This paper presents a novel testbed designed for 5th-Generation (5G) positioning using Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRPs). The testbed integrates multiple units: an Operation Unit for test management, a User Unit equipped with an Ettus E312 USRP, and a Station Unit featuring an Ettus N310 USRP equipped with a three-element Uniform Linear Array for Angle of Arrival estimation. Alongside ultra wide-band ranging, the testbed estimates the user’s position relative to the base station. Signal processing algorithms are executed in a dedicated processing unit. Key challenges addressed include phase misalignment between RX channel pairs due to different Local Oscillators in the Ettus N310, necessitating real-time calibration for precise signal alignment. High sampling rates (up to 61.44 MSps) result in large IQ sample files, managed efficiently using a snapshot technique to optimize storage without compromising testbed positioning capabilities. The testbed synchronizes angular measurements with ranging estimates allowing consistent performance evaluation for real-life cases of dynamic users (e.g. pedestrian). This paper considers the problem of controlling a team of camera-equipped robots to ensure a mobile human target is observed by at least one robot at all times. We focus on determining team trajectories over a fixed time horizon such that the human target is in at least one robot's field of view even while the line of sight to the target can be obstructed by obstacles. Our approach to solving this problem lies in using a particle-based Belief Propagation method to estimate the most likely poses for each robot over time such that the visual tracking requirement is satisfied. Our approach is validated in simulation studies and an experimental trial where a human target must be tracked by a pair of miniature autonomous robot blimps.

This research explores a new finite element model for the free vibration analysis of bi-directional functionally graded (BDFG) beams. The model is based on an efficient higher-order shear deformation beam theory that incorporates a trigonometric warping function for both transverse shear deformation and stress to guarantee traction-free boundary conditions without the necessity of shear correction factors. The proposed two-node beam element has three degrees of freedom per node, and the inter-element continuity is retained using both C1 and C0 continuities for kinematics variables. In addition, the mechanical properties of the (BDFG) beam vary gradually and smoothly in both the in-plane and out-of-plane beam’s directions according to an exponential power-law distribution. The highly elevated performance of the developed model is shown by comparing it to conceptual frameworks and solution procedures. Detailed numerical investigations are also conducted to examine the impact of boundary conditions, the bi-directional gradient indices, and the slenderness ratio on the free vibration response of BDFG beams. The suggested finite element beam model is an excellent potential tool for the design and the mechanical behavior estimation of BDFG structures. © 2024 Techno-Press, Ltd.

A plasmonic tracker had been developed for detecting a plasmonic energy at Total Internal Reflectance angle. It is crucial to determine thin film thicknesses, resonance angle and refractive index of a dielectric material. However, a low cost and flexible plasmonic tracker could offers a precise control for accurate measurement system. The main objective is to develop manual, automated and smart control of the plasmonic tracker at high resolution via a PC based system. The plasmonic tracker uses two 1.8° bipolar stepper motor as a prism and silicon photodiode stages. Both of the stepper motors were operated in microstepping that generate 3200 steps at 0.1125° pulse per step. A stable microstepping operation was observed at distance, period, phase angle, torque, RPM and power respectively at 1250 mm/ sec, 90 μS, 3.4°, 0.22 Nm, 200 RPM and 4.64 W. A plasmonic curve and resonance angle were plotted and displayed from a customized software interface which provides high sensitivity, throughput, performance and efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

Novel polynomial Abet data augmentation algorithm with GRU paradigm for nuclear power prediction

In current study innovative approach is presented to improve the accuracy and efficiency of machine learning models on the dataset for each of the 31 US states, solely comprising a single power output column in Terra watt-hours (TWh) spanning from January 2013 to November 2020 by exploiting the knacks of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), hybrid GRU-LSTM, Polynomial Feature Transform (PFT) and Polynomial Abet (PA) data augmentation with GRU for efficacious prediction. Achieving sufficient accuracy, a small univariate dataset of 95 rows was augmented through the PFT method, resulting in a significant reduction in prediction errors. Encouraged by this improvement, a novel algorithm PA data augmentation with GRU is introduced for further enhancing the accuracy, correlation, and computational efficiency of the prediction model. This research not only demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed PA data augmentation method but also highlights the benefit of using 31 individual univariate datasets for each state, allowing comprehensive testing and validation of the novel algorithm, providing compelling evidence of its efficacy in nuclear power prediction. The results from the proposed algorithms are evaluated using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Relative Root Mean Square Error (RRMSE). A quantitative overview of PA and PFT data augmentation techniques’ comparison show the result in terms of accuracy (PA's 0.464% RRMSE versus PFT's 1.088 % RRMSE), correlation (PA's −0.5877 versus PFT's 0.4892), and computational efficiency (PA's 14.02 % less computational time then PFT) for the nuclear power prediction model. The research framework introduced in this study, with its focus on utilizing state-specific data for nuclear energy prediction, holds significant implications for governmental decision-making policies. We develop a comprehensive model for the effective two-photon density matrix produced by a parametric source of entangled photon pairs under a variety of detector configurations commonly seen in a laboratory setting: two and four photon number-resolving (PNR) and threshold detectors. We derive the probability of obtaining a single coincidence assuming Poisson-distributed photon pairs, non-unit detection efficiency, and dark counts;obtain the effective density matrix;and use this quantity to compute the fidelity of the generated quantum state. The 4 PNR case admits an analytic result valid for any combination of parameters, while all other cases leverage low-efficiency approximations to arrive at closed-form expressions. Interestingly, our model reveals appreciable fidelity improvements from four detectors as opposed to two yet minimal advantages for PNR over threshold detectors in the regimes explored. Overall, our work provides a valuable tool for the quantitative design of two-photon experiments under realistic nonidealities. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We present a novel deep neural network (DNN) architecture for compressing an image when a correlated image is available as side information only at the decoder, a special case of the well-known distributed source coding (DSC) problem in information theory. In particular, we consider a pair of stereo images, which generally have high correlation with each other due to overlapping fields of view, and assume that one image of the pair is to be compressed and transmitted, while the other image is available only at the decoder. In the proposed architecture, the encoder maps the input image to a latent space, quantizes the latent representation, and compresses it using entropy coding. The decoder is trained to extract the common information between the input image and the correlated image, using only the latter. The received latent representation and the locally generated common information are passed through a decoder network to obtain an enhanced reconstruction of the input image. The common information provides a succinct representation of the relevant information at the receiver. We train and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on the KITTI and Cityscape datasets of stereo image pairs. Our results show that the proposed architecture is capable of exploiting the decoder-only side information, and outperforms previous work on stereo image compression with decoder side information.

Data-Driven Power Flow Estimation for MVDC Distribution Systems Based on Physics-Embedded FCN

Maintaining high prediction accuracy with varying grid topologies poses a significant challenge to adopting neural network (NN)-based approaches for power flow (PF) estimation in medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) distribution systems. This paper proposes a physics-embedded fully convolutional network (PEFCN) to improve the accuracy. Physics-embedded techniques are incorporated in the proposed PEFCN through 1) architecture reconstruction, and 2) loss function reformulation. Architecture is reconstructed by input channel conversion calculation in a new physics operation layer. This process offers physical connections among the three input matrix channels (voltage, current, and line conductance). Three new physics loss terms are included in the loss function to restrict the outliers violating the limits of converter power ratings and terminal MVDC voltages. The two operations enable the FCN to achieve improved prediction accuracy and strong generalization capabilities. Five MVDC distribution systems, characterized by different dc voltage levels and topology configurations, serve to validate the superiority of the proposed PEFCN over other NNs in the PF estimation for scenarios involving both fixed and varying system structures. Moreover, a modified IEEE 69-bus distribution system is further used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed PEFCN for larger systems. © 2010-2012 IEEE.
