Exceptional points(EPs)have been extensively explored in mechanical,acoustic,plasmonic,and photonic ***,little is known about the role of EPs in tailoring the dynamic tunability of optical devices.A specific type of EPs known as chiral EPs has recently attracted much attention for controlling the flow of light and for building sensors with better responsivity.A recently demonstrated route to chiral EPs via lithographically defined symmetric Mie scatterers on the rim of resonators has not only provided the much-needed mechanical stability for studying chiral EPs,but also helped reduce losses originating from nanofabrication imperfections,facilitating the in-situ study of chiral EPs and their contribution to the dynamics and tunability of ***,we use asymmetric Mie scatterers to break the rotational symmetry of a microresonator,to demonstrate deterministic thermal tuning across a chiral EP,and to demonstrate EP-mediated chiral optical nonlinear response and efficient electro-optic *** results indicate asymmetric electro-optic modulation with up to 17 dB contrast at GHz and CMOS-compatible voltage *** wafer-scale nano-manufacturing of chiral electro-optic modulators and the chiral EP-tailored tunning may facilitate new micro-resonator functionalities in quantum information processing,electromagnetic wave control,and optical interconnects.

The cyber-physical production system (CPPS) was developed for the interconnection between operational technology (OT) and information and communication technology (ICT) among the machines and decentralized production control. However, OT and ICT are now getting more complex in the modern industry. To enhance industrial management and production process, the CPPS based on the 5G architecture under production environments can provide a more comprehensive solution in the context of Industry 4.0. For this purpose, a 5G CPPS model to improve the interoperability of CPPS in ICT and OT is proposed to build a virtualized Industry 4.0 asset management shell system. First, real-time task artifacts and 5G communication modules are bound in a certain form of virtualization. Second, task artifacts are released to the production line in a real-time scheduling. Third, an order is placed on a production line and split into multiple tasks for production process. Single-machine single-workpiece and multi-machine and multi-workpiece processing cases are used for testing in the production line. Experimental results show that the proposed 5G CPPS can efficiently achieve multi-machine work piece processing. © 2022, The Author(s).

This article proposes an intelligent platform for monitoring students' steps on their way to school until they leave the school to their homes. This platform can identify students and notify those responsible and competent authorities in various situations of school life, such as: entering and leaving the school bus, entering and leaving school, entering the school cafeteria, etc. The first application aims to control access to the school bus through facial recognition. In the tests carried out, the recognition system achieved excellent results in all metrics. © 2023 IEEE.

In our study, we explore methods for detecting unwanted content lurking in visual datasets. We provide a theoretical analysis demonstrating that a model capable of successfully partitioning visual data can be obtained using only textual data. Based on the analysis, we propose Hassle-Free Textual Training (HFTT), a streamlined method capable of acquiring detectors for unwanted visual content, using only synthetic textual data in conjunction with pre-trained vision-language models. HFTT features an innovative objective function that significantly reduces the necessity for human involvement in data annotation. Furthermore, HFTT employs a clever textual data synthesis method, effectively emulating the integration of unknown visual data distribution into the training process at no extra cost. The unique characteristics of HFTT extend its utility beyond traditional out-of-distribution detection, making it applicable to tasks that address more abstract concepts. Voice synthesizers still present several challenges in the speech of mathematical content, as spoken mathematics has quite peculiar rules. In the synthesized speech, pauses help blind and visually impaired students identify the limits of mathematical operators and subexpressions. However, most studies on pauses define them uniformly or use simple punctuation marks to force the synthesizer to introduce pauses in certain parts of the expression. Speech is a dynamic process and pauses in expressions also need to be dynamic to make the synthetic speech of expressions more natural, as this can help in memorizing this type of content. This work proposed a dynamic model of pauses for mathematical expressions. Collected math expressions spoken by teachers were used to create the model. These expressions were useful for identifying patterns and creating a linear regression model. Blind and visually impaired students evaluated the model. Some improvements were observed when we compared the synthesized mathematical expressions with the model and Audiomath, the parameter tool used in this study. © 2022 ACM.

Adversarial Environment Design via Regret-Guided Diffusion Models

Training agents that are robust to environmental changes remains a significant challenge in deep reinforcement learning (RL). Unsupervised environment design (UED) has recently emerged to address this issue by generating a set of training environments tailored to the agent’s capabilities. While prior works demonstrate that UED has the potential to learn a robust policy, their performance is constrained by the capabilities of the environment generation. To this end, we propose a novel UED algorithm, adversarial environment design via regret-guided diffusion models (ADD). The proposed method guides the diffusion-based environment generator with the regret of the agent to produce environments that the agent finds challenging but conducive to further improvement. By exploiting the representation power of diffusion models, ADD can directly generate adversarial environments while maintaining the diversity of training environments, enabling the agent to effectively learn a robust policy. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully generates an instructive curriculum of environments, outperforming UED baselines in zero-shot generalization across novel, out-of-distribution environments. Conveyor belts are commonly used in the mining industry for efficient material transport. However, they are prone to failures such as idler anomalies, belt tears, and misalignment. Current monitoring systems only evaluate the conveyor or idle belt's condition at the installation point. This study proposes a method to detect faults in conveyor belts, specifically idler anomalies and belt deviation, using two IMUs installed at the lateral extremities of the belt to evaluate its health along its route. In a reduced-scale conveyor belt, we conducted experiments by collecting gyroscopes and accelerometer data in various scenarios, including normal conditions and anomaly situations. We modified the idlers' physical structure or changed the belt tracks to create these scenarios. We used similarity analysis techniques to compare the data collected and performed statistical hypothesis analysis to observe the influence of the anomaly scenarios on the gyroscope and accelerometer data. We used Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) for gyroscope data to compare ground truth with anomaly scenarios. For the acceleration data, we performed vibration analysis by converting the time domain data to the frequency using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and evaluating the difference in spectral density between the reference and anomaly data. Statistical hypothesis analysis revealed that anomaly scenar-ios influenced the gyroscope x-axis and z-axis more. According to the spectral density analysis of the accelerometer, it was revealed that belt misalignment on the y-axis may be detected. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we study the transmission strategy of a ground-based beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS), a.k.a RIS 2.0, in a network where multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) simultaneously transmit signals to the respective groups of users. It is assumed that each group is assigned subcarriers orthogonal to those assigned to other groups and rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) is adopted within each group. A corresponding mixed integer nonlinear program.ing problem (MINLP) is formulated, which aims to jointly optimize 1) allocation of BD-RIS elements to groups, 2) BD-RIS phase rotations, 3) rate allocation in RSMA, and 4) precoders. To solve the problem, we propose using generalized benders decomposition (GBD) augmented with a manifold-based algorithm. GBD splits the MINLP problem into two sub-problems, namely the primal and the relaxed master problem, which are solved alternately and iteratively. In the primal problem, we apply block coordinate descent (BCD) to manage the coupling of variables effectively. Moreover, we recognize the manifold structure in the phase rotation constraint of BD-RIS, enabling the Riemannian conjugate gradient (RCG). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in maximizing spectral efficiency.

Toward Robust Hyper-Detailed Image Captioning: A Multiagent Approach and Dual Evaluation Metrics for Factuality and Coverage

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) excel at generating highly detailed captions but often produce hallucinations. Our analysis reveals that existing hallucination detection methods struggle with detailed captions. We attribute this to the increasing reliance of MLLMs on their generated text, rather than the input image, as the sequence length grows. To address this issue, we propose a multiagent approach that leverages LLM-MLLM collaboration to correct given captions. Additionally, we introduce an evaluation framework and a benchmark dataset to facilitate the systematic analysis of detailed captions. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed evaluation method better aligns with human judgments of factuality than existing metrics and that existing approaches to improve the MLLM factuality may fall short in hyper-detailed image captioning tasks. In contrast, our proposed method significantly enhances the factual accuracy of captions, even improving those generated by GPT-4V. Finally, we highlight a limitation of VQA-centric benchmarking by demonstrating that an MLLM’s performance on VQA benchmarks may not correlate with its ability to generate detailed image captions. © 2024, CC BY.

The absolute depth values of surrounding environments provide crucial cues for various assistive technologies, such as localization, navigation, and 3D structure estimation. We propose that accurate depth estimated from panoramic images can serve as a powerful and light-weight input for a wide range of downstream tasks requiring 3D information. While panoramic images can easily capture the surrounding context from commodity devices, the estimated depth shares the limitations of conventional image-based depth estimation; the performance deteriorates under large domain shifts and the absolute values are still ambiguous to infer from 2D observations. By taking advantage of the holistic view, we mitigate such effects in a self-supervised way and fine-tune the network with geometric consistency during the test phase. Specifically, we construct a 3D point cloud from the current depth prediction and project the point cloud at various viewpoints or apply stretches on the current input image to generate synthetic panoramas. Then we minimize the discrepancy of the 3D structure estimated from synthetic images without collecting additional data. We empirically evaluate our method in robot navigation and map-free localization where our method shows large performance enhancements. Our calibration method can therefore widen the applicability under various external conditions, serving as a key component for practical panorama-based machine vision systems.
