Integrating multiple functionalities into a single device is a striking field in metasurfaces. Here, we experimentally demonstrate several efficiently multifunctional dielectric metasurfaces in the terahertz regime using a spin-decoupled phase control method allowed by simultaneous control of dynamic phase and geometric phase. The designing strategy shows an impressive robustness and a great flexibility in designing metasurface-based multifunctional devices, and opens new avenues toward the applications in beam steering and polarization multiplexing.

Contribution: A learning management system (LMS) incorporated with an advanced educational data mining module is proposed, as a means to mine efficiently from student performance records to provide valuable insights for educators in helping plan effective learning pedagogies, improve curriculum design, and guarantee quality of teaching. Background: An LMS streamlines the management of the teaching process in a centralized place, recording, tracking, and reporting the delivery of educational courses and student performance. Educational knowledge discovery from such an elearning system plays a crucial role in rule regulation, policy establishment, and system development. However, existing LMSs do not have embedded mining modules to directly extract knowledge. As educational modes become more complex, educational data mining efficiency from those heterogeneous student learning behaviours is gradually degraded. Intended outcomes: The design and application of the LMS enable educators to learn from past student performance experiences, empowering them to guide and intervene with students in time, and eventually improve their academic success. Application design: This study proposes an effective LMS which processes the stored data through an advanced educational data mining module. The mining module utilizes probability-based frequent pattern mining for generating candidate itemsets and updating LMS databases in each iteration for complexity reduction. In addition, the conditional probability increment ratio (CPIR) is deployed as an exceptionality measure to mine effective common and exception rules simultaneously. The iteratively generated rules can reveal academic performance patterns so that have merits in learning personal goal achievement. Findings: Through two illustrative case studies, experimental results demonstrate increased mining efficiency of the proposed mining module without information loss compared to classic educational mining algorithms. Currently, environmental protection and intelligence system are topics of interest in smart homes and intelligent buildings. This work represents an environmental prediction study of the closed room which installed a split-type air-conditioning system and a newly designed sensor hub using a feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network-based prediction for human thermal comfort and indirectly concerned to the growth or existence of diseases, contagious diseases and allergies. The RPROP algorithm was utilized to train the closed room environmental parameters that get from sensor hub especial relative humidity in the ANN model and validate the model by using cohen's kappa and ROC curve to represents the degree of accuracy and reliability. The result obtained from the ANN trained data agreed closely with those obtained from a sensor hub with the high perfect agreement. The benefit of the ANN-based strategy in this study could be utilized for the design of a sensor hub that can realize the adaptive adjustment of environmental parameters through the air conditioning system. © 2020 IEEE.

Massive machine-Type communications (mMTC) are expected to be one of the most primary scenarios in the next-generation wireless communications and provide massive connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT). To meet the demanding technical requirements for mMTC, random access scheme with efficient joint activity and data detection (JADD) is vital. In this paper, we propose a compressive sensing (CS)-based grant-free random access scheme for mMTC, where JADD is formulated as a multiple measurement vectors (MMV) CS problem. By leveraging the prior knowledge of the discrete constellation symbols, we develop an orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP)-MMV algorithm for JADD, where the structured sparsity is fully exploited for enhanced performance. Moreover, expectation maximization (EM) algorithm is employed to learn the unknown sparsity ratio of the a priori distribution and the noise variance. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves superior performance over other state-of-The-Art CS schemes. © 2020 IEEE.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composed of bimetallic nickel-palladium (NiPd) nanoparticles encapsulated in graphitic carbon shells (NdPd@CNT) are prepared by the chemical vapour deposition method using waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic carbon sources and NiPd-decorated carbon sheets (NiPd@C) catalyst. The characterization results reveal that the face-centered cubic crystalline (fcc)-structured NiPd bimetallic alloy nanoparticles are encased by thin carbon nanotubes. The bimetallic synergism of NiPd nanoparticles actuates the outer CNT layers and accelerates the electrical conductivity, stimulating the electrochemical activity toward an effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). By virtue of the collective individualities of highly conductive aligned carbon walls and bimetallic active sites, the NiPd@CNT-equipped HER delivers a minimum overpotential of 87 mV and a Tafel slope value of 95 mV dec−1. The existing intact contact between NiPd and CNT facilitates continuous electron and ion transportation and firm stability toward long-term hydrogen production in HER. Notably, the NiPd@CNT reported here produces excellent electrochemical activity with minimal charge transference resistance, substantiating the efficacy of NiPd@CNT for futuristic green hydrogen production. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

An explicit time marching scheme is developed to solve a system of time domain surface integral equations enforced on homogeneous penetrable objects for scalar potential and its normal derivative. This system is cast in the form of an ordinary differential equation (ODE) and unknowns are expanded using high-order nodal functions. Inserting these expansions into the ODE and applying point-testing (Nystrom method) yield a system in time-dependent coefficients of the unknown expansions. This system is integrated in time using a predictor-corrector algorithm to yield the expansion coefficients. The resulting explicit time marching scheme uses the same time step size as its implicit counterpart without sacrificing the stability of the solution and is almost three times faster for low frequency excitations.

In this work, we address the optimization of vertical backhaul framework where multiple aerial base station (ABS) are deployed to conFigure the intermediate backhaul links for terrestrial base stations (TBS) in wireless networks. Here, we focus on maximizing the downlink network throughput in mixed RF/FSO backhaul networks by optimizing resource allocation and placement. Specifically, the ABS-TBS association, transmit power, and positions of ABSs are alternately and iteratively optimized. To solve the corresponding mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm by applying the block coordinate descent method and successive convex optimization techniques. Although we obtain suboptimal solutions due to the non-convexity of the problems, simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme demonstrates the significant network throughput gain compared with the conventional scheme.

In the relentless pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, this study pioneers an innovative approach to integrating thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and photovoltaic (PV) modules within hybrid systems. Uniquely, it employs neural networks for an exhaustive analysis of a plethora of parameters, including a diverse spectrum of semiconductor materials, cooling film coefficients, TE leg dimensions, ambient temperature, wind speed, and PV emissivity. Leveraging a rich dataset, the neural network is meticulously trained, revealing intricate interdependencies among parameters and their consequential impact on power generation and the efficiencies of TEG, PV, and integrated PV-TE systems. Notably, the hybrid system witnesses a striking 23.1% augmentation in power output, escalating from 0.26 W to 0.32 W, and a 20% ascent in efficiency, from 14.68% to 17.62%. This groundbreaking research illuminates the transformative potential of integrating TEGs and PV modules and the paramountcy of multifaceted parameter optimization. Moreover, it exemplifies the deployment of machine learning as a powerful tool for enhancing hybrid energy systems. This study, thus, stands as a beacon, heralding a new chapter in sustainable energy research and propelling further innovations in hybrid system design and optimization.
