Efforts to map atomic-scale chemistry at low doses with minimal noise using electron microscopes are fundamentally limited by inelastic ***,fused multi-modal electron microscopy offers high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)recovery of material chemistry at nano-and atomic-resolution by coupling correlated information encoded within both elastic scattering(high-angle annular dark-field(HAADF))and inelastic spectroscopic signals(electron energy loss(EELS)or energy-dispersive x-ray(EDX)).By linking these simultaneously acquired signals,or modalities,the chemical distribution within nanomaterials can be imaged at significantly lower doses with existing detector *** many cases,the dose requirements can be reduced by over one order of *** high SNR recovery of chemistry is tested against simulated and experimental atomic resolution data of heterogeneous nanomaterials.

Voice synthesizers still present several challenges in the speech of mathematical content, as spoken mathematics has quite peculiar rules. In the synthesized speech, pauses help blind and visually impaired students identify the limits of mathematical operators and subexpressions. However, most studies on pauses define them uniformly or use simple punctuation marks to force the synthesizer to introduce pauses in certain parts of the expression. Speech is a dynamic process and pauses in expressions also need to be dynamic to make the synthetic speech of expressions more natural, as this can help in memorizing this type of content. This work proposed a dynamic model of pauses for mathematical expressions. Collected math expressions spoken by teachers were used to create the model. These expressions were useful for identifying patterns and creating a linear regression model. Blind and visually impaired students evaluated the model. Some improvements were observed when we compared the synthesized mathematical expressions with the model and Audiomath, the parameter tool used in this study.

Differentiable architecture search (DARTS) has become the popular method of neural architecture search (NAS) due to its adaptability and low computational cost. However, following the publication of DARTS, it has been found that DARTS often yields a suboptimal neural architecture because architecture parameters do not accurately represent operation strengths. Through extensive theoretical analysis and empirical observations, we reveal that this issue occurs as a result of the existence of unnormalized operations. Based on our finding, we propose a novel variance-stationary differentiable architecture search (VS-DARTS), which consists of node normalization, local adaptive learning rate, and pβ-continuous relaxation. Comprehensively, VS-DARTS makes the architecture parameters a more reliable metric for deriving a desirable architecture without increasing the search cost. In addition to the theoretical motivation behind all components of VS-DARTS, we provide strong experimental results to demonstrate that they synergize to significantly improve the search performance. The architecture searched by VS-DARTS achieves the test error of 2.50% on CIFAR-10 and 24.7% on ImageNet. © 2021. The copyright of this document resides with its authors.

This paper proposes a reconfiguration for a single-phase, double conversion uninterruptible power supply (UPS). With the addition of two static switches to the original circuit, the UPS mitigates the ripple in the current, through battery discharge performed by two legs. Other than these switches, the circuit topology is preserved. The preliminary results show a satisfactory level of ripples for the inductor current and suitable power quality for the output voltage.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are crucial for microgrids, enhancing dynamic performance and mitigating uncertainties inherent to isolated environments characterized by intermittent power generation. When microgrid is supplied by wind power in connection with BESS, the bidirectional DC-DC converter associated with BESS assumes a critical responsibility—ensuring the control of a wind power supplied DC-link. This permits the Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) to synthesize consistent voltages for the connected AC load. However, challenges emerge, particularly in arduous stress on switches of the bidirectional converter attributed to elevated current ripple. This stress does not only prejudice the overall system’s functioning but can also potentially leading it to shutdown in case of switch failure. Traditionally, the conventional buck-boost converter topology has been the go-to choice for this application, nevertheless, exploring novel converter topologies, such as interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter (IBDC) has garnered attention, promising enhanced performance. This paper’s goal is to conduct a comparative analysis of the operation of these converters in an islanded microgrid supplied by a single Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG) small-scale wind turbine with a BESS system. Load variation with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) operation of the PMSG is performed during MATLAB/Simulink environment simulations. The results suggest significant advantages for the interleaved three-phase converter, such as reduced battery charging current ripple, switch disturbance, and voltage ripple in the DC-link.

In this paper we consider the filtering of partially observed multi-dimensional diffusion processes that are observed regularly at discrete times. This is a challenging problem which requires the use of advanced numerical schemes based upon time-discretization of the diffusion process and then the application of particle filters. Perhaps the state-of-the-art method for moderate dimensional problems is the multilevel particle filter of [12]. This is a method that combines multilevel Monte Carlo and particle filters. The approach in that article is based intrinsically upon an Euler discretization method. We develop a new particle filter based upon the antithetic truncated Milstein scheme of [10]. We show that for a class of diffusion problems, for ϵ > 0 given, that the cost to produce a mean square error (MSE) in estimation of the filter, of O(ϵ2) is O(ϵ−2 log(ϵ)2). In the case of multidimensional diffusions with non-constant diffusion coefficient, the method of [12] has a cost of O(ϵ−2.5) to achieve the same MSE. Current methods for quantifying osteoarthritis severity have limited resolution and accessibility. Patient-recorded outcome measures such as the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) capture symptom severity, but are subjectively reported and have little correlation with quantifiable metrics of disease such as Kellgren-Lawrence x-ray grade or MRI findings. Knee acoustic emissions (KAEs) offer a convenient, noninvasive option for quantifying joint health. Here, we use machine learning and wearable design to create an interpretable two-stage algorithm for combining KAEs and KOOS scores into an objective, more accessible method of quantifying disease severity. Our algorithm successfully discriminated between early and late-stage osteoarthritis (balanced accuracy = 85%, ROC-AUC = 0.88). The addition of KAEs improved classification of osteoarthritis severity over the use of KAEs (balanced accuracy = 53%, ROC-AUC = 0.786) or KOOS scores alone (balanced accuracy = 63%, ROC-AUC = 0.593). The findings suggest that KAEs combined with patient-recorded metrics can be used to make a more objective and accessible metric for digitally monitoring knee joint health.

The WHO predicts that by 2030 road accidents will be the 5th leading cause of death. Globally, road accidents account for 1.25 million casualties each year, and road defects cause 34% of these casualties. The road survey process in many countries have several challenges, one of which is detection using cameras that do not have a recognition system. In this study, a model with YOLOS architecture based on Vision Transformer trained on the RDD2022 dataset successfully recognizes road damage well, as indicated by the number of objects detected, bounding box on accurate objects, and the ability to recognize objects with inconsistent shadow and light inference. This research uses assessment parameters such as Average Precision (AP) and Average Recall (AR) to determine the overall performance of the model. The model achieves the highest AP value at Intersection of Union (IoU) 0.5, 0.75, and 0.5-0.95, worth 62.1%, 37.1%, and 36.2% respectively, and the highest AR value in Large, Medium, and Small Areas, worth 42.1%, 60.3%, and 75.4% respectively. Searching reads from unknown origins in a reference database and finding evolutionarily similar genomes is central to many applications. Quantifying the similarity by estimating the distance between each read and matching references could further help downstream analyses such as taxonomic characterization or even placing the read on a reference phylogeny. Such distances can be computed using alignment. Since alignment becomes impractical for ultra-large reference databases, many use k-mer-based tools for downstream tasks, but these methods do not compute distances. We introduce krepp to compute the distance between a read and a genome using a maximum likelihood framework built around k-mers. We further introduce algorithms to place reads on a reference tree. Empirical evaluations show that krepp accurately estimates distances, scales well with large databases, and can place short reads coming from any part of the genome on a reference phylogeny. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Evaluating the Systematic Reasoning Abilities of Large Language Models through Graph Coloring

Contemporary large language models are powerful problem-solving tools, but they exhibit weaknesses in their reasoning abilities which ongoing research seeks to mitigate. We investigate graph coloring as a means of evaluating an LLM’s capacities for systematic step-by-step reasoning and possibility space exploration, as well as effects of semantic problem framing. We test Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Llama 3.1 405B, Gemini 1.5 Pro, GPT-4o, o1-mini, and DeepSeek-R1 on a dataset of k-coloring problems with 2 ≤ k ≤ 4 and vertex count 4 ≤ n ≤ 8, using partial algorithmic solvers to further categorize problems by difficulty. In addition to substantial but varying framing effects, we find that all models except o1-mini and R1 exhibit > 60% error rates on difficult problem types in all frames (> 15% for o1-mini and > 10% for R1), and no model achieves perfect accuracy even in the simple domain of 2-coloring 4-vertex graphs. Our results highlight both the considerable recent progress in LLM systematic reasoning and the limits of its reliability, especially in relation to increasing computational costs. We expect that more complex graph coloring problems, and procedural generation of arbitrary-complexity reasoning problems more broadly, offer further untapped potential for LLM benchmarking. © 2025, CC BY.
