Counterfactuals, or modified inputs that lead to a different outcome, are an important tool for understanding the logic used by machine learning classifiers and how to change an undesirable classification. Even if a counterfactual changes a classifier's decision, however, it may not affect the true underlying class probabilities, i.e. the counterfactual may act like an adversarial attack and "fool" the classifier. We propose a new framework for creating modified inputs that change the true underlying probabilities in a beneficial way which we call Trustworthy Actionable Perturbations (TAP). This includes a novel verification procedure to ensure that TAP change the true class probabilities instead of acting adversarially. Our framework also includes new cost, reward, and goal definitions that are better suited to effectuating change in the real world. We present PAC-learnability results for our verification procedure and theoretically analyze our new method for measuring reward. We also develop a methodology for creating TAP and compare our results to those achieved by previous counterfactual methods. Copyright 2024 by the author(s)

Roads are one of the most essential element in maintaining the socioeconomic backbone of any region due to their facilitation of mobility, connectivity, social integration, and regional development. For growing urban cities like Karachi, Pakistan, accurate and precise monitoring of road health is vital for economic and infrastructural growth. This paper presents the design of a highly cost-effective, power-efficient, IoT-enabled Road Health Monitoring System (RHMS) for real-time quantification of the International Roughness Index (IRI). The study details the node architecture, including essential modules, sensors, and BMS, as well as their integration and deployment in the field. Results of the conducted experiment are presented for IRI calculation, power consumption, and device reliability. The developed system can be deployed on a large scale in dense urban regions with intricate transportation networks to realistically analyze road conditions, identify efficient routes, and address repair demands, thereby enabling the construction of sustainable socio-political policies for urban planning.

Awareness of neurodiversity in higher education is at the rise but institutions struggle to set up comprehensive frameworks that can effectively accommodate neurodivergent students. This deficiency undercuts attempts to establish inclusive learning settings, leaving students to deal with issues like academic stress, social isolation, and a lack of resources. This study peruse creative ways to bridge this gap by using technology to promote inclusivity, facilitate communication, and improve the accommodation process. We created an app prototype using a human-centered design methodology with the goals of raising awareness, easing accommodations, and boosting faculty-student communication. The findings provide beneficial data for educators, policymakers, and developers intending to use technology to build supportive and equitable learning environments.
