The integration of digital technologies in substations offers numerous advantages, including real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and enhanced operational efficiency. However, increased automation also introduces cybersecurity vulnerabilities, particularly in protocols like IEC 61850, notably in the Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event (GOOSE) message. Although IEC 62351-6:2020 suggests security measures employing Hash-based Message Authentication Code (HMAC) and Galois Message Authentication Code (GMAC) for lower computational overhead, their reliance on symmetric key-based encryption poses challenges in key distribution. Moreover, with the advent of quantum computing, it becomes imperative for security schemes to be quantum attack resistant. This paper proposes usage of quantum-secure FALCON-based digital signature scheme (FDSS) to secure GOOSE messages. FALCON offers robust security against quantum attacks while maintaining efficient performance. The performance evaluation of FDSS for GOOSE messages is presented, demonstrating its viability for securing time-sensitive GOOSE messages.

Anomalous hall and skyrmion topological hall resistivity in magnetic heterostructures for the neuromorphic computing applications

Topologically protected spin textures, such as magnetic skyrmions, have shown the potential for high-density data storage and energy-efficient computing applications owing to their particle-like behavior, small size, and low driving current requirements. Evaluating the writing and reading of the skyrmion’s magnetic and electrical characteristics is crucial to implementing these devices. In this paper, we present the magnetic heterostructure Hall bar device and study the anomalous Hall and topological Hall signals in these devices. Using different measurement techniques, we investigate the magnetic and electrical characteristics of the magnetic structure. We measure the skyrmion topological resistivity and the magnetic field at different temperatures. MFM imaging and micromagnetic simulations further explain the anomalous Hall and topological Hall resistivity characteristics at various magnetic fields and temperatures. The study is extended to propose a skyrmion-based synaptic device showing spin-orbit torque-controlled plasticity. The resistance states are read using the anomalous Hall measurement technique. The device integration in a neuromorphic circuit is simulated in a 3-layer feedforward artificial neural network ANN. Based on the proposed synapses, the neural network is trained and tested on the MNIST data set, where a recognition accuracy performance of about 90% is achieved. Considering the nanosecond reading/writing time scale and a good system level performance, these devices exhibit a substantial prospect for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing.

Physical Layer Security for LEO Satellite Communication Systems with Friendly Jamming Satellite

In this paper, we consider a low earth orbit satellite communication system with a legitimate user and an eavesdropper and investigate its secrecy performance. Considering the beam coverage of the satellites, we propose a system where a friendly jammer satellite transmits artificial noise signals only to eavesdroppers. We obtain the cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios taking into account the Nakagami-m fading and the positions of ground users and satellites. The CDFs are used to derive the analytical forms of the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity, secrecy capacity outage probability, and average secrecy capacity. In addition, for tractability and insight, asymptotic forms are also investigated at a high-power regime. Finally, we present the numerical results to validate the obtained expressions and show the diversity order of the secrecy capacity. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Analysis of large scale aerial terrestrial networks with mmWave backhauling

Service providers are considering the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance wireless connectivity of cellular networks. To provide connectivity, UAVs have to be backhauled through terrestrial base stations (BSs) to the core network. In particular, we consider millimeter-wave (mmWave) backhauling in the downlink of a hybrid aerial-terrestrial network, where the backhaul links are subject to beamforming misalignment errors. In the proposed model, the user equipment (UE) can connect to either a ground BS or a UAV, where we differentiate between two transmission schemes according to the backhaul status. In one scheme, the UEs are served by the UAVs regardless of whether the backhaul links are good or not. In the other scheme, the UAVs are aware of the backhaul links status, and hence, only the subset of successfully backhauled UAVs can serve the UEs. Using stochastic geometry, the performance of the proposed model is assessed in terms of coverage probability and validated against Monte-Carlo simulations. Several insights are provided for determining some system parameters including the UAVs altitude and required number and the beamforming misalignment error of the backhaul link. The obtained results highlight the impact of the UAVs backhaul link on the UE experience. © 2021, CC BY.

In Internet of Vehicles (IoV), the high mobility of vehicles aggravates the uneven and dynamic spatial-temporal distribution of wireless traffic, leading to low resource utilization. To improve the wireless resource utilization efficiency of IoV, this paper investigates predictive resource allocation strategy by exploiting vehicle mobility information. To characterize vehicle's speed distribution, we adopt a kernel density estimation method to analyze the real trajectory dataset. Based on this analysis, we propose an iterative predictive resource allocation scheme considering different mobility patterns and channel distribution information. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme converges well and can obtain considerable performance gains over non-predictive resource allocation schemes. © 2020 IEEE.

Optical flow, inspired by the mechanisms of biological visual systems, calculates spatial motion vectors within visual scenes that are necessary for enabling robotics to excel in complex and dynamic working environments. However, current optical flow algorithms, despite human-competitive task performance on benchmark datasets, remain constrained by unacceptable time delays (~0.6 seconds per inference, 4X human processing speed) in practical deployment. Here, we introduce a neuromorphic optical flow approach that addresses delay bottlenecks by encoding temporal information directly in a synaptic transistor array to assist spatial motion analysis. Compared to conventional spatial-only optical flow methods, our spatiotemporal neuromorphic optical flow offers the spatial-temporal consistency of motion information, rapidly identifying regions of interest in as little as 1–2 ms using the temporal motion cues derived from the embedded temporal information in the two-dimensional floating gate synaptic transistors. Thus, the visual input can be selectively filtered to achieve faster velocity calculations and various task execution. At the hardware level, due to the atomically sharp interfaces between distinct functional layers in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, the synaptic transistor offers high-frequency response (~100 μs), robust non-volatility (>104 s), and excellent endurance (>8,000 cycles), enabling robust visual processing. In software benchmarks, our system outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms with a 400% speedup, frequently surpassing human-level performance while maintaining or enhancing accuracy by utilizing the temporal priors provided by the embedded temporal information. © 2024, CC BY.

High-dimensional linear discriminant analysis classifier for spiked covariance model

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a popular classifier that is built on the assumption of common population covariance matrix across classes. The performance of LDA depends heavily on the quality of estimating the mean vectors and the population covariance matrix. This issue becomes more challenging in high-dimensional settings where the number of features is of the same order as the number of training samples. Several techniques for estimating the covariance matrix can be found in the literature. One of the most popular approaches are estimators based on using a regularized sample covariance matrix, giving the name regularized LDA (R-LDA) to the corresponding classifier. These estimators are known to be more resilient to the sample noise than the traditional sample covariance matrix estimator. However, the main challenge of the regularization approach is the choice of the optimal regularization parameter, as an arbitrary choice could lead to severe degradation of the classifier performance. In this work, we propose an improved LDA classifier based on the assumption that the covariance matrix follows a spiked covariance model. The main principle of our proposed technique is the design of a parametrized inverse covariance matrix estimator, the parameters of which are shown to be easily optimized. Numerical simulations, using both real and synthetic data, show that the proposed classifier yields better classification performance than the classical R-LDA while requiring lower computational complexity.

Due to its low latency and high data rates support, mmWave communication has been an important player for vehicular communication. However, this carries some disadvantages such as lower transmission distances and inability to transmit through obstacles. This work presents a Contextual Multi-Armed Bandit Algorithm based beam selection to improve connection stability in next generation communications for vehicular networks. The algorithm, through machine learning (ML), learns about the mobility contexts of the vehicles (location and route) and helps the base station make decisions on which of its beam sectors will provide connection to a vehicle. In addition, the proposed algorithm also smartly extends, via relay vehicles, beam coverage to outage vehicles which are either in NLOS condition due to blockages or not served any available beam. Through a set of experiments on the city map, the effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated, and the best possible solution is presented.

The applications of terahertz(THz)technology can be greatly extended using non-diffractive beams with unique field distributions and non-diffiactive transmission ***,we design and experimentally demonstrate a set of dual non-diffractive THz beam generators based on an all-dielectric *** kinds of non-diffractive beams with dramatically opposite focusing properties,Bessel beam and abruptly autofocus-ing(AAF)beam,are considered.A Bessel beam with longdistance non-diffractive characteristics and an AAF beam with low energy during transmission and abruptly increased energy near the focus are generated for x-and^-polarized incident waves,*** two kinds of beams are characterized and the results agree well with *** addition,we show numerically that these two kinds of beams can also carry orbital angular momentum by further imposing proper angular phases in the *** believe that these metasurface-based beam generators have great potential use in THz imaging,communications,non-destructive evaluation,and many other fields.

Boundary stabilization of a reaction-diffusion system weakly coupled at the boundary.

This study analyses the boundary stabilization of a system of two parabolic linear PDEs weakly coupled at the boundary. This model is motivated by heat transfer in a membrane distillation based desalination modeled by a two-dimensional advection diffusion equations coupled at the boundary. Based on some physical assumptions, the 2D model can be formulated as a 1D reaction-diffusion system. Two cases were studied: full and under actuated scenarios. In the full actuated case, a backstepping approach is used to map the plant to an exponentially stable target system. The well-posedness of the kernel equations is proved. Moreover, the actuation of only one of the parabolic equations has been considered. The standard backstepping transformations is again used to transform the initial plant to a desired target system where Lyapunov analysis is adequately used. Finally, a numerical example showing the performance of the proposed control design is presented.
