I discuss the coevolution of bio-ontologies and analytical bioinformatics methods in response to the evolving landscape of life sciences. I focus on the role of ontologies, in particular the Gene Ontology, in capturing and describing biological knowledge, and the challenges and developments in ontology-based bioinformatics, particularly in light of new computational methods and machine learning. The main theme is the bidirectional influence between how ontologies and bioinformatics methods evolved together, and how ontologies have shaped advancements in the analysis, representation, and understanding of biological data by providing a unifying layer of knowledge. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Gaussian processes (GPs) are commonly used for geospatial analysis, but they suffer from high computational complexity when dealing with massive data. For instance, the log-likelihood function required in estimating the statistical model parameters for geospatial data is a computationally intensive procedure that involves computing the inverse of a covariance matrix with size $n$ × n, where $n$ represents the number of geographical locations in the simplest case. As a result, in the literature, studies have shifted towards approximation methods to handle larger values of $n$ effectively while maintaining high accuracy. These methods encompass a range of techniques, including low-rank and sparse approximations. Among these techniques, Vecchia approximation is one of the most promising methods to speed up evaluating the log-likelihood function. This study presents a parallel implementation of the Vecchia approximation technique, utilizing batched matrix computations on contemporary GPUs. The proposed implementation relies on batched linear algebra routines to efficiently execute individual conditional distributions in the Vecchia algorithm. We rely on the KBLAS linear algebra library to perform batched linear algebra operations, reducing the time to solution compared to the state-of-the-art parallel implementation of the likelihood estimation operation in the ExaGeoStat software by up to 700X, 833X, 1380X on 32GB GV100, 80GB A100, and 80GB H100 GPUs, respectively, with the largest matrix dimension that can fully fit into the GPU memory in the dense Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) case. We also successfully manage larger problem sizes on a single NVIDIA GPU, accommodating up to 1 million locations with 80GB A100 and H100 GPUs while maintaining the necessary application accuracy. The advent of multi-unmanned aerial vehicle (multi-UAV) networks in mobile edge computing (MEC) introduces dynamic computational topologies where UAVs, acting as mobile edge servers, are tasked with processing data from ground-based user equipment (UE). This paper addresses the dual challenges of optimizing both UAV deployment and task offloading within such networks to minimize communication latency and efficiently utilize UAV resources, which are limited by battery life and processing capabilities. We propose a bi-level optimization framework that simultaneously tackles the placement of UAVs and the distribution of computational tasks among them. At the higher level, UAV deployment is optimized to ensure minimal distance to the UEs, thereby reducing latency and energy consumption during data transmission. At the lower level, task offloading is optimized to balance the computational load across the UAV network, considering each UAV's capacity and battery constraints. We demonstrate through extensive simulations the significant improvements in system efficiency, latency, and resilience. This approach not only enhances the performance of UAV-assisted MEC networks but also provides scalable solutions adaptable to various operational scenarios. © 2025 IEEE.

Linewidth narrowing in self-injection-locked on-chip lasers

In this paper, a method for disturbance estimation for a class of non-homogeneous time fractional advection dispersion equation with general boundary conditions, is proposed. The disturbances are considered to affect the boundary conditions or the measurements or both. The proposed method is based on modulating functions. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the performance of the approach.

Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are gaining higher attention recently due to the increased demand for indoor location aware services. Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising technology to use for IPS. In particular, received signal strength (RSS) based visible light positioning (VLP) systems are gaining high attention due to their low complexity and cost, in addition to higher positioning accuracy compared to their radio frequency (RF) counterparts. One of the main challenges in RSS based VLP systems is encountered when the receiver (the target) is tilted and not placed in parallel with the transmitters (the anchors). RSS based trilateration techniques require a computationally expensive and time-consuming process to solve the nonlinear problem of tilted receivers. Fingerprint based systems generally provide high positioning accuracy with short positioning time, and maybe used to circumvent the need to deal with the high complexity associated with tilted receivers. However, the design of a fingerprinting VLP system for tilted receiver has not been explored yet as far as receivers with a single photodetector (PD) are concerned. In this work, a fingerprint based VLP system for tilted receivers using artificial neural networks (ANN) is proposed, where different types of input features for training the positioning algorithm are studied. We show that using the components of the normal vector to the PD's surface in addition to RSS values provides an excellent positioning accuracy with an average positioning error of 25.41 cm and a remarkably low average positioning time less than $\mathbf{5} \boldsymbol{\mu} \boldsymbol{s}$ . In addition, important research directions for future work are discussed.

Recently,multimodal multiobjective optimization problems(MMOPs)have received increasing *** goal is to find a Pareto front and as many equivalent Pareto optimal solutions as *** some evolutionary algorithms for them have been proposed,they mainly focus on the convergence rate in the decision space while ignoring solutions *** this paper,we propose a new multiobjective fireworks algorithm for them,which is able to balance exploitation and exploration in the decision *** first extend a latest single-objective fireworks algorithm to handle *** we make improvements by incorporating an adaptive strategy and special archive guidance into it,where special archives are established for each firework,and two strategies(i.e.,explosion and random strategies)are adaptively selected to update the positions of sparks generated by fireworks with the guidance of special ***,we compare the proposed algorithm with eight state-of-the-art multimodal multiobjective algorithms on all 22 MMOPs from CEC2019 and several imbalanced distance minimization *** results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to compared algorithms in solving ***,its runtime is less than its peers'.
