This review paper examines the concept and advancements in the evolving landscape of Dual-functional Radar Communication (DFRC) systems. Traditionally, radar and communication systems have functioned independently, but current research is actively investigating the integration of these functionalities into a unified platform. The paper discusses the motivations behind the development of DFRC systems, the challenges involved, and the potential benefits they offer. A discussion on the performance bounds for DFRC systems is also presented. The paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research on DFRC systems covering various design aspects, resource allocation strategies, and future research directions. Additionally, we explore potential application scenarios for these joint communication and sensing systems, offering a comprehensive perspective on the multifaceted landscape of DFRC technology. This paper also presents a tutorial-style signal model for integrated sensing and communication tailored for newcomers to the field. © 2025 IEEE. All rights reserved.

Towards Automated Functional Equation Proving: A Benchmark Dataset and A Domain-Specific In-Context Agent

Automated Theorem Proving (ATP) faces significant challenges due to the vast action space and the computational demands of proof generation. Recent advances have utilized Large Language Models (LLMs) for action selection in ATP, but these methods often require substantial computational resources. This study introduces the Functional Equation Automated Solver (FEAS), an agent that builds on the COPRA in-context learning framework within the Lean environment. FEAS innovates by refining prompt generation and response parsing mechanisms, integrating domain-specific heuristics for functional equations, and introducing the FunEq dataset—a rigorously curated collection of functional equation problems categorized into three difficulty levels. The agent’s performance is evaluated against established baselines using this dataset, demonstrating improvements in theorem proving accuracy, particularly with the integration of functional equation-specific heuristics. Our results highlight the effectiveness of FEAS in generating and formalizing high-level proof strategies into Lean proofs, emphasizing the potential of tailored approaches in domain-specific ATP challenges. © 2024, CC BY.

2.3- μ m deep UV micro-LEDs fabricated by self-aligned selective thermal oxidation process

Recently, techniques for fabricating micro-sized deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (DUV LEDs) have been gaining attention. In this work, we propose a selective thermal oxidation (STO) process to fabricate ultra-small DUV micro-LEDs. Annealed in the air at 900°C for 2 h, the p-layers without SiO protection are oxidized into insulating oxides, and oxygen penetrates into parts of the quantum wells. In contrast, the patterned SiO protects the LED structure in the pixel regions. Therefore, micro-LED pixels are formed by the patterned SiO and thermal oxidation process rather than the conventional reactive ion etching. The formed oxide in the unprotected region can function as the insulation layer between p-n electrodes. Meanwhile, the boundary between the pixel and the surrounding oxide is naturally formed during thermal oxidation, which is a "self-aligned" process. Dielectric deposition, precise lithography alignment, and aperture etching in the conventional process are no longer required in STO-based micro-LED fabrication, which reduces production complexity and cost. Based on the STO process, we have achieved 2.3-µm DUV micro-LED standalone pixels and arrays with a 270-nm emission wavelength. The standalone DUV micro-LED is possibly the smallest reported in the literature to date, which has a low-operation voltage of 4.9 and 6.75 V at 10 and 1000 A/cm. Meanwhile, the fabricated DUV micro-LED arrays show leakage current density 4 × 10 A/cm at -5 V and a peak EQE of 0.77% under unpackaged conditions. We hope this work provides a new insight into micro-LED fabrication and further promotes future performance growth of DUV LEDs.

Enhancing Geometric Ontology Embeddings for EL++ with Negative Sampling and Deductive Closure Filtering

Ontology embeddings map classes, relations, and individuals in ontologies into Rn, and within Rn similarity between entities can be computed or new axioms inferred. For ontologies in the Description Logic EL++, several embedding methods have been developed that explicitly generate models of an ontology. However, these methods suffer from some limitations;they do not distinguish between statements that are unprovable and provably false, and therefore they may use entailed statements as negatives. Furthermore, they do not utilize the deductive closure of an ontology to identify statements that are inferred but not asserted. We evaluated a set of embedding methods for EL++ ontologies based on high-dimensional ball representation of concept descriptions, incorporating several modifications that aim to make use of the ontology deductive closure. In particular, we designed novel negative losses that account both for the deductive closure and different types of negatives. We demonstrate that our embedding methods improve over the baseline ontology embedding in the task of knowledge base or ontology completion. © 2024, CC BY.

Ransomware is considered one of the most threatening *** solutions have focused mainly on discriminating ransomware by analyzing the apps themselves,but they have overlooked possible ways of hiding ransomware apps and making them difficult to be detected and then ***,this paper proposes a novel ransomware hiding model by utilizing a block-based High-Efficiency Video Coding(HEVC)steganography *** main idea of the proposed steganography approach is the division of the secret ransomware data and cover HEVC frames into different *** that,the Least Significant Bit(LSB)based Hamming Distance(HD)calculation is performed amongst the secret data’s divided blocks and cover ***,the secret data bits are hidden into the marked bits of the cover HEVC frame-blocks based on the calculated HD *** main advantage of the suggested steganography approach is the minor impact on the cover HEVC frames after embedding the ransomware while preserving the histogram attributes of the cover video frame with a high *** is due to the utilization of an adaptive steganography cost function during the embedding *** proposed ransomware hiding approach was heavily examined using subjective and objective tests and applying different HEVC streams with diverse resolutions and different secret ransomware apps of various *** obtained results prove the efficiency of the proposed steganography approach by achieving high capacity and successful embedding process while ensuring the hidden ransomware’s undetectability within the video *** example,in terms of embedding quality,the proposed model achieved a high peak signal-to-noise ratio that reached 59.3 dB and a low mean-square-error of 0.07 for the examined HEVC ***,out of 65 antivirus engines,no engine could detect the existence of the embedded ransomware app.

Irrigated agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions is a vital contributor to the global food supply. However, these regions endure massive evaporative losses that are compensated by exploiting limited freshwater resources. To increase water-use efficiency in these giga-scale operations, plastic mulches are utilized;however, their non-biodegradability and eventual land-filling renders them unsustainable. In response, we have developed superhydrophobic sand (SHS) mulching technology that is comprised of sand grains or sandy soils with a nanoscale coating of paraffin wax. Here, we investigate the effects of 1 cm-thick SHS mulching on the evapotranspiration and phenotypic responses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants as a model system under normal and reduced irrigation inside controlled growth chambers. Experimental results reveal that under either irrigation scenario, SHS mulching suppresses evaporation and enhances transpiration by 78% and 17%, respectively relative to the unmulched soil. Comprehensive phenotyping revealed that SHS mulching enhanced root xylem vessel diameter, stomatal aperture, stomatal conductance, and chlorophyll content index by 21%, 25%, 28%, and 23%, respectively, in comparison with the unmulched soil. Consequently, total fruit yields, total dry mass, and harvest index increased in SHS-mulched plants by 33%, 20%, and 16%, respectively compared with the unmulched soil. We also provide mechanistic insights into the effects of SHS mulching on plant physiological processes. These results underscore the potential of SHS for realizing food–water security and greening initiatives in arid regions. © 2022 The Authors. Reasoning over knowledge bases such as Semantic Web ontologies enables the discovery of new facts from existing knowledge. Knowledge-enhanced machine learning has motivated the development of neuro-symbolic reasoners, which enable faster but approximate computation of new facts or entailments. Neuro-symbolic methods generate vector representations (embeddings) of entities in a knowledge base. We analyze some ontology embedding methods, by implementing them as neuro-symbolic reasoners and evaluating their predictive performance on the datasets and tasks provided by the Semantic Reasoning Evaluation Challenge 2023. We explore two types of embedding methods: graph-based and model-theoretic. Regarding graph-based embeddings, we evaluated the impact of different combinations of graph representation of ontologies with knowledge graph embedding methods. For model-theoretic embeddings, which create models for theories, we evaluate the impact of using several models, enabling approximate semantic entailment. © 2023 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

Streamlining plant disease diagnosis with convolutional neural networks and edge devices

In addressing labor-intensive process of manual plant disease detection, this article introduces an innovative solution—the lightweight parallel depthwise separable convolutional neural network (PDSCNN) coupled with a hybrid ridge regression extreme learning machine classifier. This combined approach automates plant disease classification, significantly expediting the learning process and reducing computational complexity. The PDSCNN model excels in feature capture, boasting a mere 9 layers and 0.053 million parameters, resulting in exceptional computational efficiency. On top of that, the classification performances of traditional ELM increased by introducing a hybrid ridge ELM model. Its accelerated operations, reduced memory usage, and optimized parallel processing render it lightweight and ideal for edge devices. The proposed framework exhibits remarkable efficacy, showcasing a precision of 95.76%, a recall of 89.29%, an F1-score of 91.25%, an accuracy of 94.22%, and an AUC of 99.72%. Moreover, training and testing times clock in at just 0.2314 and 0.0259 s, respectively. A comparative analysis against state-of-the-art transfer learning methods underscores its real-time analytical prowess. To demonstrate real-world applicability, we successfully validated our model on the Jetson Nano hardware, making it suitable for resource-constrained settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Alleviate sidewall damage of InGaN green micro-LEDs by atomic layer etching

In this work, atomic layer etching (ALE) technology is demonstrated to alleviate the sidewall damage generated during the mesa etching process of InGaN micro-LEDs. TEM images verify the existence of the sidewall damage and its mitigation after 200-cycle ALE sidewall treatment. The defect-related leakage current density significantly decreases from 3 × 10 to 7 × 10 A/cm at -20 V bias through sidewall treatment. InGaN green micro-LEDs (11 µm) with ALE sidewall treatment show a more than 10% enhancement in external quantum efficiency compared to untreated reference devices. This work provides a new, to our knowledge, perspective on addressing the sidewall effect in micro-LEDs, aiding the realization of high-efficiency InGaN micro-LEDs in the near term.

This paper presents a voltage control method for active distribution systems, which is based on the operation of on-load tap changers of the distribution transformers, in conjunction with a demand response program. Both on-load tap changers and demand response operations are initiated when pre-determined voltage criteria are fulfilled, making the approach completely decentralized. Several scenarios considering time-varying consumption of loads and variable electricity production from distributed generation units are simulated. The proposed voltage control method is tested against those scenarios, whereas also severe contingencies, such as the sudden loss of a distributed generation unit, are additionally considered. The simulation results show that the proposed method efficiently controls voltage within the permissible distribution levels, even under extreme system conditions. © 2022 IET Conference Proceedings.
