Wetting challenges in treatment of raw textile wastewater by membrane distillation: A case study

This case study investigated the effectiveness of Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) in treating real textile wastewater. Textile wastewater treatment presents a critical challenge in the field of environmental sustainability, requiring innovative approaches for its treatment to mitigate adverse impacts on ecosystems. DCMD emerges as a promising solution for the treatment and reuse of textile wastewater. However, the intricate composition of real textile wastewater represents a major bottleneck for the process, as the effectiveness of DCMD is influenced by numerous factors, complicating its application. In this study, experiments with an untreated sample demonstrate the detrimental impact of suspended solids on membrane performance. The application of simple pretreatment steps prior to DCMD, involving sedimentation and filtration, substantially enhanced the quality of the permeate, resulting in 100 % color removal, 99.99 % turbidity removal, and considerable removal rates for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC). Nevertheless, wetting remained a significant issue, as evidenced by the persistence of commonly used volatile organic contaminants and surfactants in the textile industry detected within the permeate. The findings in this case study reinforce that DCMD holds promise for textile wastewater treatment but emphasize the necessity of pretreatment and wetting mitigation strategies to fully unlock its potential. This research offers crucial insights for future MD applications in addressing the complexities of textile wastewater treatment. © 2025 The Authors

The notion of a smart city is a modern concept characterized by the widespread integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) across various facets of urban life, including healthcare, traffic management, agriculture, and more. This establishes real-time communication and data exchange between all users, servers and devices through the Internet. As we begin to discuss communication between parties, one must also recognize the imperative need for this exchange to be secure and private, as such exchanges are extremely vulnerable to attacks such as man-in-the-middle and replay attacks and even situations like compromising of anonymity during exchanges. This paper focuses on finding an innovative solution to the same challenge. It proposes a mechanism to establish secure communication between the smart IoT devices and the connected cloud servers through a secure mutual authentication and key establishment process with a short name “SLA-SCA”. The security analysis of the proposed SLA-SCA is done, which proves its resilience against the various potential attacks of such a communication. The proposed SLA-SCA outperformed the other existing schemes regarding important security and functionality features.

The pursuit of novel concepts and design schemes for metasurfaces to develop Terahertz (THz) polarization-related devices with exceptional performance is an ongoing and highly demanding project. Here, A new all-metal stereo U-shaped meta-atom based design scheme for manipulating terahertz polarization is proposed. The design functions as an efficient and broadband THz waveplate with tailorable birefringence by controlling sunken depth. The polarization conversion ratio (PCR) is $\gt90$% with 69% relative bandwidth and 85° angle tolerance. The proposed meta-grating based on Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase method is also demonstrated, enriching design degrees of freedom for metasurfaces and offering potential for various functional devices.

In this paper, we investigate the existence of a finite number of vortex patches for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equations with α ∈ [1,2), focusing on configurations that may rotate uniformly, translate, or remain stationary. Using a desingularization technique, we reformulate the problem to resolve singularities arising in the point vortex limit. Association rules are popular form for knowledge discovery domain. They are used for finding interesting relationships and patterns hidden in large data sets and in the area of associative classification, where usually rules with one item in the right-hand side are considered. There are many different approaches and algorithms for mining association rules. One of the most popular group are methods which are based on mining frequent itemsets, usually applied for data in transaction format. Such data can be transformed to binary information system which corresponds to matrix data format. Technological development means that we are dealing with an increasing amount of data that can be heterogeneous, taking into account their format and location. In this paper, we assume that dispersed data is represented by a finite set S of information systems with equal sets of attributes. We discuss one of the possible ways to the study association rules common to all information systems from the set S : building a joint information system for which the set of true association rules that are realizable for a given row r and have given attribute f on the right-hand side coincides with the set of association rules that are true for all information systems from S , are realizable for the row r , and have the attribute f on the right-hand side. We show how to build a joint information system in a polynomial time. When we build such an information system, we can apply to it various association rule learning algorithms.

We investigate the numerical artifact known as a carbuncle, in the solution of the shallow water equations. We propose a new Riemann solver that is based on a local measure of the entropy residual and aims to avoid carbuncles while maintaining high accuracy. We propose a new challenging test problem for shallow water codes, consisting of a steady circular hydraulic jump that can be physically unstable. We show that numerical methods are prone to either suppress the instability completely or form carbuncles. We test existing cures for the carbuncle. In our experiments, only the proposed method is able to avoid unphysical carbuncles without suppressing the physical instability. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We present a general framework that couples the PaRSEC runtime system and the HiCMA numerical library to solve challenging 3D data-sparse problems. Though formally dense, many matrix operators possess a rank structured property that can be exploited during the most time-consuming computational phase, i.e., the matrix factorization. In particular, this work highlights how a software bundle powered by a task-based programming model can address the heterogeneous workloads engendered by compressing the dense operator. Using Tile Low-Rank (TLR) approximation, our approach consists in capturing the most significant information in each tile of the matrix using a threshold which satisfies the application's accuracy requirements. Matrix operations are performed on the compressed data layout, reducing memory footprint and algorithmic complexity. Our proposed software solution accommodates a range of traditional data structures of linear algebra, i.e., from dense and data-sparse to sparse, within a single matrix operation. Separation of concerns is at the heart: hardware-agnostic implementation, asynchronous execution with a dynamic runtime system, and high performance numerical kernels, to prepare scientific applications to embrace exascale opportunities. This ambition necessitates extensions to PaRSEC that incorporate information related to data structure and rank distribution into the runtime decision-making. We introduce two runtime optimizations to address the challenges encountered when confronted with a large rank disparity: (1) a trimming procedure performed at runtime to cut away data dependencies from the directed acyclic graph discovered to be no longer required after compression and (2) a rank-aware diamond-shaped data distribution to mitigate the load imbalance overheads, reduce data movement, and conserve memory foot-print. We design and develop a new high performance implementation of a fast direct LU-based solver using low-rank approximations on massively parallel systems. The LU factorization is the most time-consuming step in solving systems of linear equations in the context of analyzing acoustic scattering from large 3D objects. The matrix equation is obtained by discretizing the boundary integral of the exterior Helmholtz problem using a higher-order Nyström scheme. The main idea is to exploit the inherent data sparsity of the matrix operator by performing local tile-centric approximations while still capturing the most significant information. In particular, the proposed LU-based solver leverages the Tile Low-Rank (TLR) data compression format as implemented in the Hierarchical Computations on Manycore Architectures (HiCMA) library to decrease the complexity of "classical" dense direct solvers from cubic to quadratic order. We taskify the underlying boundary integral kernels to expose fine-grained computations. We then employ the dynamic runtime system StarPU to orchestrate the scheduling of computational tasks on shared and distributed-memory systems. The resulting asynchronous execution permits to compensate for the load imbalance due to the heterogeneous ranks, while mitigating the overhead of data motion. We assess the robustness of our TLR LU-based solver and study the qualitative impact when using different numerical accuracies. The new TLR LU factorization outperforms the state-of-the-art dense factorizations by up to an order of magnitude on various parallel systems, for analysis of scattering from large-scale 3D synthetic and real geometries. © 2020, The Author(s).

This study showcases a method for achieving high-performance yellow and red micro-LEDs through precise control of indium content within quantum wells. By employing a hybrid quantum well structure with our six core technologies, we can accomplish outstanding external quantum efficiency (EQE) and robust stripe bandwidth. The resulting 30 μm × 8 micro-LED arrays exhibit maximum EQE values of 11.56% and 5.47% for yellow and red variants, respectively. Notably, the yellow micro-LED arrays achieve data rates exceeding 1 Gbit/s for non-return-to-zero on–off keying (NRZ-OOK) format and 1.5 Gbit/s for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) format. These findings underscore the significant potential of long-wavelength InGaN-based micro-LEDs, positioning them as highly promising candidates for both full-color microdisplays and visible light communication applications. © The Author(s) 2024.

In this paper, we propose the concept of accelerated convergence that has originally been developed to speed up the convergence of numerical methods for extremum seeking (ES) loops. We demonstrate how the dynamics of ES loops may be analyzed to extract structural information about the generated output of the loop. This information is then used to distil the limit of the loop without having to wait for the system to converge to it.
