Integrating environmental and health information in the authentication and authorization processes is challenging in the Internet of things (IoT) systems using only wireless radio communications. Recent research plans for IoT future networks shed light on the need for developing new authentication techniques suitable for health care and environmental use cases. To this end, we propose a novel molecular keys (MKs)-based authentication system that uses molecules as data carriers while considering the receiver's types, concentration, and arrival time. To facilitate our proposal, we built a MK generator and detector. The system achieved a decoding accuracy of 86% for sending bit sequences within a distance of 1m. The proposed method can also accommodate dynamic authentication and authorization changes across time and places, emerging marketing applications, and evolving human activities.

A new frequency diverse array (FDA) radar system is proposed for range estimation of a target using time-invariant beampattern. To illuminate a desired range, the transmit beampattern is optimized using the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) technique. This allows for a longer dwell period, which improves the accuracy of weak target identification. To lessen noise effects in range estimation, the minimum power distortionless response (MPDR) beamformer is employed. The precision of range estimation is derived using the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Based on simulation data, the FDA design that has been proposed performs better than current approaches as measured by the root-mean-squared error (RMSE). The proposed FDA radar shows superior target localization performance compared to existing techniques, achieving the CRLB at a signal-to-noise (SNR) value of −5 dB.

Underwater acoustic wave propagation time delay and fluctuations are much greater than radio waves. However, many of the protocols used for underwater acoustic networking and communication are designed according to the principles of terrestrial wireless communication networks, failing to give full consideration to utilizing the underwater acoustic propagation and its time delay variation. For this reason, this article proposes an adaptive varying contention window media access control (AVCW-MAC) protocol based on propagation delay. The protocol uses AVCW random backoff mechanism to differently set up the CW of each node based on the different propagation delays from each underwater sensor node to the cluster head node to improve the channel utilization. In addition, to avoid excessive difference in the CW of each node, the backoff factors K1 and K2 are introduced in the AVCW random backoff mechanism to improve the fairness of nodes' accessing the channel. Simulation results show that for the same amount of sensor nodes, the AVCW-MAC protocol has significantly improved network throughput and decreased average end-to-end latency when compared to legacy CW-MAC protocols. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Harnessing the Potential of Optical Communications for the Metaverse

The Metaverse is a digital world that offers an immersive virtual experience. However, the Metaverse applications are bandwidth-hungry and delay-sensitive that require ultrahigh data rates, ultra-low latency, and hyper-intensive computation. To cater for these requirements, optical communication arises as a key pillar in bringing this paradigm into reality. We highlight in this paper the potential of optical communications in the Metaverse. First, we set forth Metaverse requirements in terms of capacity and latency;then, we introduce ultra-high data rates requirements for various Metaverse experiences. Then, we put forward the potential of optical communications to achieve these data rate requirements in backbone, backhaul, fronthaul, and access segments. Both optical fiber and optical wireless communication (OWC) technologies, as well as their current and future expected data rates, are detailed. In addition, we propose a comprehensive set of configurations, connectivity, and equipment necessary for an immersive Metaverse experience. Finally, we identify a set of key enablers and research directions such as analog neuromorphic optical computing, optical intelligent reflective surfaces (IRS), hollow core fiber (HCF), and terahertz (THz). © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

An experiment where a 3D printer attempts to repair itself by printing a sequence of increasing-in-quality parts is presented and analyzed. Perturbations are added to some parts of the mechanical structures in the printer to simulate damaged or worn-out parts. Mathematical modeling and simulations are used to predict the asymptotic behavior of the self-repair process after many repair attempts. We show that—in most cases—the system converges to a non-ideal state and validations are presented. Finally, a controller is designed and added to the system, and its benefits to the self-repair process are studied.

Online stochastic generators using Slepian bases for regional bivariate wind speed ensembles from ERA5

Reanalysis data, such as ERA5, provide a comprehensive and detailed representation of the Earth’s system by assimilating observations into climate models. While crucial for climate research, they pose significant challenges in terms of generation, storage, and management. For 3-hourly bivariate wind speed ensembles from ERA5, which face these challenges, this paper proposes an online stochastic generator (OSG) applicable to any global region, offering fast stochastic approximations while storing only model parameters. A key innovation is the incorporation of the online updating, which allows data to sequentially enter the model in blocks of time and contribute to parameter updates. This approach reduces storage demands during modeling by eliminating the need to store and analyze the entire dataset, and enables near real-time emulations that complement the generation of reanalysis data. The Slepian concentration technique supports the efficiency of the proposed OSG by representing the data in a lower-dimensional space spanned by data-independent Slepian bases optimally concentrated within the specified region. We demonstrate the flexibility and efficiency of the OSG through two case studies requiring long and short blocks, specified for the Arabian-Peninsula region (ARP). For both cases, the OSG performs well across several statistical metrics and is comparable to the SG trained on the full dataset. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper,a deadlock prevention policy for robotic manufacturing cells with uncontrollable and unobservable events is proposed based on a Petri net ***,a Petri net for the deadlock control of such systems is *** admissible markings and first-met inadmissible markings(FIMs)are ***,place invariants are designed via an integer linear program(ILP)to survive all admissible markings and prohibit all FIMs,keeping the underlying system from reaching deadlocks,livelocks,bad markings,and the markings that may evolve into them by firing uncontrollable *** also ensures that the obtained deadlock-free supervisor does not observe any unobservable *** addition,the supervisor is guaranteed to be admissible and structurally minimal in terms of both control places and added *** condition under which the supervisor is maximally permissive in behavior is ***,experimental results with the proposed method and existing ones are given to show its effectiveness.

In light of advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has emerged as a crucial component in developing autonomous vehicles. However, the rapid evolution of this technology has introduced significant security concerns. This paper addresses the growing threat of cyberattacks on autonomous vehicles that utilize wireless communication networks. The proposed model introduces a novel solution to safeguard driver privacy and secure network connections during vehicle operation by employing the driver's biometric information and Hash-Key Derivation Function (HKDF) (HMAC-based Key Derivation Function) to generate a unique session key. This approach fills a critical research gap by enhancing the security of automated vehicle communication systems vulnerable to various cyber threats. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in creating a robust and unpredictable network key, significantly increasing the difficulty for attackers in compromising the system. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes mean field models to maintain an accurate line-of-sight and tracking between transceivers mounted in mobile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) platforms in the presence of underlying mechanical vibration effects. We describe a two-way optical link beam tracking control that coordinates mobile UAVs in a network architecture to provide reliable network structure, distributed connectivity, and communicability, enhancing terrestrial public safety communication systems. We derive the optical transceiver trajectory tracking problem in which each agent dynamic and cost function is coupled with other optical beam transceiver agent states via a mean field term. We propose two optimal mean field beam tracking control frameworks through decentralized and centralized strategies in which the optical transceivers compete to reach a Nash equilibrium and cooperate to attain a social optimum, respectively. The solutions of these strategies are derived from forward-backward ordinary differential equations and rely on the linearity Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Fokker-Planck equations and stochastic maximum principle. Moreover, we numerically compute the solution pair of the resulting joint equations using Newton and fixed point iteration methods to verify the existence and uniqueness of the equilibrium and social optimum.
