrate exhibiting a uniform dielectric constant of 4.3, a loss tangent of 0.025, and a thickness of 1.6 mm. Furthermore, the impact of boosting the antenna gain can be analyzed by the reflection phase diagram, which exhibits values ranging from +90° to -90° at the resonant frequency of the reflector. The proposed EBG reflector comprises 5x5 unit cells. The testing results of the reflector's performance, when integrated with a general dipole antenna, indicate that it can effectively respond to the resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz, with a |S 11 | level below -10 dB within the frequency range of 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHz, thereby adequately covering the IEEE 802.11 b/g/n band. The suggested EBG reflector exhibits a gain of around 6.5 dBi at 2.45 GHz, indicating its efficacy in enhancing gain relative to the standard PEC reflector. Moreover, the radiation pattern is also directional.

Transparent conductive oxides exhibit attractive optical nonlinearity with ultrafast response and giant refractive index change near the epsilon-near-zero(ENZ) wavelength, originating from the intraband dynamics of conduction electrons. The optical nonlinearity of ENZ materials has been explained by using the overall-effective-mass and the overall-scattering-time of electrons in the extended Drude model. However, their response to optical excitation is yet the last building block to complete the theory. In this paper, the concept of thermal energy is theoretically proposed to account for the total energy of conduction electrons exceeding their thermal equilibrium value. The time-varying thermal energy is adopted to describe the transient optical response of indium-tin-oxide(ITO), a typical ENZ material. A spectrally-resolved femtosecond pump-probe experiment was conducted to verify our theory. By correlating the thermal energy with the pumping density, both the giant change and the transient response of the permittivity of ITO can be predicted. The results in this work provide a new methodology to describe the transient permittivities of ENZ materials, which will benefit the design of ENZ-based nonlinear photonic devices.

Advanced battery management systems (ABMSs) rely on mathematical models to ensure high battery safety and performance. One of the key tasks of a BMS is state estimation. In the following, we consider a single lithium-ion cell described with a dual polarization equivalent circuit model. To consider a realistic scenario, where the parameters have been identified from experimentally collected data, both parametric and measurement uncertainties are taken into account in the model. In particular, unknown but bounded uncertainties are assumed. In this setup, we address state estimation through a set-based approach using Constrained Zonotopes (CZ). Due to the model nonlinearities, a method able to propagate CZ through nonlinear mappings is demanded. Within this context, mean value and first-order Taylor CZ-based extensions were proposed which, however, might lead to conservative overestimation due to the sensitivity to the wrapping and dependency effects inherited from interval arithmetic. In the following, we suggest the use of DC programming as an alternative. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated in simulation for the considered Li-ion model.

Foreign Exchange market is the world's largest daily currency turnover. Two of the popular currencies Euro and Pound sterling traded against the US Dollar. Since the Russia and Ukraine war started in February 2022, their exchange rates decrease to the lowest rate ever. Even though the general trend is bearish, several daily candles increase for some days making challenges for forex analysts. To solve this problem, classification is applied. The data is labeled downward and upward. By utilizing Linear Kernel and Radial Basis Function (RBF) Kernel-based Support Vector Machines (SVM), the candle direction can be classified and optimized by tuning the Hyperparameters. The accuracy of candle direction classifications are highly improved. After tuning, in general, classification using Linear Models can outperform RBF Models. The best accuracy found on the Pound sterling against US Dollar by using the Linear model is 98.11% and the accuracy becomes 100% on data testing at a ratio of 70:30. Whilst for the Euro against the US Dollar, the best accuracy found the same for both Linear and RBF models on a ratio of 80:20 at 97.53%. However, on data testing, it decreases to 94.51% for Linear Model and 93.41% using RBF Model. The implication of this study is SVM can successfully classify candle direction on pairs in the Forex Market that are affected by a big event that comes for such a long period as long as the hyperparameter is tuned. © 2022 IEEE.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a transformative technology using the passive beamforming capabilities to create the programmable wireless environments. However, the control overhead is a challenging issue. The system needs to deliver the high-precision reflection coefficients to the RIS controller, for adjusting the phase shifts of the numerous RIS elements. Therefore, we propose a Spirograph-based discrete beamdirection strategy, which selects a set of non-uniformly distributed beam directions based on the generic patterns generated by the Spirograph (SG). We evaluate the achievable data rate and the number of controlling bits of SG-based method. We compare the SG-based method, the ideal continuous phase-shift method, and the SISO method. Simulation results show that with the properly-selected discrete beam directions, the SG-based method can achieve a comparable data rate as the ideal method, while having a lower control overhead.
