In this paper, we study power allocation strategies for a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward relay network employing multiple relays. We consider two optimization problems for the relay network: 1) optimal power allocation to maximize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 2) minimizing the total consumed power while maintaining the end-to-end SNR over a threshold value. We assume that the relays have knowledge of only the channel statistics of all the links. We show that the SNR maximization problem is concave and the power minimization problem is convex. Hence, we solve the problems through convex programming. Numerical results show the benefit of allocating power optimally rather than uniformly.

This paper proposes a reduced-complexity downlink multi-channel assignment scheme when feedback links are capacity-limited. The system model treats the case when multiple access points are allocated to serve scheduled users in over-loaded (i.e. dense) pico/femtocell networks. It assumes that the deployed access points can be shared simultaneously and employ isotropic antenna arrays of arbitrary sizes. Moreover, they transmit their data on a common physical channel and can not coordinate their transmissions. On the other hand, each scheduled user can be served by single transmit channel from each active access point at a time, and it lacks coordination with concurrent active users. The scheme operates according to the occupancy of available transmit channels, wherein extensively occupied access points are avoided adaptively, while reducing the load of processing. The operation is linked to a target performance via controlling the observed aggregate interference from the projected set of serving points. Through the analysis, results for the scheduled user outage performance, and the average number of active access points are presented. Numerical and simulations studies clarify the gains of the proposed scheme for different operating conditions.

In this work, the performance analysis of a dual-hop relay transmission system composed of asymmetric radio-frequency (RF) and unified free-space optical (FSO) links subject to pointing errors is presented. These unified FSO links account for both types of detection techniques (i.e. indirect modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) as well as heterodyne detection). More specifically, we derive new exact closed-form expressions for the cumulative distribution function, probability density function, moment generating function, and moments of the end- to-end signal-to-noise ratio of these systems in terms of the Meijer's G function. We then capitalize on these results to offer new exact closed-form expressions for the outage probability, higher-order amount of fading, average error rate for binary and M-ary modulation schemes, and ergodic capacity, all in terms of Meijer's G functions. All our new analytical results are verified via computer-based Monte-Carlo simulations.

A key task of smart meters is to securely report the power consumption of households and provide dynamic pricing to consumers. While transmission to all meters can be performed via a simple broadcast, several challenges are faced during the reporting process. Firstly, the communication network should be able to handle the large amount of load reports, and secondly, the privacy of the load report should be ensured. In this paper, we propose a novel compressive sensing based network design that 1) reduces the communication network transmission overhead, and 2) ensures the privacy of the load reports. Based on recent findings from [1] and [2], numerical results show that the proposed design significantly reduces the network transmission overhead and utilizes the fading channel to encrypt the load reports, thus making it almost impossible for an eavesdropper to decipher the load reports.

In this work, we present the performance analysis of a dual-branch transmission system composed of a direct radio frequency (RF) link and a dual-hop relay composed of asymmetric RF and free-space optical (FSO) links. The FSO link accounts for pointing errors and both types of detection techniques (i.e. intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) as well as heterodyne detection). The performance is evaluated under the assumption of selection combining (SC) diversity scheme. RF links are modeled by Rayleigh fading distribution whereas the FSO link is modeled by a unified Gamma-Gamma fading distribution. Specifically, we derive new exact closed-form expressions for the cumulative distribution function, probability density function, moment generating function, and moments of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio of such systems in terms of the Meijer's G function. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the dominant protocol used for VoIP signaling. SIP is required to be adapted for use over decentralized environment instead of the overlay infrastructure-based networks. This research proposes a secure cluster-based SIP service over Ad hoc network to protect the adapted SIP service from several types of attacks. It eliminates the shortcomings of centralized approaches such as single point of failure. Additionally., it cuts off the overhead presented by fully distributed approaches. We conducted sets of simulation experiments to evaluate the proposed solution through different metrics. The advantage of using secure solution versus the non-secure solution has been studied. Secure solution overcomes the use of the non-secure one. It maintains higher call signaling success ratio than non-secure by 58% under high black hole attacker ratio. Non-secure solution, under Denial of Service (DoS) attack, suffers overhead that can reach up to 13.5 times the overhead resulted from the use of the secure solution.

In this paper, we propose a spectrum sharing mechanism with a two-phase two-way relaying protocol for an overlay cognitive network. The system comprises two primary users (PUs) and two secondary users (SUs). One of the SUs acts as a relay for the PUs and gains spectrum sharing as long as he respects outage probability constraints of the primary system. Moreover, we consider that the relaying node performs an optimal power allocation scheme that minimizes the outage performance of the secondary receiver. Closed form expressions for the outage probability are derived for the cases of Decode-and-Forward (DF), Amplify-and-Forward (AF), and adaptive relaying. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate and compare the obtained results.

Bit-error rate (BER) performance of subcarrier M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) and M-ary differential PSK (MDPSK) is analyzed for optical wireless communications in Gamma-Gamma turbulence. We study the relation between the exact BER and the approximate BER, which is obtained by dividing the symbol error rate by the number of bits per symbol, for subcarrier MPSK and MDPSK modulations. The asymptotic performance gap between the exact and the approximate BERs is quantified analytically through our asymptotic analyses. The accuracy of the approximate BER of both MPSK and MDPSK depends on the channel conditions. Under weak turbulence conditions, the approximate BER expression can be used to predict the system performance with high accuracy, while under strong turbulence conditions the approximate BER becomes inaccurate and can only serve as a loose lower bound of the exact BER. The asymptotic BER performance loss of MDPSK with respect to MPSK is also quantified analytically.

In this paper, we propose optimal linear detectors for non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward cooperative protocol when considering a single-relay scenario. Two types of detectors are proposed based on the principles of minimum mean square error (MMSE) and minimum bit error rate (MBER). The MMSE detector minimizes the mean square error, while the MBER minimizes the system bit error rate (BER). Both detectors exhibit excellent BER performance with relatively low complexity as compared to the maximal likelihood (ML) detector. The BER performance of both detectors is superior to the channel inversion, the maximal ratio combining, and the biased ML detectors.
