A planar graphene metasurface with rectangular holes, which is capable of supporting a dynamically tunable Fano resonance at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, is proposed. The rectangular hole is patterned asymmetrically within the metasurface's unit cell to “brighten” an originally-dark quadrupolar surface plasmon mode. Fano resonance is achieved via the destructive interference of this mode with a dipolar surface plasmon. The spectral location and line shape of the Fano resonance can be dynamically tuned via a gate voltage applied to the metasurface to change graphene's optical properties. The dynamic tunability of the Fano resonance suggests the applicability of the proposed metasurface in designing THz wave modulators and band-pass filters.

This paper considers the average symbol error probability of square Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) coherent signaling over flat fading channels subject to additive generalized Gaussian noise. More specifically, a generic closed-form expression in terms of the Fox H function and the bivariate Fox H function is offered for the extended generalized-K fading case. Simplifications for some special fading distributions such as generalized-K fading, Nakagami-m fading, and Rayleigh fading and special additive noise distributions such as Gaussian and Laplacian noise are then presented. Finally, the mathematical formalism is illustrated by some numerical examples verified by computer based simulations for a variety of fading and additive noise parameters.

We study the throughput capacity region of the Gaussian multi-access (MAC) fading channel with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver and at the transmitters (CSI-TR), at low power regime. We show that it has a multidimensional rectangle structure and thus is simply characterized by single user capacity points. More specifically, we show that at low power regime, the boundary surface of the capacity region shrinks to a single point corresponding to the sum-rate maximizer and that the coordinates of this point coincide with single user capacity bounds. Using the duality of Gaussian MAC and broadcast channels (BC), we provide a simple characterization of the BC capacity region at low power regime.

This paper presents a digital implementation of a 3rd order chaotic system using the Euler approximation. Short-term predictability is studied in relation to system precision, Euler step size and attractor size and optimal parameters for maximum performance are derived. Defective bits from the native chaotic output are neglected and the remaining pass the NIST SP. 800-22 tests without post-processing. The resulting optimized pseudorandom number generator has throughput up to 17.60 Gbits/s for a 64-bit design experimentally verified on a Xilinx Virtex 4 FPGA with logic utilization less than 1.85%.

This article describes the implementation of four different machine learning techniques for vehicle classification in a dual ultrasonic/passive infrared traffic flow sensors. Using k-NN, Naive Bayes, SVM and KNN-SVM algorithms, we show that KNN-SVM significantly outperforms other algorithms in terms of classification accuracy. We also show that some of these algorithms could run in real time on the prototype system.

In this paper, a multiple relay selection scheme for two-way relaying cognitive radio network is investigated. We consider a cooperative Cognitive Radio (CR) system with spectrum sharing scenario using Amplify-and-Forward (AF) protocol, where licensed users and unlicensed users operate on the same frequency band. The main objective is to maximize the sum rate of the unlicensed users allowed to share the spectrum with the licensed users by respecting a tolerated interference threshold. A practical low complexity heuristic approach is proposed to solve our formulated optimization problem. Selected numerical results show that the proposed algorithm reaches a performance close to the performance of the optimal multiple relay selection scheme either with discrete or continuous power distributions while providing a considerable saving in terms of computational complexity. In addition, these results show that our proposed scheme significantly outperforms the single relay selection scheme.

In this work, we consider so-called nonredundant inhibitory rules, containing an expression “attribute:F value” on the right- hand side, for which the number of misclassifications is at most a threshold γ. We study a dynamic programming approach for description of the considered set of rules. This approach allows also the optimization of nonredundant inhibitory rules relative to the length and coverage. The aim of this paper is to investigate an additional possibility of optimization relative to the number of misclassifications. The results of experiments with decision tables from the UCI Machine Learning Repository show this additional optimization achieves a fewer misclassifications. Thus, the proposed optimization procedure is promising.

The scattering of the electromagnetic field by an impedance cylinder immersed halfway between two different half-spaces is considered. One of the half-spaces is composed of a dielectric material, and the other a metamaterial. In addition to the general case, several special cases are also considered. These cases include scattering by a thin wire, the limiting values for the surface impedance on the cylinder (PEC and PMC), and the reverse isovelocity case.

The authors numerically investigated the origin of broadband lasing from multi-stack InAs/InP quantum dash (Qdash) laser. For this a model based on multi-population carrier-photon rate equation is developed which treats each Qdash stacking layer separately. In addition, the coupling between the adjacent stacks is also accounted in the model apart from the inhomogeneous broadening due to dash size or composition fluctuation. Simulation results show that the effect of Qdash inhomogeneity on a single plane (in-plane or localized inhomogeneity) is negligible in broadening the lasing spectra compared to the inhomogeneity across the stacks that are emitting at different wavelength. Our results would help in further optimizing the wafer structure design and improve the lasing bandwidth.

In this paper, we investigate a multiple relay selection scheme for two-way relaying cognitive radio networks where primary users and secondary users operate on the same frequency band. More specifically, cooperative relays using Amplify-and-Forward (AF) protocol are optimally selected to maximize the sum rate of the secondary users without degrading the Quality of Service (QoS) of the primary users by respecting a tolerated interference threshold. A strong optimization tool based on genetic algorithm is employed to solve our formulated optimization problem where discrete relay power levels are considered. Our simulation results show that the practical heuristic approach achieves almost the same performance of the optimal multiple relay selection scheme either with discrete or continuous power distributions.
