Capacitive power transfer has received a lot of attention as one of the new wireless power transfer technologies due to the flexibility of the coupling structure, low standing losses, and low Electromagnetic Interference. However, the ability to deliver power degrades significantly with load variations and coupling misalignment. This degradation represents a serious issue for the emerging technology. In this paper, a switch-controlled capacitor (SCC) and a buck-boost DC-DC converter have been added on the transmitter side and the receiving side of the conventional system, respectively. The SCC provides a mean of compensation for the coupling variations while a variable duty cycle DC-DC converter is employed to mitigate the load variation effect. A 26 W system is modeled and simulated, utilizing actual component models for verification. Compared to a typical system, the proposed system could achieve constant output power against variations of ±75% in the coupling interface value and a wide range of load variations from 5 Ω to 1 kΩ.

In this work, we examine the potential of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to facilitate and enhance uplink (UL) transmissions in grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) networks. The proposed RIS-assisted GF-NOMA approach employs virtual partitioning of RIS, with each partition tailored to optimize channel conditions for individual NOMA user equipment (UE). The resulting channel gain disparity bolsters the NOMA gain and obviates the necessity for UL power control of the grant-based NOMA schemes. Our approach is evaluated under three practical operational regimes: 1) quality-of-service (QoS) sufficient regime, 2) efficient RIS usage regime, and 3) max-min fair regime, all subject to UL-QoS constraints. We derive closed-form solutions to elucidate how optimal RIS partitioning can fulfill UL-QoS requirements across all three operational regimes. Comprehensive simulations are conducted to validate the precision of our analytical findings, demonstrating that the proposed approach substantially improves wireless communication system performance while mitigating signaling overhead and computational complexity.

Monitoring the water quality and controlling the feeding are essential functions in balancing fish productivity and shaping fish’s life history in the fish growth process. Currently, most fish-feeding processes are conducted manually in different phases and are not optimized. The feeding technique influences fish growth through the feed conversion rate. In addition, the high concentration level of ammonia affects the water quality, resulting in fish survival and mass death. Therefore, there is a crucial need to develop control strategies to determine optimal, efficient, and reliable feeding processes and monitor water quality simultaneously. In this paper, we revisit the representative fish growth model describing the total biomass change by incorporating the fish population density and mortality. We specifically focus on relative feeding as a manipulated variable to design traditional and optimal control to track the desired weight reference within the suboptimal temperature and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) profiles under different levels of unionized ammonia (UIA) exposures. Then, we propose an optimal algorithm that optimizes the feeding and water quality of the dynamic fish population growth process. We also show that the model predictive control decreases fish mortality and reduces food consumption in all different cases by an average of 26.9% compared to the bang-bang controller, 22.6% compared to the PID controller.

Regulating the voltage of the common DC bus, also referred to as the “load bus”, in DC microgrids is crucial for ensuring reliability and maintaining the nominal load voltage, which is essential for protecting sensitive loads from voltage variations. Stability and reliability are thereby enhanced, preventing malfunctions and extending the lifespan of sensitive loads (e.g., electronic devices). Voltage drops are caused by resistances of feeders connecting converters to the common DC bus, resulting in a reduced DC bus voltage compared to the nominal/desired value. Existing techniques to restore this voltage in DC microgrids are mainly centralized and rely on secondary control layers. These layers sense the common DC bus voltage, compare it to the nominal value, and utilize a PI controller to send corrections via communication links to each converter. In this paper, a local and straightforward approach to restoring the bus voltage in DC microgrids is presented, ensuring regulation in a decentralized manner. Voltage drops across resistances of feeders are compensated by an additional control loop feedback within each converter, based on the converter output current and feeder resistance. The proposed approach is verified through simulation and hardware-in-the-loop results, eliminating the need for communication links and hence increasing reliability and reducing cybersecurity threats.

This paper investigates the maximization of har-vested data in a laser-powered uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) supporting Internet of Things (IoT) deployment. The system enables battery-free IoT devices to establish communication links with the UAV via bistatic backscattering with the aid of a power beacon source. Upon considering an unspecified flying time, we adopt path discretization and resort to the single-block successive convex approximation (SCA) to solve the data collection maximization problem. In addition to considering the UAV dynamics and power budget, two novel SCA-compatible bounds are introduced for the product of mixed convex/concave positive functions. Finally, the simulations conducted show that the proposed algorithm provides 90% increase in collected data under different operation conditions.

Wasserstein complexity penalization priors: a new class of penalizing complexity priors

Penalizing complexity (PC) priors is a principled framework for designing priors that reduce model complexity. PC priors penalize the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD) between the distributions induced by a "simple" model and that of a more complex model. However, in many common cases, it is impossible to construct a prior in this way because the KLD is infinite. Various approximations are used to mitigate this problem, but the resulting priors then fail to follow the designed principles. We propose a new class of priors, the Wasserstein complexity penalization (WCP) priors, by replacing KLD with the Wasserstein distance in the PC prior framework. These priors avoid the infinite model distance issues and can be derived by following the principles exactly, making them more interpretable. Furthermore, principles and recipes to construct joint WCP priors for multiple parameters analytically and numerically are proposed and we show that they can be easily obtained, either numerically or analytically, for a general class of models. Runtime Assurance (RTA) is becoming a trend in the aerospace and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) industries due to its benefits, such as ensuring the safety of a safety-critical system, e.g., Urban Air Mobility, without a formal verification of the primary system controller. The principle of RTA revolves around the notion of maintaining a backup controller and executing it whenever the primary controller appears to harm the system. Additionally, a modern avionics architecture (distributed), consisting of nodes (sensors, actuators, computing units, etc.) capable of exchanging information via a reliable, standard communication network, can also benefit from RTA. Hence, integration of the RTA framework into an avionics architecture can allow for a reduced degree of verification for these algorithm and, in turn, promote autonomy levels of the avionics systems.;This paper presents a formal RTA definition and framework for the distributed avionics architecture to obtain the benefits of resource sharing and improved system autonomy. We also demonstrate a real-time execution of RTA implementation on a multirotor vehicle equipped with distributed avionics architecture in the event of failure. © 2022 IEEE.

This work investigates simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS) in multiple-access (MA) bidirectional network architecture. The proposed optimization framework incorporates two practical operational protocols of STAR-RIS to optimize the channel gains for users and obviate the necessity for uplink power control while adhering to specified quality of service (QoS) constraints. The proposed approach undergoes thorough evaluation under key optimization problems: QoS feasible region, and energy efficiency. The closed-form solutions are validated through simulations, showcasing the notable advantages that STAR-RIS can provide to the considered multiple-access networks. Simulation findings revealed that in the context of the proposed system model, the mode switching approach can attain a superior QoS threshold rate compared to the energy splitting mode. The proposed framework has demonstrated its ability to meet bidirectional communication needs with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

Constructing the architecture of a neural network is a challenging pursuit for the machine learning community, and the dilemma of whether to go deeper or wider remains a persistent question. This paper explores a comparison between deeper neural networks (DeNNs) with a flexible number of layers and wider neural networks (WeNNs) with limited hidden layers, focusing on their optimal generalization error in Sobolev losses. Analytical investigations reveal that the architecture of a neural network can be significantly influenced by various factors, including the number of sample points, parameters within the neural networks, and the regularity of the loss function. Specifically, a higher number of parameters tends to favor WeNNs, while an increased number of sample points and greater regularity in the loss function lean towards the adoption of DeNNs. We ultimately apply this theory to address partial differential equations using deep Ritz and physics-informed neural network (PINN) methods, guiding the design of neural networks.

The rapid development of the smart grid has intensified research efforts towards automating power transmission system inspections using unmanned intelligent vehicles (UIVs). A major challenge hindering their large-scale deployment is the short operational endurance of these vehicles. This paper addresses this limitation by proposing the use of an energy transmitter (ET) and a reconfigurable intelligent surface for wirelessly charging the vehicles through radio frequency (RF) signals. Additionally, we tackle the nonlinearity of RF-to-direct current (DC) conversion, which shows efficiency saturation at high power levels, by introducing a novel power-splitting (PS) energy harvesting (EH) receiver architecture in the inspection vehicles. The inspection tasks are divided into multiple time slots, and a power transfer efficiency (PTE) maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the beamforming design at both the transmitter and the RIS, as well as the transmit power allocation and receiving power splitter settings for each time slot. This approach aims to meet the energy requirements of the unmanned inspection vehicles while adhering to the total available power constraint at the ET. To solve the non-convex PTE maximization problem, we propose an efficient solution utilizing alternating optimization, the Dinkelbach’s method, and successive convex approximation, considering the unique properties of channel structure and finite phase resolution. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed system and design significantly extend the lifespan of inspection vehicles and achieve high energy efficiency in a low-complexity manner. © 2017 IEEE.
